Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

I don't really mind the black bars actually, as long as I'm getting the correct aspect ratio and my GPU is not working any harder than rendering 1080p. I had just assumed that if a game offer 16:10 then it would fill the screen, and when I saw black bars I thought something was wrong and I kept quitting and fiddling with control panel settings. At least now I can rest knowing it's working how it's meant to.

Yeah, I've got used to them myself, it's better than the alternative of having to select a 16:9 resolution and upscale, which would be blurry.

GPU-Z and MSI Afterburner both seem to report clocks correctly.

GPU Boost 2.0 is arguably one of the most annoying things I've ever encountered. At least Intel Turbo Boost on CPUs gives you a predictable clock result. After tinkering with my BIOS for hours, I still have NO FUCKING IDEA what setting the various clock options actually does in terms of how high the clock actually boosts. I can tell you that it never boosts to any actual clock value you set manually, it's either randomly 50+ above the value you set or 100+ below. It's literally NEVER the value you set as the maximum boost clock. Fuck you Nvidia, stop being so fucking douchebaggy and just let people fucking overclock with some predictability.

Huh, so I upgraded my computer to Windows 8.1 and in the process of reinstalling MSI Afterburner I don't need power limit % anymore. It's been replaced with a greyed out version of shader clock. I'm on 4.0.0 and have the latest Geforce drivers.

Any ideas?

Edit: Nvm clean reinstallation fixed it.

Flash a custom BIOS if it really bothers you.

That's what I've been doing, I've been editing my BIOS and flashing it. The clocks I set have no correlation with what the video card decides to set for itself. It's possible I'm not understanding how the voltage and boost tables work, but as far as I can tell it always sets some incomprehensible value.

Set your clock speed in nvidia inspector and force a power state. It'll maintain that clock regardless.

I just found a game that doesn't work with DSR. Disney Infinity 2.0. Sucks because the game is ugly as fuck and could really use some help.
Are there a lot of games that don't work with it?

Ordered the Gigabyte GTX 970 G1. Hopefully I made a good choice! I'm curious to hear the noise difference as my EVGA GTX 760 is dead quiet most of the time.

One thing to note about the G1 is that, if I'm not mistaken it seems to run at 100% fan speed any time the drivers are not active (e.g. during boot or before installing the drivers in Windows). Could be a safety feature to cool down the card quickly in the event of OS crash/reboot from overheating or something. Not sure if this is the case with all cards.

Hmm, that is interesting. I will have to remember to see if that is the case with my G1. I do have Windows and my Nvidia drivers on an SSD so it shouldn't be a huge deal if this does happen I suppose, since everything should load up quite quickly.

I'm mostly worried about possible coil-whine :( hoping for little to none.

What do you mean more efficient? Run faster? Did you notice any difference in image quality? (perhaps compared with 0% smoothness)

I don't have any hard data but it looked to run at more frames per second. I also thought the image quality was identical. I fiddled with it in BF4.

I had always ran 2560x1440 as a custom resolution before DSR was a thing, and I'm still doing it now.

I just did some googling and a few people finding the same thing.

Obviously it's limited in that my monitor won't let me run custom resolutions above 1440p, so if I want a 4k downsample I have to use DSR.

CS:GO so far. I have only tested CS:GO, Wasteland 2 and Dark Souls 2 (and Pac Man CEDX+) out of which CS:GO is in unplayable condition while the others worked like they should.

Have you tried setting a frame rate cap in Riva Tuner?
I have a 970 and I'm not seeing hitches in anything. (But I haven't played Far Cry 4, which apparently hitches for basically everyone.)

Should I wait for a GTX 970 TI (is this a thing?). Sorry novice computer builder here.

I don't think this is possible, the GM204 is already complete but Nvidia could release a "GM204-24" like they did with the 770 (GK104-24).

AMD will also have the new R9 300 sometimes in 2015 (Q1 ?).

I'll try that (or similar) today and fiddle around with other settings too

FC4 runs fine for me

I'm pretty much at the point that I don't believe people when they say a game stutters/hitches, until I try it myself

I don't have problems in DAI either

I haven't had any issues in CS:GO with my 970. I don't use any frame limiting or anything myself. I keep it uncapped. I don't know my exact settings but I average 120fps with them. My card doesn't even boost with the game lol.

I just played few round with it and it wasn't as bad as it was with bots earlier. Still, there are some stutters that totally fuck you up every now and then. So I'd say playable but not nearly optimal. I am going to try Evil Within now and see how it fares

Hmm. Latest drivers? No RAM issues? Turn off any overlays besides the steam overlay if you have any. I've found multiple overlays to cause conflict and cause stutters in other games like BF4. Running Riva Tuner statistics server while playing BF4 turned it into a stuttery mess.

The other thing I'd suggest is turning everthing down to low and see if the stutters are still there. With the BF4 example, I was seeing the stutters regardless of the in game settings so it helped identify an external source as the issue.

I picked up a new CPU today and have decided to grab a new GPU before opening up my PC but all the talk of excessive coil whine has got me a bit apprehensive.

I did a search to see if the issue had been fixed but everyone seems to only offer anecdotal evidence one way or the other.

So can anyone confirm that this issue has been fixed or point me toward a manufacturer that seems more reliable.

I'm a mild PC enthusiast at best and I don't really keep up with hardware, I just usually buy mid to high end stuff (no titans for me) when I decide to upgrade. am loathe to shell out 500+ for a 980 only to end up annoyed by the noise.

When people talk about the coil whine are they saying it happens all the time, during normal gameplay? I've been keeping my ears open for it on my msi 970, but the only time I hear it is in a menu or something when I'm hitting like 600+ fps. It is annoying (and disconcerting) then, but it's not like it's something I actually stress over.

Hasn't it all been confirmed that these will never happen as the 970 and 980's 256bit bus will never be able to utilise it.

Reportedly it's because there's something of a GDDR5 shortage and Nvidia doesn't want 8GB variants stealing memory modules away from the 4GB cards while they're selling so well.

Any ideas when a GTX 980 ti might launch? The 780 ti launched roughly 6 months after the 780 and one month after the 290x.
Single GTX 980 or SLI 970s overclocked? I'm building a new PC and want to really beef it up ;)

Please helpGAF
I don't personally know how well SLI holds up compared to CF. But based on my CF experience I wouldn't recommend starting with a SLI/CF set-up from the get go. Games aren't always supported the top GPU gets hotter than normal, performance doesn't always scale as you'd hope.

Lots of unecessary backlash on sli in here...

If you game at resolutions over 1080p, want max settings and 60fos then an sli setup is the only way to go.

He'll even if you want to down sample or game at 120fps the sli is needed.

I thought we were well past the era where everyone hated on sli just for the hell of it, spreader bullshit about heat and noise issues and said that people only get sli for e-peen. Apparently not...

If you need the extra performance and wouldn't mind waiting a few weeks after a game releases for an sli profile in some cases then go for it. Get what you want if you can afford it, don't listen to the irrational negative nancies on here.
