Elite: Dangerous Standard Beta (Starting Jul 29th - $75)

Crap, I forgot to try the new route planning. Has anyone checked it out? Is it useful/well implemented?

Well, my Gamma 2.0 experience so far is looking at the cool menu, and then staring at the spinning ship for a few seconds before it locks up and I have to kill the game via the Task Manager.

Fun times.
I'm almost sorry for asking such a basic question but have you restarted your pc after the update? I had to do it before it ran correctly.

If today is any indication release is gonna be a mess in regards to downloading the client. Over an hour on a 100 Mb connection and it's only 30% downloaded.

Route tracing is very nice, tested in a easy 2 systems travel with one stop in the middle and it was a good way to remember where I was supposed to go even if I changed my objectives in between because the computer keeps showing the next destiny of with a special icon until you introduce a new route.

Knowing the game was in Gamma, no wipe and near of launch I have been in for some hours, learning the routes. So far I have just made easy commercial travels and commercial missions, made some expensive mistakes but it seems I know have a grasp of the basics. I also went and bought a computer assistant for docking, super useful (a bit slow but I prefer it that way).

Is there a good way to learn about the game? I need to know a lot of stuff like how to increase my jump distance (at this moment I can't use my whole cargo capacity because it shortens my jump distance). I would also like to know what can I do and how to do it (I'm interested in commerce and exploration, not really looking for combat at the moment).

So, yes, the animation for entering and exiting SC is much smoother, but all they've done is put that animated blue effect up for the duration of entrance and exit. You are still unable to steer and the game is "frozen". So in GIF form it looks great, but in practice, nothing has changed.

Super stoked there's an FSD cooldown timer graphic now, that was so annoying.

Found an outpost that was apparently an aerospace museum.

Yes. Entering and exiting super cruise takes the same amount of time as last month when I played. Still too long IMO.

Jump range is just tied to the mass of your ship and how advanced your FSD drive is. Typically FSD upgrades will be found in High Tech stations.

What kind of stations sell mining lasers and refineries?

Also, how do you explore unidentified signal sources? I drop out of LDS at like 10k from them. When normal space loads, I still have a lock on the signal source, but nothing is actually locked in my nav system. The radar shows nothing, and j have no waypoint.

Industrial, extraction, refinery. Check it out in the System View.

Edit: Route planner is massively bugged to the point of almost unusable. Shocker there.

Is there some way to tell where the good asteroids are?

Is there a mining scanner or something?

No. Going into System View and clicking on the belts etc and making sure they're Metal and either Pristine Reserves or Major Reserves is your best bet.

You have to be 1Mm away max, 10 is wayyyyy too far away.

I think this is where you're going astray. You think that they spent this huge amount of work on creating these 400 billion systems and that's why there aren't more systems with more interactive systems at play. But that's just not the case.

I know they didn't, but as the game is nowhere near supporting any exploration past 1-2000 Ly from a station (due to lack of hull repairers etc), it all appears as just empty space and a gimmick. But hey, I realize many disagree, and that's fine, but that's just my opinion. Read the story from the guy that travelled thousands of lightyears and limped back to civilization with almost no hull.

You keep using that word "Gimmick". You should look up the meaning of it some time.

Stations and outposts will start appearing in the outlying systems once data and info about them are brought back (systems with Earth like worlds, mining belts, etc... may suddenly see an outpost pop up, then larger stations over time.

At the moment that space is "empty", but it won't always be.

I haven't read anything about this. Does your hull and FSD degrade as you make further jumps into deep space? I imagine the FSD could be taken care of by a repair module but the hull...

Just got the latest Gamma, but now the game won't even run!

I could swear I was just testing out the latest AMD Omega Drivers with Elite: Dangerous (Gamma 1.05). But now the game won't even boot up the title screen.

Well, my bindings are fucked. Yeah I know there's some fixes that can be tried but I'm a bit annoyed that this close to their launch they put out a patch that would fuck over custom bindings if I had any defined. Keyboard's pretty easy to redo but my god if I had my HOTAS configured...

I'm sure this has been asked and answered, but any HOTAS (and whatever else I need) recommendations?

Played this at Newegg after party at blizzcon and loved it.

Is this game pretty much for the hardcore flight sim fans? Or is it somewhat casual friendly? I've been itching to play a space flight game, but no interest in flight sims that require me to study a textbook just to learn how to land/dock even... :P

In it's current state, does the game feel incomplete or unfinished? I read that it's not even easy to play with friends since it's missing core grouping features?

I wouldn't say the game is that hard. I started playing with a 360 pad and was competent. It just requires a bit of concentration and dashboard navigating.

I think if you want to get into the basics of the game..flying, doing simple trade runs and whatnot its not to hard to get into. I think the scale of this game is intimidating. I mean when you look around how many star system are around you is staggering. I think the tutorials help out too in getting use to the game.

As for friends I don't have any personally who play with me. I have a few who will be picking this game eventually but none yet.

Okay so I would suggest not going into Livery at all until fixes are made. Applied the new Skull decal and got stuck on a verifying message that doesn't resolve, closed the game and now attempting to go into any game mode results in a CTD. Basically a save corruption/database error of some sort. Avoid at all costs.

Any DK2 impressions of the latest release? Everytime I tried it in the past it always had some kind of weird bug (like missing lighting on right eye only) or persistent stutter.

It's working in Direct mode now, right?

I'm not familiar with the old Elites so it might be the opposite of what people want from them, but do we know if they intend to make that aspect more about the player ( or wings ) ? like being able to make/buy a station/outpost in the long go ?

Didn't try much since I logged out before the patch just as I got to my first asteroid to try mining, and came back just to discover that I don't want to mine with a rafinery with only one slot ( manual vent after every single cargo scooping since it usually have 2 mineral was making me crazy ), then the server went down a again.
But from what I tried + what I read, extended mod is still better than direct mod, got some big slowdown during my mining attempt yesterday, by I don't know if it had anything to do with the rift.

Honestly at that point I'm pretty happy with the rift support itself in extended mod ( thought a good direct mod would be far more user friendly ); my biggest problem with the DK2 support is that the UI really need some work ( at least to compensate DK2 'low' resolution ). Curved menu when using the rift would be a big start, making some UI element bigger ( or allowing us to choose it's size ) would be huge too ( cargo scoop.. ) same with allowing us to change color of the UI elements ( text of another color than the background, etc ).

I think they really should ad a little external executable to configure the controls. The in game mapping is a pain in the ass IMO when using a lot of different input devices.

I takes a lot of time to scroll up and down the controls menu till you find what you are looking for, having all of this on one screen would be much better.

I finally had everything setup and forgot to backup the bindings before updating :/

"In marketing language, a gimmick is a unique or quirky special feature that makes something "stand out" from its contemporaries. However, the special feature is typically thought to be of little relevance or use. Thus, a gimmick is a special feature for the sake of having a special feature." - wikipedia

Sounds about right. 400 billion empty star systems has been used in marketing, but adds little value to the game.

Hull will degrade by overheating while fuel scooping, by NPC taking down your shields, etc. On a long enough trip, it's inevitable that accidents might happen and hull will suffer. Modules got the auto-maintenance, so no problem there.

I feel like the Wear and Tear costs have skyrocketed. Seems... too much.

Yea it's crazy, thankfully wear and tear is 100% cosmetic, so you can ignore it.

Actually, wear & tear is supposed to affect a number of things like reputation gains, system malfunctions, ship appearance, and police interdiction rates. Michael Brookes has commented on it being too high a cost though:

The numbers are a bit harsh at the moment and will be tweaked.

Michael

So the cost will be going down, hopefully before next Tuesday.

Son of a bitch, did not want to know that!

But it's unclear if it actually does affect anything even if the original design documents hinted at it. A lot of the original design is not in the game (yet).

Sorry for such a quick repost but...

I'm sure this has been asked and answered, but any HOTAS (and whatever else I need) recommendations?

Need to know what to ask for for Xmas :)

I downloaded the patch last night, and haven't logged in yet because I was terrified of this (saw a thread about it while the patch was downloading). Any updates to this?

Edit: son of a bitch, all of my hotas controls (and keyboard bindings) are gone. This is irritating as hell.

Can't go wrong with the x52 pro

Looks like Wear & Tear is being adjusted (thankfully!)

And some questions:

If you accept a mission that is illegal, how do you turn it in without getting scanned for the cargo when returning? Or are these missions just rep based and scans won't cause an issue?

FSD vs "supercruise" ... are these the same? I know there's the galaxy jump cruise which is all Doctor Who-ish but then there's the one you can actually move/control with the yellow markers and orbits ... do I need to map these separately? I remember reading they were combined, then they weren't ... but not sure if it's the same thing.

Ive onyl got the combat training module, but enjoyed just cruising around in the ice field last night. Its awesome. Also, looking around in the cockpit and bringing up the left and right screens never gets old. Couple of questions tho:

Can you get out of your ship in the space stations at all? Or is it something that might be implemented? The stations look amazing. I really want to just wander around, and admire the exterior of my ship :D

Also, i hear if your ship gets destroyed thats it. Its gone for good. So like, what happens if you only have one ship? And fuck all money? Do you just start panhandling in the stations??

I drop out at 10k kilometers from the unidentified source (that's .1 Mm), and I have no waypoint or target, I'm just in blank space. Nothing on the radar either.

If I go back into frameshift, the signal source is there again and locked. I have no idea what I'm supposed to do.

It all depends on what your nav target is. If the nav target is in-system, you'll supercruise. If it's another star, your hyperdrive will kick in.

So I decided to make the jump, I got myself the Thrust master T-Flight Hotas.
Now I just need the game .

Can't wait to try it with this game .
