From a source familiar with the matter, I can report that the deal Sony finally rejected was NOT a Marvel trilogy of movies that Sony would have control over. Instead, it was a co-production deal where Marvel and Sony would split future Spider-Man film costs 60/40 (Marvel paying the larger part) while MARVEL retained control of the Spider-Man creative property with the potential to have him cross-over into Marvel’s Phase films, like an appearance in Captain America: Civil War.

Now, what initially looked like a retaliation attack for The Interview from North Korea might drastically alter what happens to Spider-Man. All the players on the Sony side are now in hot water regarding their very public leaking of films and data at the hands of hackers. Sony’s parent company in Japan are apparently very angry at how this is all playing out. I’ve heard that the atmosphere is that anyone could end up getting fired over this if it begins to cause serious financial damage.

What I’m hearing from my little birds is that Sony, the parent company, views Sony Pictures’s handling of the Spider-Man property as disappointing. Sony wants to be all about “quality” films (actual one-word quote, not air quotes), and the Amazing Spider-Man movies have not been that, nor have the rumors of future films in the franchise. Sony Japan thinks the Marvel deal for Spider-Man is still on the table and they want to renegotiate as a return to quality, the 60/40 split is can be negotiated and Sony Entertainment’s October hard-line stance of wanting creative control is now mostly moot in the eyes of the higher-ups.

i'll believe it when it happens

Don't see Sony ever agreeing to profit splitting. Could happen but I don't think they will turn over one of their biggest moneymakers.

Reboot the movie franchise to be like the Spider-Man sentai show, Sony Japan. You know it is what needs to be done.

Latino Review has gotten every rumor wrong since 2003. There insider sources dried up years ago.

Also Marvel getting Spider-Man back is the movie version of Sony getting Crash Bandicoot back at this point.

Oh.....well here is something chuckle worthy.

I'd wish for Spiderman to be good again. All 5 films sucked, with the first one being the only one that gets somewhat of an pass. I fucking need the 'Civil War' arc on cinema screen. Now we only need Wolverine and The Avengers are complete in my book.

On one hand SM movies are profitable for Sony. On the other, if they keep declining in quality this could have a serious effect at the Box Office making it a smart move for Sony to sell the IP or profit-split at this point with Marvel before the franchises completely bombs.

Hearing all the in fighting at the studio, I'm not surprised at the shit that is getting thought up. They are literally throwing shit to the wall and see what sticks. Sony should spin them off so if they do go under it doesn't take the rest of the company with it.

Isn't that something the top dogs always wanted? To split sony pictures?

There has to be some truth to this at this point, right? Where there's smoke there's fire.

And right now, there's a lot of smoke.

Give up Spiderman? It's a franchise which prints money which Sony needs right now. Can't see it happening.

Sony allegedly lost money on MiB3, and ASM2 only made about 100 million more. It's a solidly B-tier superhero franchise now, and they have no animation, videogame, or merchandising rights.

None of their planned spinoffs have any of the hype of the expanded slate announced by Marvel/DC/Fox, and as someone pointed out in another thread, WB just about ate their lunch with the Suicide Squad cast announcement. There's no way they launch a Dane Dehaan Sinister Six h2h with a Will Smith movie, and they've already delayed ASM3 to the point where their star will be a 35 year old college freshman.

If the franchise keeps regressing in revenue eventually it won't be worth it to keep rebooting a $200 million/film property.

There's truth to the talks between Sony and Marvel. There's probably truth to the idea that we're headed towards a big shake-up at Sony Pictures (they've arguably got issues that extend beyond Spider-Man not being all that great). There's no real proof that what Latino Review is saying was the actual offer on the table, and there's absolutely no proof that Kaz and the higher ups at Sony are considering (or reconsidering) it at the moment.

Never would have thought that Japan would be criticizing quality of action movies (or any genre really) but if this is true I can appreciate it.

Yeah, not buying it....

Besides, where would Marvel have time to fit three Spiderman movies? Even if there was a cameo in Civil War, Spidey woudln't show up again until 2019.

Except Sony not seeing any of this merchandising money.

That's over 1.2 billion bucks that's lining Disney's pockets, not Sony.
