I don't miss him.

I really liked this episode. A lot at times.

Yeah, some problems remain, like the fact that korra's recovery could've taken less time, but that makes the season slow, not necessarily bad. Not as horrible as Book 2, like some of your reactions would have it. That's ridiculous.

And some of the expectations of Toph taking out Kuvira were more dreams than what was actually suggested in the show. Toph right out explains that she's too old. Powerful, but too slow now, and Suyin's attempt to take out Kuvira in this episode was also meant to show that Kuvira is indeed also quicker because of her age, besting Suyin in the end.

They DID try to take her out, for those who complain also about that. But they were outnumbered and even outmatched until Toph rescued them.

It's almost over now :(

1028 days ago I started this blog with a post about a color correction session for episode 6 of Korra. Today was the last of those sessions for the series. I still love this part of the process, as it is the final polish on the picture, gelling everything together and making it pop. Thanks so much to the Korra colorist, Randy Beveridge, who did such a killer job, played awesome music, and provided the good vibes. Thanks to Sean Holland and all the techs at Level 3 Post for making everything run so smoothly and keeping the sessions cozy.

*This would normally imply that we were finished with the picture on the finale, but we are still cranking on a handful of retakes. We’re using up every last minute we have before delivery to make this one-hour look as good as we can!

This pacing is the kind of thing I would have liked for the earlier part of the season. It's a shame that there are only 3 more episodes, so Kuvira will remain a one dimensional character (sorry Toa TAK).

That choreography though... That's the kind of creativity I loved from Avatar, how they used their environment for more than simple covers. Even if it made obvious that Kuvira will job against a full power Korra. And that nod to the current situation with Toph and Katara, and why they didn't do anything - although questionable considering the last series, as Azula said - was the final nail in the coffin to the hopes of Toph becoming a major force in the last episodes.

Even if the plot became predictable with the Republic City thing at the end, it was pretty enjoyable.

lmao

What about Kya and Bumi. Have they even been in this season yet? Iroh Jr. died slipping in his bathtub and breaking his neck. R.I.P.

In my opinion that is one of the bigger problems with Korra. They introduced plenty of characters, but almost no one got many scenes, not to mention actual characterization

Pretty sure Bumi showed up in at the start of the reunion episode. He was also looking really good compared to Book 3 Bumi.
Iroh jn is probably stuck doing office work for the army now after losing two fleets in a row ha.

Bryce confirmed Kya isn't coming back. Last time we saw her, she was heading back to the South Pole with Korra before the three years jump.

Bumi was in "Reunion" at the beginning, and since the Air Nation still has an important part to play in the plot, I'm betting he fights against Kuvira's Army too.

Kya got put on a boat and Bumi proved that the air bending diet does a body good. Iroh Jr. can no longer get by on name and Zuko voice alone. The higher ups probably noticed the poor recruitment numbers after the general populace noticed that Iroh Jr. has quite the body count on him for lack of leadership skills.

Wow, I can't even remember them being in this season. And damn, that sucks for Kya. Wow. Talk about writing her out of the show. Why even bother introducing her?

Damn. Oh well, I guess the family plot with Tenzin was great. So it was worth it. Kind of baffled with Iroh Jr. though. Like wat. Why even.

I was referring to after Toph came in and put everyone on their backs. Bolin uses lava while everyone is still on their backs then proceed to go for the kill.

I also wondered in the clips episode that line about Amon being a zombie was an acknowledgment to the crazy fan theories that Amon was Aang.

Well the original plan for Iroh jr was to have Asami join the army and pair up with him. Which ended up getting scrapped.

Welp looks like someone is going to die after that love speech. Didn't turn out so well for Zaheer back in Book 3.
Buh Bye Bataar Jr. Head...she hugged him.

Because what they did with her instead ended up being so much better.

Man the animation is looking meh.... Come on... These are the last episodes for gods sake...Why the animation gotta be droppin off now

After a second watch it's not as bad as I thought for some reason. Idk maybe i'm just paranoid because lately there has been more parts with off animation...

Actually that's probably because I didn't make it full screen the second time... heh

I'll take fantastic fight choreography over smooth animation if given the choice

So true. It really makes all the difference. Doesn't matter how high the production is, or how incredible the animation is. The choreography has to be inventive and interesting. It really elevates fight sequences, and can even make it rise above the production limitations.

Say what you will abut this show, but damn the choreography can be amazing. Tenzin vs. Zaheer. Korra vs. Zaheer in that finale. Kuvira vs Su (although more brief). Sooo good.

I'm still on the fence whether or not Kuvira has genuine feelings for Bataar or not.
I'm still not even sure she knows the guys name, but Toa told me she does so I'm conflicted on the matter, but she seems to go out of her way not to really use the damn thing. I guess anything is better than "Hey meat stick!"

Since we all know Kuvira doesn't give a shit about Batar, why choose to marry him? To spite Su? I guess she needed him to build the weapon and shit but she also had Varrick for that. Hm.

Let's not play down the importance of animation quality.

That's not really a concern here though. Good animation goes towards the fight scenes pretty much every time. I'm talking about for scenes outside of the fight scenes, because that's what's really being effected.

I think for me, some of the plot resolutions just felt a tad bit clunky. Like, the way Lin + Toph just patch shit up. How that entire plot kind of feels glossed over. It's hard to explain. But basically, it feels like they have these "ideas"...and the ideas are kind of there, but not entirely fleshed out with depth. They are being played out, but they don't entirely connect.

I've felt that way several times in this series (mostly with Book 2), and unfortunately a bit in Book 4. Like the Vine episode last week, and how Korra finally overcame her issues. It's like..okay, well that resolution happened, but didn't feel worth the drawn out plot to get there.

It's a hard criticism to have. Because it's like, on the one hand you think the plot is taking too long to get to where it needs to be. But then you feel like the resolution feels too glossed over. It's this weird in between state. It's like with Korra. Let's say Korra HAD been healed with Toph earlier in the season. It would have felt like, that resolution felt glossed over BECAUSE of how they handled the plot up to that point (jumping around to other people, only quickly cutting back to Korra and her training and not giving us enough time to really get into her emotional state and how it's impacted her). My issue is (before someone criticizes me)...is that I don't really think the show did a good job with Korra and her emotional stuff after the fact. So they re-set the plot. They decided to extend Korra's plot for the entire season. And I never really felt like, we got good emotional scenes that really fleshed her issues out in a way that would have made it worth it. So they basically dragged it out, but squandered the time they had with it.

The other issue I've had (and I know not everyone agrees, which is fine)...I feel like this season is like spinning its wheels. Like...all these things are happening, and yet it feels like nothing is happening. Korra had her freak out, and was rock bottom. Did her training. Then realized she was still broken. So she ended up going back to Republic City, having not learned anything...or progressing at all.

Even with like everything that happened. We basically have Kuvira off in the distance, planning a future attack. Everyone is back in Republic City. It's like, where we were at the beginning, save Korra is now not broken. Obviously more things have happened (like with Bolin and Su). But just the way the pacing has been, and how they have moved (or not moved) the main plot. It feels like they are spinning wheels. It's so frustrating.

Let's not play down the importance of animation quality.

That's not really a concern here though. Good animation goes towards the fight scenes pretty much every time. I'm talking about for scenes outside of the fight scenes, because that's what's really being effected.

It's important. Wasn't trying to say it wasn't. Just that, I think choreography can definitely make a fight sequence rise above the production limitation. But you are right, it does lose something with the animation quality is shit. It is what it is. Sucks Nick are assholes.

I actually thought that Book 3's finale had some quality issues. Some drawings looked really janky. If you go back and watch Book 1, you can tell a massive difference with quality to detail and where they are at now. Certain elements got much worse as the show goes on. Then again, I also think some things improved a lot (Choreography for one).

I'm still on the fence whether or not Kuvira has genuine feelings for Bataar or not.

It's kind of been the strange thing with Kuvira. Like...how she jumps into these muahahah evil villain moments. And then how she has her very tender moments. At first it's like, okay when she become all crazy, it's just an act to strike fear into her enemies and let people know she means business.

But then quickly, you had scenes like her being like "I always get what I want"...and all those zoom ins on her face with her evil smirk. Then as it played out, it was more like her "softer" mode she snaps into, is just fake. It's how she manipulates people. It's very good, because it's very believable. It feels like a real Kuvira.

Anyways, I kind of just accepted that she just manipulates people. And yet, this scene definitely feels like she really likes him. There is no reason to smile like that when he's not looking into her face. She seems at peace. But this is also that weird shit, because she's off on the side being all tender. But if this is real...then I guess she is soft..and tender too?

I just never got a full read on this character. I've always found her to be a tad bit...confusing. Mostly because I feel she's lacking in development. If only they had done a bit more, to show us her back story. Or WHY she felt this strong need to take over the Earth Kingdom. All we got was that moment with her and Su, and Su saying no. And that impacting her. I feel like Kuvira is always someone just out of our grasp. Like we don't entirely know who she is, or what she's about. The biggest development we got with her, was when she fought Korra and we got to see her cocky side, and her getting off on one upping her in front of an audience. We actually got to see a human side to her. But we haven't seen much since then.

Kuvira is mostly the stern/stoic monotone character, that is beyond ruthless. Only to have these side moments where she acts all soft and tender. I just find the character execution kind of strange tbh.

Probably to get more metal clan defectors.

Eh, when you have an army that massive....

Don't really see why you would need some Metal clan defectors. I dunno. It seems like a HUGE thing to marry someone just for that. Especially if she's getting off on power. Because if they marry, then he suddenly steals some of that power. If she was really using him, you would think she would ditch him after she got her use from him. Which IMO she pretty much has.

Note
that she didn't say I love you back to him
lol

Also
her headquarters is Zaofu instead of Ba Sing Se?

Yeah I was actually going to say that.

He says I love you, she doesn't reply back. Hah. I just don't know why she looks so at peace and is smiling. Maybe she's just happy she's getting her way. I dunno. Just don't see the point in getting married if she doesn't like him.

Maybe it's a mix. Like, she doesn't love him, but kind of likes him. lol

When I heard the name "Kanto", I thought, "Wait, that waterbender from the TCG?" Turns out that's "Kinto". Oops.

Also, I ship it:

Bahahahaha. Joke aside I liked that scene. The brother of your girlfriend giving you a "that'll do pig. that'll do" moment, almost felt like that was a gesture that he forgives him.
