More like awesome and practical.

They are both dumb because having a crossguard that can cut your own fingers off is a dumb idea. But then again Star Wars is full of dumb things that run on the Rule of Cool, the most important rule.

I'd listen to this guy. Not only is he a primary source, but he'd kill you otherwise.

I'm not particularly sure what it is, but there's something about how they feature Boyega in this trailer that made me internally shout "Progress", despite black people in films not being a rare occurrence nowadays.

He is the first person we see.

as protagonists? you sure about that?

if you scroll down this list, you'll find that among major Hollywood blockbuster movies, those that have a black (or even non-white) protagonist, you can count on one hand, those who have a female heroine, you can count on maybe 2.
So putting a black person, a person of central/south American descent and a woman front and center in this teaser sure is great.

Not sure what the big deal with a black lead is tbh, Billy Dee Williams already played the lead character in Return of the Jedi.

Whoever is flying the Millenium Falcon is the main character.

Which part? That the new leads are normal looking, or that normal looking people aren't typically leads in blockbuster films?

Ridley is gorgeous. You make it sound like she's below average or something.

portman sure was and is one of the prettiest faces in hollywood.

Not just the face. Attack of the Clones is anything but memorable IMO, but I remember it had some pretty nice shots of Portman in that white spandex outfit...

Then and Now

Terrible photoshop job of the same promo photo.

So i took the teaser trailer and replaced the video with Star Trek Footage....To be honest they look exactly the same.

I get the feeling that J.J Abrams isnt changing his style at all despite Star Wars and Star Trek being completely different films.

In a thread with a lot of weird things going on, this one stands out and makes little sense. Even if you were making that statement, wait until we see more of the film. This whole thing is early, and the comparisons aren't even there yet.
Dat
total lack of
ass
Most definitely, but her body is great regardless.

I'm not too worried about the lightsaber. I'm sure they came up with a fighting style that justifies its design.

The Sith's robe, though? Looks really great.

Although this edit does absolutely nothing for your argument, I wouldn't be surprised if the style ends up being something in the ballpark of the most recent Star Trek films.

The thing is, at this point, the two franchises aren't all that different. Abrams has said as much that he's a far greater Star Wars fan than he is of Star Trek, and he consciously directed ST'09 as his wacky version of Star Wars, unknowing that he would eventually get the opportunity to direct the real thing a few years later. It's less Sci-Fi and more space opera. It's less methodical and intuitive problem solving and more fast paced action. It's dogfights and foot chases.

That's actually what makes Abrams kind of a boring choice for SW. He's, for all intents and purposes, pretty perfect for it, but we kind of already know what we're gonna get. Although it was really cool to see the Millennium Falcon being followed by a weighty, sweeping, clunky Abrams camera, it was also nothing anyone couldn't have imagined after seeing Star Trek.

It's a good choice, but a safe one that I don't think will offer too many surprises. And yes, it's probably ultimately damaging to the two properties because they'll probably end up being far more similar than they have in the past. It makes you wonder if had Abrams known he was going to be directing Star Wars down the line whether he'd take Star Trek in the direction he took it in or, hell, whether he'd direct Star Trek at all.

It'd be like if Nolan ultimately wanted to direct Batman, but was initially given the chance to direct Iron Man instead. He took his chances, and directed Iron Man as a relatively realistic, straight, serious affair to success. He then got the opportunity to direct Batman afterwards, and did it in the same way. Well now Batman isn't anywhere near as fresh or unique, and the two series are strangely similar when they never really needed to be. The two are far stronger as very tonally unique entities.

Looks are highly subjective, so it's a fool's errand to try and argue whether someone is gorgeous or *just* good looking.
I wasn't arguing it, I was simply stating that I like that they look fairly normal to me, and I think that's unusual. Of course it's subjective.

It looks like a big lightsaber with two tiny lightsabers sticking out of the sides.

But I'm sure we'll all see it so much we'll just get used to it. Remember when the title of episode II was announced? Attack of the Clones? I had never heard of anything more ridiculous. Now it's just normal.

Oh, I was thinking about the hilt, like the bit you hold; not the guard. Thought there was something else about it I was missing :P
