Korra GAF has to do something after the show. We should write like a collective series that re-writes the series. I'll do the Amon/Korra romeo re-write. We should do it guys. Like seriously.

Call them what ifs. Also, to me, writing around established events is more fun.

But honestly, do whatever. It's not like we'll have a show to watch.

1) Make Avatar Community OT
2) Discuss how Korra could've been better
3) Have a community rewatch of the first series and Korra

I will write my Mary Sue fan fic where a new character called Mai Zhu is introduced. She's this absolutely stunning new girl on Republic City, who when she was a baby was infused with the secret baby of Vaatu and Raava, called Raatu. Having both the powers of the avatar and the dark avatar she struggles with being too powerful and the universe not accepting her since there's already an avatar, which makes every guy and girl from the main plot totally have the hots for her and all she wants to do is belong but everytime she tries to that lame-ass Korra and all the other master benders need her help. Ugh. Teen problems.

A new plot twist... Korra dies after S2. Kuvira and Zaheer go on a road trip for the last two seasons. They discover the true meaning of friendship.

Now all it needs is some korvirra action in there heh. Who will Korra choose the formidable Amon or the stoic Kuvira.

Sounds good.

Honestly, if I was ever going to write something about Avatar, it probably wouldn't focus on the Avatar at all, and just a story about characters.

If you guys are down, I'll create an OT for Avatar/Korra. It will be about the series in general. I think it would have to go in the Community section? Not sure how that works (since it's not about a current subject). Anyways, we could organize a re-watch of ATLA and Korra. And talk about it as we re-watch. We can even set schedules like its live on TV etc. Like one episode a week (although some might prefer going at a quicker pace).

We don't have to only do re-watch. We could do other things like writing fanfic (I know some of us were joking, but I think it could be fun).

So yeah, I'm totally down if the community is. Also, I would like to do some Skype audio chats to sometimes. Maybe incorporate that into our re-watches?

I just don't want to say goodbye to our group, ya know? I dunno. I would like to keep in touch with you all. I really couldn't have gotten through my cancer without your support. You are like my family. I really would hate to say goodbye to you guys, just because the show is over.

Talk to a mod, see if we can get a grace period on the community thread in the OT before it has to go into the community ghetto.

Make the OT, I'm down for a re-watch. A few episodes per week sounds good to me but I'm fine with anything.

This is a good idea.

Most OT start in the main and only move to community once they establish themselves. I know because I asked before I made the Star Hunter Society and Serial threads where I should put them.

Also, I'm calling you out, Azula

Sure! Don't know if I'll be able to participate in any of the activities, but at least be able to join and comment on a Avatar/korra OT from time to time. I'm suppa' busy right now with work and "adult" responsibilities, but yeah, I don't want to leave this great community behind.

Cool, I reserved my spot. Let me think about it, and I'll post my list soon. I'm always really bad with lists. Well, I like to do them. But I can't ever decide. But I like the premise of your thread. So should be fun.

Also, thanks for the heads up about OT community. I guess I'll just start it in Off Topic for now, and then if they ever move it, they'll move it. But yeah, I'll make it once Korra ends. Prob wait like a couple weeks. Since no doubt, people will want to talk about the series ending and get it all out in the Korra thread first.

TBH, I don't expect the activity stuff to be that active. The show isn't live anymore, and also people are really busy with school and work. And there is just the time zone issue stuff. But I'll def try to get it going randomly. Because why not. It would be fun when we can do it.

Me neither.

Y'all are pretty chill. Favorite part of gaf tbh.

Should be less negative too. Like, I haven't been a big fan of certain things in this show. But I know once it's over and stuff, I'll come to peace with a lot of it. I mean, I'll still hold my opinions on what I feel went wrong, or what they could have done instead.

But I do think for the most part, the people sticking around will be the hardcore fans, or people that just love the overall world (even if they aren't fans of certain aspects). So it should be more of a love fest. Plus, the re-watch stuff for ATLA will be fun, since it will be done like a like a Live Korra watch. And most of us on GAF didn't see ATLA live while talking to this group.

So yeah, will be great.

Yeah i'm definitely down for a ATLA/Korra OT once Korra finishes. Should be a lot fun re watching ATLA again and discussing it with you guys.

I wouldn't consider 6 minutes a big deal.

Man remember when Avatar had the 2 hour finale special?

Yes.

From that, to this:

To be honest, I actually expected giant mechas the instant we were told Korra's world would be based on steam-punkish tech. Made sense. And I always imagined an Earth-based villain to end a season with a giant mecha or colossus.

Last Airbender Reddit dug up this spot-on prediction about the final season before we knew anything about Book 4, from more than three months ago.

So, i'm seeing a lot of people saying that the next season will be all about the fire nation, so the Korra series will have 4 elements themed seasons. But i have a different idea of where the series is going...
The Korra series is inspired by early 20th century history. You have early automobiles, movies, radio referenced around the show. Even the bathsuits designs are old fashioned. And the issues Korra face in the show reflects that: In the first season we had Amon and the equalists, obvious similarities with communism. In the second season we had an civil war, shaddy bussiness practices and some bits of imperialism (Tho' all of this was kinda subverted with everything being part of Unalaq's plan to conquer the world with the help of Avatar's Satan). And in Season 3 we had anarchism, more specifically the "Let's get our hands dirty" kind, that used to exist in the early 20th century
So, this brings us to Korra season 4 and what i think it will be about: The rise of fascism
And they set it up perfectly. For starters, the Earth Queen showed great resentment towards the avatar and the Firelord Zuko when she met Korra, clamming they took advantage of the previous king and that Republic City is earth kingdom Territory. Said sentiments are probably shared by the Dai Li, that is still around for some reason, after they betrayed Ba Sing Se (so my guess is that the earth queen ressurected the Dai li institution, so she could prepare for war, like build a secret airbender army, among other things)
With the earth queen dead and probably no heir (if she had...kinda of huge thing to be overlooked by the red lotus) the old system crumbled. Historically, this is the perfect time for an authoritarian and militaristic government to rise to power, see Napoleon after the french revolution, and Nazis after post-wwI germany. This organization could be the Dai Li, lead by a new villain.
Now, with the earth kingdom gone, city states like Omashu and Zao fu are going to claim independence. Small cities like the one in S03E03 will be happy to not pay more abusive taxes to another authority. So this new "earth Kingdom" objective is unify the territory again under their flag, including anti-monarchist Zao Fu, and the previouslly earth kingdom territory, republic city.
And it will be Avatar Korra's mission to stop them.
Other reasons i think this is the path the series is going, or at least, why it would be awesome:
Higher Stakes: If Korra fails, the world could be thrown into another huge war
Plenty of earth benders villains, but they were never the main villains of the season
Earth Kingdom situation need to be addressed
Toph, Kuvira and Zuko's Daughter (fire nation is allied with republic city) can fit in the story.
The Dai li is awesome.

Yes.

That's a pretty good predication.

What I'm getting from this is that an earth bending Hitler is a possibility.

I still don't like the colossus though :P

I mean, Earth Kingdom was thrown into Chaos because of Zaheer. While Bryke isn't one to continue plot, they really couldn't ignore that one. Although they did set up the Red Lotus just to abandon it.

But yeah, I always hate reading that stuff. Because on paper, the season has a lot going for it. So much potential. =/

Didn't President Raiko or someone say something along the lines of "we don't know how many other Red Lotus members are out there" at the end of season 3? So much for that.

Yeah. Thing is, I'm okay with them not continuing plot season to season (well not really, but I accept it). But the way they ended Season 3, they have an entire end scene where all the world leaders are like "The Red Lotus are all around the world, infiltrating all these places. There are more of them out there, and we will need to protect the earth". I'm butchering it. But they actually set it up as being a continuing problem.

I don't understand why. What that even adds to it. I guess they wanted to hammer home the fact that, Zaheer wasn't like the red Lotus. He was just one aspect of it, and not like the sole leader. Or something. That it was an organization still going. But it really was a terrible way to end the season for that kind of plot..

Yep both the President and Zuko went on about how they don't know how many Red Lotus members are out there. Plus bryke also said in an interview after Book 3 was finished that Red Lotus would be showing up in some form. Which I guess just ended up being Zaheer, unless Zaheer leads a new elite Red Lotus squad out of nowhere and attempts to assassinate Kuvira in the finale.

I kept thinking this season would be a political plot, and it would break out with Kuvira's dictatorship going to war with Red Lotus. So you have two competing sides, and just the entire place in a mess.

But nope. They instead focused 100% on Kuvira, no political plot or depth to the plot. And they didn't even really do much with Kuvira. Truly strange stuff. I would have been 100% okay with Kuvira being the main focus, if they just had went all the way with her.

To be honest, there are a lot of loose ends like other members mentioned in the series. Like what happened to all the Equalists throughout Republic City? No way they managed to identify and capture every member of a group that large and powerful. What exactly did Jinora do in the season 2 finale? The writers even made fun of it in that recap episode yet they never exactly addressed how it was done. There are so many loose ends in this series as well as the fact that we've seen so little of the Avatar World in this time like the Fire Nation.

Yeah, they have always said that each season would be self contained. But the Red Lotus stuff was worse just because it was a clear set up. The Equalist movement was silly, because it was pretty big. And this idea that, like...all their issues would just disappear was insane. You don't go from a movement amassing enough support that it's able to take over the entire city....and then as soon as the leader falls, suddenly all the issues go away.

So yeah, that will always be problematic. But Red Lotus was like a direct set up at the very end.

Season 4 has made me actively dislike the Beifongs.

  1. Toph is a terrible parent who was forgiven because of her ever necessary rescue and half-assed apology.
  2. Suyin never apologized for Lin's scar.
  3. Suyin didn't dip into politics and essentially caused the Kuvira problem because she wanted to remain neutral.
  4. Suyin's prodigy family:
    • Twin model children
    • An Airbender
    • Super genius non-bender
    • Skrillex
Granted you can't really blame Suyin for the Kuvira problem, but I will because she's been shown to be a horrible person. I just don't like how the show gave seemingly everything and the kitchen sink to this family it's all just too convenient.

The writers siding with Su and Toph over the family issues, was really annoying. It was kind of like, Toph..get over it. While yeah, Toph should not have allowed the past to poison her and make her bitter, she absolutely should not have to let go and forget about it. What a crock of shit.

I hate how like Su and Toph never really took responsibility. Like yes, we did fuckin awful things. Instead it's always like "it was just the past". "It meant nothing". I love how like Su basically turned her life around, and has this wonderful life. All while her actions caused Lin so much pain, and caused her life to be so miserable. But..."I was just young then. It's all on your for this drama".

hah. fuck that.

So not only do they not take responsibility. Not only do they not actually feel bad or guilty for the shit they pulled. They even find a way to turn this around on Lin and make it as if, she's to blame for all of this. Like wow. Just fuckin Wow. I always knew Toph was kind of a piece of shit. But that kind of just took the cake.

But it just bugged me how like their arc wrapped up quickly, and they pretty much landed on the fact that, Lin was in the wrong. And her making up with them pretty much solved all their issues. Nope. I def agree, this made the Beifongs look really bad. I did like Toph as fan service. They used her pretty damn well, and nailed her ATLA vibe. But her actions as Police Chief, as a parent, and just everything else made me really hate her.

You know. Outside of S2 and the ending of S1, I can pinpoint my biggest issue with Korra as introduction of unnecessary characters that cut away the screen time and development of already established characters.

Kai is the biggest culprit.

If anything I feel like Lin got thrown under the bus so hard after season one. In season two she makes some very questionable choices regarding her police force and Mako. In season 3 as you mentioned no one ever apologizes to her AND she gets her ass beat by Su who has this great life as well. In season 4 there's the Toph stuff.

It's kind of strange. They utterly failed at managing their characters because they kept adding too many lol.

I'll say it again. Bryke likes to rail on the fact that THEY pushed for the 13 episode format. That they even wanted ATLA to be that format. So they push for this format, and then they continue to write like it's 22 episodes.

No excuse. Just keep adding more and more characters. More and more plot. Yeah keep piling it on guys. Fuckin a.

If anything I feel like Lin got thrown under the bus so hard after season one. In season two she makes some very questionable choices regarding her police force and Mako. I just hated how like, the writers clearly were siding with the Toph and Su. Like it wasn't left ambiguous, or kind of like..it was everyone's fault. As of right now, it was 100% Lin's fault. And while yes, it's true that Toph and Su made up and Lin is the one continuing the rift in the family, it's more complicated then that. Its because the other family members won't take responsibility for the abuse they made Lin suffer. They wanted to act like it never happened. And then they turn around and put it on Lin for not just letting the past be the past.

Apart of letting go of the past, is getting that closure. So when people think they should be forgive, they really have to earn that forgiveness. It's not something you just get, because time goes by. So the writers siding with them really fuckin bugged me. I found it kind of insulting.

So bizarre too, when they had that episode with Katara NOT forgiving her Mother's killer. Nostalgia Critic brought that up, how like it's rare for a kids show (or any show for that matter), to end with the person not forgiving the person that wronged them. It was really powerful. But in Book 3, they just shit all over that. And its' like put on Lin to forgive. And her not forgiving makes her a shitty person. But again, in order to forgive, it requires the other party to deserve forgiveness and step up and make things right.

You know, it kind of occurs to me that this show really covered the gamut of 'product of the industrial revolution political ideologies' pretty well. Populist Amon, anarchist Zaheer, republican Reiko, exhiled heir to demolished monarchy Wu, Fascist and cult of personality Kuvira. Really all that's missing is something outright communistic/soviet.

Of course, that's just one of the myriad ways this show is an unfocused mess, but it's also kind of interesting.

Not much to say except I agree. It was grating to see how Lin was treated and how the writers just grazed over it as a non-issue even when going out of their way to dedicate episodes and arcs to it. Toph was handled well with her interactions with Korra, but the whole family rift aspect and all the blame being piled on the person who got the short end of the stick was just so crooked.
