Most Disappointing 2014 - Destiny Vs. AC Unity and Halo MCC vs Driveclub

For me it's Destiny, the game isn't broken with technical issues like some of these other games, but the fundamental game design of Destiny is what's broken. You go through the same environments ad naseum dictated by a non existent story, then what's your reward after you finish the "story"? You get to go through the same exact environments again ad naseum to upgrade your faction rank to get items to get you into the best part of the game, the raid. It seems like there's huge swaths of this game are missing. How could bungie take that long to make this game and this is the game design? The fundementals of moving and shooting, art and sound are absolutely top notch. I can't praise them enough, but those core strengths are bolted onto a repetitively designed game loop. Where are the big epic moments we expect from a bungie game? They are completely absent in this, as bungie seemingly forgot what they do best and decided to just ape design from MMOs instead. I expected much more from Bungie given the time and budget they had. It is the most disappointing game, for me, of this year or any year.

  • Love Destiny.
  • Not surprised Unity was a let down.
  • Haven't played MCC, but I am bit suprised that one has so many issues.
  • Bought Driveclub at launch and was shocked at how bad they messed it up. Almost unheard of how long the online stuff was down.

My vote goes to Driveclub.

I would say Destiny even though I still enjoy playing it weekly

I don't consider ACU a disappointment (my the best AC)

Never played MCC or Driveclub but I can understand the disappointment gamers have with both of them.

Destiny is easily the most disappointing for me.

I don't hate it or anything, but since buying it at launch I'm still only at level 9. Enjoyed it enough, but it didn't get its hooks in me.

Destiny in terms of the game itself.

In terms of technical issues, it's VERY close between MCC and Driveclub. While MCC has more aspects to it broken, Driveclub is a FAR simpler package, has already been delayed a year and over a month later still doesn't work 100%. So probably Driveclub.

Destiny takes the prize, without a doubt.

If MCC isn't perfect after today's patch, then it wins. Although, I still am waiting for PS+ DC, so there is that.

Let me tell you a story leading to my decision:

The undeniable kings of gaming were finally developing a new franchise. For months, I had devoted my time to reading about this game, watching trailers and gameplay videos repeatedly, hyping myself to the edges of sanity; doctors might even refer to such levels of hype as a "health risk". I bought a PS4 with only this game in mind. Nearly a year's worth of allowances dedicated to the purchase but I was confident in the decision. The week before release, I stopped eating and could barely sleep. Excitement was all that was fueling me and it was enough.

Then the big day came. Midnight. As it was downloading, I literally threw up from excitement. It seemed as if my entire life had built up to this moment and I could not believe it was really happening. So, I played. For hours, I sat in front of the TV. Hours. But reality started to edge in. It started to become clear that this game was a real shit show. I tried to deny it and tell myself that I was having fun but after a while, I just put the controller down and stared at the PS4 like it had betrayed me. I took several deep breaths, trying to stifle the tears that were welling up. My heart was racing and the deep hunger from days of not eating began to set in. I was weak, possibly dying. I stared at the character I had created in this game. A hatred started to burn as the sun rose.

I went into the kitchen to get some food. My mom was making breakfast. "How was your little game, honey," she asked. I couldn't hold it in any longer. The hope in her voice was too much. For the first time in days, I started to cry. Tears flowed down my face. "IT'S A SHIT SHOW!" I shrieked. My dad glanced at me over his newspaper. "I'd say you're in for some bigger disappointments later on in life but you're fucking 30, so who knows anymore?" "IT'S NOT FAIR," I screamed through tears as I grabbed a stack of raw pop tarts and ran to my room, slamming the door. I felt like I could hear my dad's sigh from the kitchen. I pop tarted my way into a 17 hour nap.

Having bought the game digitally, I actually considered selling my PS4 in an attempt to get rid of the nightmare, but I knew that it would always be on my account no matter what. So, it sits there. That "game". Haunting me. Reminding me of my failures in life.

So, to answer your question, probably Destiny.

Yeah, gotta be Destiny. I still have some fun playing with friends but looking at it objectively, the game is terrible. Same environments over and over again. Boring ass mission design that is literally just killing waves of enemies disguised as something like "hacking door 1 of 3". Disabling matchmaking for straightforward end game content like dailies, weeklies or even nightfall pretty much kills the game for anyone who doesn't sit around on message boards looking for groups. The items are completely uninteresting. The PvP is boring as hell.

I think I'm just pissed because I see genius in Destiny and it's an extremely solid foundation. I feel like there's a lot of good game design and production that's been thrown away by being placed into a mediocre game.

AC:Unity is exactly what I expect from Ubisoft, so I'm not surprised. Didn't buy it. Had no expectations in the first place.

DriveClub I was never that hyped for, I just wanted the PS+ edition. Sad that I still haven't received the free game I was promised, but it's not like I'm really hurting. I'd like to play it someday.

Halo:MCC is the one that hurts the most because it is something I already know and love. However because it is supposed to be fixed soon, I will heal. I hope. Don't let me down, Frankie!

Destiny is the biggest disappointment, though. The game isn't broken, a patch won't fix it like one might fix DC or MCC. The new IP from the creators of Halo has no story, repetitive gameplay, and little motivation to care about any of it at all. The greatest potential of the bunch with the greatest waste of it. The gameplay is often really good, it just isn't enough to keep me invested.

My only hope for Destiny is that a sequel could take the base universe that they have created (which is good but incomplete) and turn it into something I give a shit about with an actual engaging story like Halo had. Then again, at this point I don't want to spend any more money on anything Destiny so it would take a lot of convincing.

DESTINY
we were promised so much and we got so fucking little,

This is a much better and shorter way of saying the same thing I tried to say.

Destiny, a game that had an Alpha and a Beta, working Online, very few bugs, is considered a bigger disappointment than Driveclub and Unity.

For me, it is easily Destiny.

The issues with Unity, MCC, and Driveclub are mostly bugs, performance and missing functionality. All of these are indicative of releasing unpolished. This is less the developer's fault and more on the publisher for rushing a product to market before it is ready.

Destiny, on the other hand, is just a poorly designed game. While the combat is fun and obviously built on Halo, the supporting systems for items, loot, rep grinds, lack of social features entirely, repetitious content, RNG are all atrociously bad. It's clearly indicative of a team who was really good at making a particular game (FPS) and has no clue how to translate that into the (MMO-FPS hybrid) game they actually created. Hopefully they learn some lessons for the sequels/expansions, but judging by their sales and player numbers they probably think they've done a good job - and they haven't.

From that list I'd have to say destiny. While Driveclub and the MCC have had a fair share of problems, they should theoretically be fixed with patches. Destiny was disappointing on a fundamental gameplay level to me, and I don't think that could be fixed by any amount of patches or dlc that they throw at the game.

Hate on Destiny is too much and unrealistic.

For me ACU is much more boring and repititive. Kill that guy/steal that chest and run away. I never like Assassin creed game. I bought it because of multiplayer mode but I still do not like it.

I've played 200+ hours of Destiny so that's not the most disappointing for me. 2014 as a whole was a disappointing year for games. Driveclub has to be the biggest one.

I have no opinions on any of the games with the exception being the master chief collection. So I guess that would be the biggest disappointment for me since I was most excited about it. Not really fussed about the current state of the game, however, as it's a given fact that 343 will do everything in their power to fix all the problems and deliver on their original promises.

Destiny, without a doubt. I'm still pissed I paid full price for that dog shit.

MCC was my biggest disappointment, because I was so hyped for it.

Destiny works and works well. That alone puts it above the other 3 games mentioned in the title. Sorry if it doesn't appeal to you, but people fucking love this game just the way it's designed (despite recognizing the bad to non-existant narrative). Bungie is supporting it with regular updates, many of which have already been implemented. I'm having a blast in Iron Banner, the changes they made to its progression system, along with voice chat. It's a much improved experience and that changed in about one month's time. People need to move on from hating this game because it's unjustified.

Destiny, without a doubt. I'm still pissed I paid for price for that dog shit.
Dog shit. SMH

this negativity about almost every single "AAA" game is terrible. maybe people shouldnt hype like crazy for month, then they wouldnt be so dissapointed.
every single game... its not 60fps, is too short/long, only 900p, story sucks. nagnagnag.

i played destiny, driveclub and right now playing unity. all great games. stop complaining! go play and have fun.

I played Destiny and thought that it was pretty good, but Unity is just a mess. I never played a game with such horrible framerate and insane technical glitches. I still beat it because of my compulsion to finish most games that I play, but the state in which that game was released is unacceptable. After playing Unity GTA V felt like 60fps game.

I had my fun with Destiny. Its a decent game, but its fallen so damn far only because of how high it set its own sights. As a limited game that you can have fun with and then put aside, its fine. As some kind of shooter hybrid MMO with events and something new every day its an abysmal failure in design pretty much across the board.

MCC is broken in about a thousand different ways, but you can still have fun with the campaigns. Still, 343 took on one hell of a crazy ambitious project and shipped a completely flubbed and undercooked implementation of that vision. They patch it today though, so there's a chance that the major fixes could be in soon.

DriveClub has unreliable online but its still one of the best racers I've played in years. When the PS+ version eventually hits people can see that for themselves. I've got no time for concepts like 'losing face' when it comes to launches, so continuing DriveClub launch failures have no more power to them for me being a first party exclusive. Its just another undercooked game that needs patching.

And AC:Unity has technical issues and some of the most underhanded bullshottery, faked walkthroughs and a deceptive release day embargo. So much so that I'm skipping it altogether.

So yeah, for my money and time AC: Unity wins the raspberry here.

For whatever reason, I kept thinking if I was the only one who dislikes Destiny, glad its not the case, I hate Destiny now, I got it on launch, but I have been contemplating to trade in the game. I have probably played it for 20 hrs plus, but its just disappointing, I actually re-did a mission and never once anything told me, I was re-doing it. lol

I think Driveclub has been interesting, its broken technically, but frankly the game is not bad, seeing your friends time on leader board and chasing the ghost and beating it is one of the most enjoyable thing I have done this year in games. I want to give it some grace time and see how it is by July. I got GT6 last year and had lots of fun, I didn't play it since Feburary, till a couple days ago, I put the Disc in again to try to play it with the T300RS, it looks so bland compared to Driveclub graphically I couldn't play it for more then an hour.

DESTINY
we were promised so much and we got so fucking little,

Yep. This.

Unity was (or is) a technical mess but it's a great game underneath, imo. Destiny is just a completely lacking experience. Watch Dogs was even more fulfilling and more worth the price (sold both Destiny and WD, for the record).

Driveclub was a good game, but imo lacked content and had hiccups. But I'm not a big racer fan anyway, so my expectations were low from the get-go. No disappointment there besides the online, really.

So Destiny hands-down.

In return Unity on PC is the prettiest game ever. If you can handle 4k dowmsampling :-P
But honestly, it's the Benchmark.

For that alone, 10 patches later and with all DLC, I'll get it in a Steam sale. More than the other games will get from me which is 0.

Assassin's Creed Unity was not that surprising coming from that publisher.

Master Chief Collection has a lot of issues as well.

But Destiny is rotten to its core compared to the MCC; the other two games suffer from technical issues but this one has dozens of bigger problems than that. Ironically, I think Destiny had the least technical issues of all of them.
What are the "dozenns" of bigger issues? I'm still playing it every weekend and enjoying myself

I've played Driveclub and I watched a friend play Unity. I don't know what people were expecting with Destiny, but I expected a game that my friends and I could play every night for an hour and we always felt like we were making progress and having a good time. And I got that game.

I don't know anyone who is having a good time playing with friends on Driveclub or Unity.
So did you base your buying decisions on reviews or not?

Plenty of people are quite happy with both Driveclub and AC Unity.

Take a look at this article and it's easy to see why people are disappointed with Destiny. A game being broken and potentially fixed later is different than being flat-out lied to by the developers and the advertising about what you're paying for. Functional or not, Destiny isn't what people were sold.

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2013-08-23-bungie-destiny-can-surpass-halo-sit-alongside-star-wars

And that's why a technically functional game is more disappointing than buggy/broken software.
It also sold more than any of those other games.

I still can't believe people can play such a monotonous game. I played it and kept playing it asking myself why, As soon as I was smart enough to sell it. I haven't missed it since.

Anyone who has ever played a jrpg and most rpgs/mmos in general shouldn't have a problem with Destiny, which is a lot of people. I mean how many games are up to 10 OTs? I have at any given time more than 20 people on my friends list playing it. Clearly there are more people who enjoy it than there are people who hate it. Sure there are issues with it as with every game but it is well worth $60.

well I consider core mechanics and design of a game to be more important than performance and server issues. Destiny is just a bore to play with nothing to do. The other games actually have fun gameplay

I must be about the only person that's loving unity. Playing it on Xbox one. Maybe a few frame rate issues but nothing compared to what I'm reading about and I'm about 8 hours in. The micro transactions are kinda crappy but I haven't once felt like I needed them.

AC:Unity is in my top 5 this year and my Top 3 AC games, the bugs are disappointing but the game is great, Destiny was a big let down but I kinda expected it from my experience with the developers, I thought they become better with the Halo franchise (afterall there has to be a reason people like Halo) but nah.

Why does everyone keep saying this game?

It was pretty darn good in many ways.

Not perfect, but a ton of fun for me anyway.

I wouldn't say it was a great game or anything, but Watch Dogs was a perfectly decent game. Nothing that should be winning GOTY awards, but also nothing that should be considered especially bad. That said, if people were hugely hyped for it, then I can certainly understand disappointment. For me, it pretty much met my expectations, so I wasn't dissatisfied with it.

Just depends on your expectations. A lot of people thought Watch Dogs was the coming of real next gen.

I was pretty disappointed in Driveclub but its working much better and we've gotten some good updates with more content. Once they add in weather, I'll be more than happy to jump back in.

Cant stand Destiny - over-hyped and a waste of my money. Traded in after level 20 achieved.

even with its broken online mode Driveclub has had me hooked.
