YAKUZA 5 LOCALIZED FOR PS3

I felt so terrible getting into the series late and not supporting the games at launch, but I will buy this immediately. I'm still so unbelievably happy that this is happening.
I also hope I can convince some friends to try the series when opportunities arise.

Easy there, remember the reactions to the Yakuza 3 demo before you get too worked up.

Yakuza 3 got a lot of attention due to the controversy over the edits, so when the translated demo hit PSN a lot of people new to the series grabbed it. And that's when the flood of complaints about the PS2-era animations and text sounds came in (although I suspect the major problem there was the amount of unvoiced dialog even in the demo). There were probably more lost customers when people realized there never was anything really dirty in the games, even with the pole dancing, hostess clubs and massages. I think if Sega had made an LE that came with a shot glass and a vinyl LP of the soundtrack the point would've come across better.

Despite the above, I've been wondering if putting up Yakuza 4 as a PS+ title would be a good idea ahead of the Yakuza 5 release. It's a good entry point as the player starts the game as a character new to the series, but it also starts out with about 30 minutes of cutscenes out of the first 45 minutes of game.

ps: Please don't do viral marketing type stuff, people will see through it and get turned off.

They already have ;)

e: oh, you mean as a freebie

I am a HUGH fan of the Yakuza games having played through 1-4 multiple times (though 2 is still my favorite). Five not coming to the US was a real disappointment for me. I sought out guides online for how to advance the story but quickly decided that this would be doing myself and the game a disservice.

I was so happy when I heard the announcement I ran up to my wife with my iPad and showed her the trailer (she's had to hear me complain about 5 for a long time now). She was actually happy to hear it coming as well since she really, really likes the stories.

3PP and Sega thanks guys, really. Thanks!
Though I would absolutley love a physical version ;p

I've never referred to Yakuza 5 to be fair, only the samurai and Yakuza PS4.

Eh...right, I somehow remembered you saying "Yakuza in the West will happen". But you actually wrote "Yakuza PS4 will happen". Nevermind then! No credit for you, sir! :P

Basically, the mainline titles are getting priority right now. So there's an order to things. Yakuza 5 has to come first because Yakuza has quite the vocal fanbase. I think skipping it would result in a very negative reaction from the die hard fans, especially when it was the most requested title.

To be honest, I, as a Yakuza fan, had already given up hope with Yakuza 5 on PS3. I could see Yakuza 0 PS4 happening, since it is a mainline title and a prequel at the same time, so consumers won't be afraid of starting from there and will think is the best value because is not a spin-off. IMO that title has been designed to enter new markets like China, and because it is already being localized to a different language, it is reasonable to think it is more "localization-friendly" than other Japanese-only releases (like Ishin or 5). So in those aspects it was the perfect title to bring Yakuza to the West again. Personally I didn't mind skipping Yakuza 5 to go straight to 0, but it should have happened eventually before a potential Yakuza 6...for example in the format of a PS4 "HD remaster" of Yakuza 5 and previous entries (which will eventually happen anyway), developed in parallel by a third-party.
That's how I thought things would happen. I am happy that we get Yakuza 5 on PS3, but also puzzled. By the time it releases it will be a 3 years-old niche title on an agonizing platform, on a digital-only 44GB-required-to-install format and all of that probably at full price...even Yakuza fans are going to be hard-pressed to buy it (BUT THEY BETTER BUY IT >:D)

[...] at least one Yakuza PS4 game is already planned for localisation.

Music for my ears :D.

I think we'll get the new Yakuza PS4, and then the stand alone samurai one, but by that time, I don't think they'll really give a crap to put any real effort it. It's really just about being nice to fans now so the best strategy is to reduce risk as much as possible, and just get the games out there steadily. At the very least, you get a lot of good will from the fans I guess.

If Kenzan is anything to go by, I don't think we'll ever get Ishin. I think Sega needs to work on its bandwith for localization so they are faster releasing these games. I don't know if the bandwith problem is budget or just manpower, I'm betting for the latter. I think localization work is too reliant on support from the original development team, so they become the bottleneck, especially when that support is always going to be lower priority than developing new entries, which sell easily a million copies in Japan alone.

It's our job as ambassadors of this game to get a new audience discover it. SEGA tried and failed. We have one more shot.

Starting with the power of GAF. There will be hundreds here probably willing to bite.

When we have more information we can start creating some threads.

We must work together to keep hope for Ishin, Zero and inevitably Yakuza 6 ALIVE.

BELIEVE!

P.S mods please let us make some viral marketing threads. i know what your thoughts will be when seeing this but come on, open your minds a little, think outside the box. thank you and regards.

The best way to 'viral market' the game is maintain positive outlook, keep supporting the game through positive comments and remarks in this and any other Yakuza 5 thread that comes up....

and maybe not make bolded italicized sentences :p

That'd be more than I ever dared to dream!

I was banned last week when this got announced.. All I I can say is..... This is a fucking God damn miracle. I remember basically every month pleading for sega to put this on PSN as a last resort, or even offer English subs as a patch on the jap PSN version if there were any licensing issues. I shed tears when this was announced.. It sucks that it's not a physical copy but thats ok, I'll take whatever scraps I can get at this point.

Of all the yakuzas left not translated, I'm so glad they went with 5. I want Ishin, kenzan, zero and the 1&2 hd remakes as much as anyone else, but if they could only do one more yakuza 5 was the right call. If you think about it, sega has been pretty awesome, they've released five yakuzas since the first one even tho the first didn't sell very well. Will get day 1.

Just have some gif of badass things happeneing. It working well on Driveclub thread

I think some fellow GAFfers are gonna make a Community Thread for the series. If we can have it be posted in GD first before being moved to Community a month later, than that would be a good way to spread awareness of the series.

Ishin won't happen. Yakuza 5 is only happening because Sony pushed for it, at best if it sells well we'll get Zero. Do yourselves and don't hope for anymore.

I mean some famous YouTuber could play Y5 and turn it into a sensation but we all know the chances of that happening are slim.

People said Y5 would never happen, but we still believed~
Honestly as is, we should just be greatful for any Yakuza game that gets localized and enjoy it as best as possible.

You should all check out the Yakuza Black Panther series on PSP. They are really fun, especially the sequel.

It wasn't Sega developed but I agree, it was a shit ton of fun.

I wish they made a remake or sequel for consoles. If you ever saw the movie Crows Zero or read the manga Crows, it's basically that in video game form.

We need more delinquent and yankee video games.

I never got through all of Ryu Ga Gotoku 5 (import copy), but that was because of the language barrier. It's really an excellent game. Those of you who liked Yakuza 4, will also like Yakuza 5. :)

Currently I'm working on a huge Yakuza video about the whole series and why people should play it. Hopefully I can get more people into it that way.

Agreed. I loved the first game, especially the boss battles in the arena. Only issues I had with the game were that I couldn't button bash to save my life - getting out of grabs etc. was a complete pain in the ass. Also the challenges (that were separate from the main game) seemed to become insanely difficult when it pitted you against more than one person. The fighting system in that game felt very focused on just one on one fights, and not group battles.

Plus KHH subs is working on translating the game so people with custom firmware Vita's should be able to enjoy the game (eventually!).

Are the Black Panter games the ones by the guys who did WWF No Mercy and Def Jam Vendetta/Fight for NY? If so, I'm all about that.

That's the one. They did a great job as well, you get a plethora of different styles to play around with and it makes the game feel quite unique compared to the other Yakuza games.

Look what I just bought off a friend:

Both for 15€, it's a steal. Yakuza 2 doesn't have the cover but I can print one.

Now I'm only missing 1 and Ishin. And the Black Panthers too.

Now I can play 2! Yay.

Enjoy 2. It's the best game in the series in my opinion (although 4 was really good, too).

Might try this out. I was told once that if I liked walking around buying pork buns in Sleeping Dogs, I'd like the Yakuza series, lol.

So.. you're playing them in reverse order, lol. The first is probably my favourite because it triggered my love for the saga despite the infinite loading times.

It's not removed? It comes up when I search for it on their channel.

Yeah, that was weird. I couldn't see it in the video section of the Playstation channel (and it's still not there though it was before) and then I did a standard search on Youtube for "Yakuza 5" with the 1 week filter on and still nothing came up. But evidently, the trailer is still around and I jumped to conclusions. My bad.

Yakuza 2 baby, the best game in the franchise (though I haven't played 5 yet). You're in for a treat there.

at least one Yakuza PS4 game is already planned for localisation.

It's great they still have one of them planned in the pipeline. I'd be ecstatic if they also did Ishin, but I'm more than happy with 0 and it should be prioritized. I don't mind if they go all digital even for the PS4 game(s) because at least we're possibly getting them.

Excellent idea.

I'm really enjoying it so far. My point stands though, I don't think localizing Ishin would do much for revenue or brand awareness. Definitely less than a mainline entry if we're being honest.

It would be pretty out of left field for new comers. 0 is far more easier to sell.

Anyone know what the difficulty's like in 5? Is it as challenging as 3, or more toned down like 4?

Somewhere in between from my experience, closer to 4 than 3. I'd recommend playing on at least hard mode from the offset. Some of the side stuff like the fighting arena can be pretty brutal though depending on the character (Shinada) but otherwise I barely died when I played the game (on normal difficulty).

Weirdly, Ishin was tweaked to not only make enemies more agressive but the damage you took on higher difficulties from certain weapons/enemies/attacks was pretty evil. I can guaratee if Ishin got brought over here most people would justifiably hate the battle dungeon mode, its just plain evil toward the end!

Well in my opinion its about as easy as 4, if not a little more, reasons because
you gain the ability to have an extra life bar on top of which all the food from restaurants are divided into 3 groups(red, blue and orange), red increases the damage of heat actions, blue lowers the rate heat would deplete from you and orange increases your attack power and you have two levels of it, you can only recover the second life bar by eating from restaurants(so can't use health drinks to recover it), with stability unlocked, some characters gain a bit of super armor allowing them to power through enemy attacks and Kiryu himself gains the ability "Pride of the angry dragon" which is basically a rage mode in which he cannot be damaged except by certain moves/throws.

Ishin was great as it was made tougher, also add the fact
Amon in this game is one of the toughest incarnations of him(Kenzan is the other tough one)

Haha....well I was gonna make one when Irishninja had made the Shenmue one but I had froze in my tracks because I knew the sheer amount of shitting on people would have gotten just for posting in it and saying they are Yakuza fans or even Sega fans in general.

Ishin really kicked my ass for the first few chapters, I held out in vain for a Yakuza 5 style
second helath bar
but it never came! I just got good at the game, leveled up my moves etc. and used all of Ryoma's styles to my advantage (I loved the triangle counter move with your single sword style, its badass!).

Amon
in Ishin was nuts. The first phase was ok, I managed to beat him after a couple of tries and I thought "that wasn't too bad" but the second phase really schooled me. I had to make up my own method to beat him, seeing as he was lethal when he unleashed his combo. I still beat him though (eventually!).

I've not actually managed to fight him in Kenzan! though. One side mission screwed up for me so I never met the requirements to face him. I really need to replay it so I can 100% complete it next time round!

No more like, 3>4>2>5. I might play Dead Souls before 2 just because though.

I had already played 3 before, but it was just lent to me. Now I bought it.
Seriously, Yakuza it's like the only series you could say I'm collecting. :lol

More like 4. The chases aren't even a challenge anymore and they were very tough in 3.

I noticed that.
So 4 being easier than 3 it's not just an impression of mine?

been playing through Yakuza 1...such a good game. I really hope we get Ishin eventually, I really dont see it happening though. That is even more niche than the mainline games

there used to be some amazing .gif of the yakuza 3 NA front cover in which the mouth would open

someone post it

Yakuza 5 instead :

yeah but chases are garbage so who cares?

They overhaul chases completely for Ishin, for the better in my opinion. They are way easier but actually fun this time around!

It was Dead Souls couple of chases that I hated, something out a normal chase + zombies made it that much more annoying for me for some reason...

But you said 5 was the best. Nowhere did you or I talk about sales. You said "Yakuza 5 might be the best." I said "But dude, Ishin." I fail to see how you got onto sales.

Sales do not equal being "the best" in my opinion. Ishin is definitely my favorite Yakuza game, and the one to play right now (on PS4, of course).
