Elite: Dangerous Standard Beta (Starting Jul 29th - $75)

Since we're talking peripherals, while not hardware based, I can't say enough good things about Voice Attack. Binding simple commands to be voice activated feels great in Elite.

I'll check that out!

Who in here uses Track IR or Freetrack? Really tempted by them...

I have a TrackIR5 that I've been using in the Mercenary combat demos, works well in Elite. Hard for me to imagine flying around or dogfighting without it.

Yup, couldn't play without it ( even more so since I play with the rift, meaning no easy access to the keyboard ).

Voices shortcut for things like supercruise, hyperdrive, boost, galaxy map ( which I have an hard time using with the rift ), landing gear, etc.. is very usefull ( and feel incredible ).

Yea the entire Milky Way. They even used NASA's starchart data to accurately recreate all the systems we know about (about 160k of them).

Damn it. And I started to do stupid things because I thought everything will be wiped :/

I'm unfriendly for the Federation. How do I get rid of my rep?

You can delete your save and start over if you don't have anything you're worried about losing. Otherwise you'll need to do missions for Federation stations.

I deleted my save and became an honest trader.... in a few hours I already have a decently upgraded Hauler able to ferry 16 tons of cargo. I think I'll wait for the Giantbomb podcast before doing my usual route again, so... probably wednesday = Cobra.

My poor Freeagle is still parked at the hangar, all alone and unused.

Should sell that puppy for 50k.

My body, HOTAS, and DK2 are ready for this. Though I find for longer sessions I forego using Oculus due to nausea. Anyone else play this for more than hour with the DK2?

Just finished a ~4 hour DK2 session. One I managed to get a solid framerate I'm having zero nausea issues.

As someone who knows close to nothing about gaming rigs, does the below look ok for this game? I'm about ready to order...

CPU: Intel Core i5 4690K
MOTHERBOARD: ASUS Z97-A
RAM : 8GB
GRAPHICS: 4GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 970
HARD DISK: 120GB SAMSUNG 840 EVO SSD
POWER SUPPLY: CORSAIR 550W
COOLER: CORSAIR H55
MONITOR: 27" Apple Cinema Display

Would the above get me good visuals + 60fps or should I go i7? Also I'll be using the DK2 occasionally.

Thanks sorry to go a bit OTT, but the above is literally just to play ED.

If anything, that is overkill. Great rig, and you don't need an i7.

400 BILLION

Oh lord

Yeah, you'll be fine. Running "normally" (on a monitor) with a GTX-680, I run max settings and can usually maintain 60fps for most of the time (drops a bit around stations, but still pretty high). Performance in DK2 is iffy for me right now. That's partially that I'm running "only" a 680, but the game doesn't seem completely optimized for it yet right now. I don't mind having to sacrifice a bit of fidelity for the Rift, but the last time I tried it I was practically having to turn it down to minimum settings just to get a decent framerate, and it's not really worth it at that point. I'd rather play it on a monitor if it's going to look that bad in the Rift. I've got TrackIR V5 for outside the Rift. It's nowhere near the same, of course, but at least I can still look around.

What's a good way to make money? got a hauler and jumpwise is practically the same as the sidewinder, and I'm getting reamed on fines around 17k on federation, my space trucker job is dying fast =/

Thanks guys

Oh lord

So an i7 would make no difference at all? I'm quite keen to play at 1440p and get as high a frame rate as possible, would the increased cpu power not help with that?

It definitely still works. My friend just started playing this tonight and sold his freagle.

Bizarre. When I tried to sell mine it offered me 0 cr since it was free but trading it for the hauler gave me full credit.

I used to know how to make decent money trading but not anymore. Haven't really put enough time in the trade route planning in the galaxy map to figure out how to use it properly. That and it seems it's not entirely accurate.

Thanks guys

No, not really. At that point other things tend to bottleneck the rig before the CPU. In any case, the games that are CPU-bound are pretty few (ArmA is one example). No need to spend money on an i7.

looks good but please tell me that 120GB SSD is not the only HD it came with

I'd have a hard time believing it wouldn't in a game like this.

But I cant find any benchmark comparisons to say for sure.

There's quite a few games that have come out this year that benefit from i7's. Developers taking advantage of hyperthreading will definitely give better performance to people using i7's.

Of course it will help, but at some point you get to a point of diminishing returns that just makes it not worth spending the extra $$. That is what I meant. The rig he posted is more than enough to run any modern game maxed without breaking a sweat, so there really is no need to get an i7.

Thanks gents, I'm mostly just interested in this game tbh, I can't imagine I'll be playing many other graphically intense games on it. I'm happy to spend an extra £80 on an i7 but only if there will be a noticeable difference with Elite.

I've not ordered yet, but I was planning on only having that 120GB SSD yes, is that a problem? It won't be my main PC, I use a Macbook pro for that. This rig is literally just for Elite and maybe a couple more games down the line.

At 1440p, I can understand his concern about getting any possible performance advantage he can.

With the size of recent games, the 120 SSD will be full after 3 or 4 max even if that is the only thing you have on it. I would either get another one dedicated to games or a fast mechanical one (WD caviar black) for less demanding games +data.

After you throw windows on it with its many updates and programs you'll use on a daily basis on top of the 1 or 2 games you'll play, that thing is going to fill up fast. It's not hard installing an extra HD later on but if your new to PC's, I'd recommend throwing in an extra one in there from the start for your media, games, etc

Man I did one run with 16 tons of rare eranin whisky and made 300k. It was an 18 jump trip that took neawlrly an hour but worth it :)

No idea, I can't play until the 16th. :(

Anybody know how this will run on an old AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ coupled with a Radeon HD 6950 2 GB? It ran Crysis respectably back in the day (albeit with a Geforce 8800 Ultra), but I honestly have no idea how it holds up with regards to newer games. I'm fine on the RAM front (8 GB).

400 BILLION

All a gimmick of course.

That's plenty and similar'ish to what I run with. The 970 can easily do 1440p at 60fps.

I didn't see anyone post this, here's a interview with Braben (3 days ago):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5BdtK-ZdHI#t=12

Although if you're into E:D there's not much news here. He talks about VR support, 16K support, offline mode, plus more.

Got the link from this article:

All a gimmick of course.

400 billion stars is not really a gimmick at all in the context of Elite. The reason is that they've mapped the Milky Way galaxy (which has approx. 400 billion stars..), locations and all, the stars you see in the night sky is exactly how they are in the game. So if we want to have a certain authenticity it wouldn't make sense to not include all of them.

So I sold my Eagle for 140k and got a Hauler with a cargo capacity of 18 tons. Right now I'm at 240k CR and I want to make 140k to buy a Cobra.

I'm in LHS1914/Eranin, what's the fastest way to make money?

Eranin? Maybe try what Orgun mentioned:
