Starcraft 2 player disqualified from tournament because of rape tweet

I dunno man I have heard gamers say im about to rape this dude or these these guys or this guy for years while gaming competitive online and there has never been no huge uproar. However if you are participating in a event you should be a little more careful on what you are saying.

I think it's this, in a nutshell.

Honestly, I do think this guy got what he deserved (actually, he probably should lose his place on his team as well), and that this has hopefully sent the right message to everyone involved in professional e-sports. This is the sort of shit that will get you fired from pretty much any job these days, and for good reason. He should have just begged off Twitter during the tournament, if not forever - Twitter is a curse, and no professional should ever use it. Maxim726X said it best earlier in the thread:

'I know I write shit on twitter that I regret'...

Then don't write shit on twitter. All it's good for is getting in trouble, I'm sure the world can do without knowing what you had for lunch.

All it's good for is saying some stupid ass shit that gets you in trouble. Just... Don't use it.
On Twitter, you own your words...forever. I know that the same could be said of forum posts and blogs too, but the difference is that on Twitter, you're much more likely to just blurt out any stupid shit that's on your mind without thinking about the ramifications first, like this guy did. A hundred and forty words of doom, the ultimate self-destruct switch for careers.

Nonetheless, people do get too sensitive about these things. There was recently a minor scandal in the UK about a Labour Shadow Cabinet minister who sent a picture of a small terraced house in Rotherham adorned with English St. George's Cross flags with a small white van parked outside, with a caption stating the place where the picture was taken and nothing more. Now, that doesn't sound so bad, does it? Wrong-o.

This was during a hard-fought local election campaign, and the minister who tweeted that pic was forced to resign because her own party's advisors thought that that was supposed to be a sneering insult directed at the typical working class "white van man" that have recently been voting for rival anti-European party UKIP in increasing numbers due to tabloid scaremongering over immigration.

The assumed implication was that the picture illustrated the sort of uneducated, bigoted morons who tend to vote for crazy far-right scum like UKIP and the US Republican Party (which isn't a massive leap of logic to take, quite frankly), and the fraught Labour leadership panicked and called for her head. Later, it turned out that the implication was all in Red Ed's head, and she didn't mean anything by the tweet at all. The red-top papers and TV news channels had a much-deserved go at everyone involved in the fiasco, and UKIP won the seat as expected (though that's a different thing).

So, the poor woman lost her job over nothing, the Labour Party humiliated themselves for no good reason, UKIP got a minor pre-vote boost (and another MP in the House Of Commons), and all over someone being over-sensitive about a tweet. Food for thought.

But, as the wise man said, context is king. The guy in the OP got off easy, but don't judge anyone who posts stupid shit on Twitter too harshly. Just remember - you're nobody's moral authority but your own, and anyway, it could be you in the firing line next.

Unfortunately true.

If the community itself is toxic, banning everyone just results in lost profits and lost community members.

The community needs to be changed, and fracturing it completely won't do that. They'll just move on to somewhere else where the toxic behavior is allowed.

It isn't even a general "community" issue though, it is more broad than that. The community angle is the aspect that enters their realm and is what gets moderated as a result. Trying to peg this on just the community is putting the cart before the horse, since there will always be assholes somewhere perpetuating such actions. There wouldn't be language to describe such things if those types of people never existed.

Edit:brainfart horses and such...

Amen brother. This is a great post.

That Labour Tweet fiasco was appalling.

Given world-wide rape stats, it's a "joke" I'd rather not make and is absolutely traumatizing for the victim and an issue that should be taken seriously (for both genders who experience it). If these jokes are made, much like I'm sure racial or gender ones are, I think it would be better when it's between best friends or whatever else and nowhere near a public sphere.

I just find it and the situation in bad taste.

Dirty sexy jokes are okay and are usually playful, fun, silly, or gross.
But something about forcing yourself on someone? ...yikes.

I have already stated my ignorance on starcraft, but on her blog it said she's a world champion. Can you offer some more insights as for why she has a tittle but apparently plays on a lower level?

Well basically, in starcraft there are leagues in which you play from bronze to master in between there is (silver, gold, platinum, diamond), in each league there is a certain ranking, and then the top 200 in every region gets to grand master. She plays at low/mid master level, and the disparity in skills between low Master and low Gran Master is the same as between bronze and high diamond (more or less, it is just to give a scale).

As an example, I am a regular but not hardcore player (play like 10 games per week since its release) and I have been a couple of time low Master myself and now I am more a high diamond player. And I would consider myself a very bad player compared to Gran Master gamers.

"Kas has apparently apologized already and admitted that he sometimes writes stupid stuff on twitter and hates himself for it."

^^^ This implies that he recognizes he's got a problem, but does nothing to correct himself or change his behavior.

Punishment fits the crime imo.

I remember when I would read the starcraft subreddit, and seeing Destiny getting in huge arguments with people who called him racist and homophobic because he would call people nigger and faggot (among other things). And getting really upset with people calling him out, because those are just words and he didn't really hate gays or blacks or asians in his heart.

If you want to communicate in a certain way, fine, but you can't then get upset at people then treating you in the way you choose to represent yourself. Yes, they are just words, but words are communication and in particular on the internet they are what make up who you are. And it is up to you to choose how that person looks. If a certain thing isn't in your heart, don't choose to communicate to people that you are this different person that you don't want to be. You are what you pretend to be and all that.

Honestly, I think guys don't get upset because there is the false notion that rape doesn't apply to them. It's the mindset that a)they won't be raped and/or b)they can't be raped.

It's easy to trivialize something that you think (consciously or subconsciously) doesn't apply to you.

For many more women, going by statistics alone--rape, or some kind of sexual assault, is a reality in their lifetime, and a traumatizing one.

He was just treating them "equally."

Just because you've heard someone say something about raping a competitor in a multiplayer game doesn't fucking make it ok. It is disgusting to say and should be treated as such in every situation if brought up."Culture" does not excuse behavior.

I agree it's a problem in itself that male rape is just thrown around as a joke, but I'm glad it's being taken seriously for at least ONE gender. In a perfect world, it would be for both. I just don't see the need to say "I'm going to rape X" no matter what the situation is.

The biggest idiots are the ones defending him because it's part of "gaming culture". It's that what gaming has turn into, then I don't want to be a part of it anymore.

Is being such an asshole to people you play an acceptable thing to do now?

.

What surprises me is that he's not an angry teenager, he's 25 years old.
It does show that people like him probably don't often communicate in "real world" scenarios or you would have learned by now how to behave yourself online.

If you are a completely different person online, then you need to grow the fuck up.

(Source; Used to be a huge douche online, had to grow up)

That's informative, one last question you ca all yourself a champion by being grandmaster within any league?

I was thinking its used against men since a mans manhood is the most important thing he has and to say you are going to take that is one of the worst insults you can say to another guy, and dudes get raped so its a reality in there life too.

What would happen if she would tweet "Going to rape some boy soon"? Nothing. Everyone would laugh.

"Equal rights", suppression of men like always.

"I tell my male friends I'm going to rape them all the time in Starcraft, so it should be okay here, because equality"

I believe he wrote that because a few months ago during a different tournament a male Korean progamer told another male Korean progamer that he was going to rape him in the next match. The audience burst out laughing, almost like it was adorable hearing this sweet looking Korean guy who could barley speak English mutter that phrase...he ended up never getting in trouble for it.

It seems like Destiny thinks that it is an injustice or something that Kas got in trouble for saying this to a women, when the male Korean did not. It's a stupid argument though, just because the one guy wasn't punished (when he should have been) doesn't mean this guy shouldn't be now so it just seems like he is kicking up a storm for publicity.

wow I agree, it would be taken as a lighthearted joke if a woman said it.
And that's the reason why this punishment is just too harsh.

Why should we treat women different than men? Everyone should be treated the same way. And his tweet was clearly some gaming slang.

oh okay joke post confirmed, nobody else quote this

I honestly believe this so much.

It's wrong no matter what, but if a girl said it; it wouldn't be this big of a problem because girls are raped more often then guys.

Edit:

Please actually read what I typed. Too many people actually think this is what I think; No. This is how the world views it.
Anyone joking about rape is wrong, please re-read this if you can't understand.

Some people can't read wow

I wouldn't laugh at this bullshit situation you've dreamed up but the bolded is hilarious.

Can we tag these threads Gamergate so I know to ignore them?

Nice flyby post. What does this thread have to do with gamergate?

The word rape still means the same thing in gaming.

Lol at all these pathetic trolls coming out. "EQUALITY MEANS I SHOULD GET TO SAY I CAN RAPE U HURRR DURR"

I didn't know that extra bit of history, thanks. And agreed 100%.

As for it's normalization, as a term, amongst men, it is ignored but should not be. When GAF collectively rented a BF3 server way back when, I was a part of the admin team. I advocated kicks/bans for use of "rape" "nigger" "faggot" etc., but was essentially overruled, as the gaming community uses those words a lot, so we should only ban when they are "overused".

PLEASE be joking.

Or do you really think the ability to joke about rape in competition is a men's rights issue?

That's informative, one last question you ca all yourself a champion by being grandmaster within any league?

Gran master is the best league, above master, it is the top 200 player for each server (Europe, America, Asia... etc).

No not even close, low Gran master are usually not pro gamer in europe, only the top 50-100ish, but that is really rough estimation (and sometime it is hard to say since some pros have numerous account...etc), in Korea where there is a lot of amazing gamers so 200 is not enough to hold them all in one league, while in Europe it is. And among the few pro gamer, actually very actually win tournament, apart from some very rare case they win money by their team/stream + small cash prize by being top 16... etc
