whoop, something went totally wrong I guess

for a moment I didn't know which Shulk was mine xD
yo TWILT as always good games, sorry about the laggy matches, good thing it got better at the end, a lot of fun stuff happened lol

Woah. That's way too much time for 2-stock.

Sounds good, mind my suckiness!
If everyone in the ranbats wants it toned down to 6 minutes, I'm fine with that. Like I said, I'm open to suggestions.

Clearing classic at 7.0 with everyone honestly isn't that bad, though I can see why you wouldn't want to as it can be time consuming. I'm about 10 fighters away from making it and I haven't really had trouble making it through with anyone.

Fuck clearing All-Star on hard with everyone though, the difference in difficulty between Classic 7.0 and All-Star on hard is huge
My big thing is that I cleared classic on 7.0 with everyone on the 3DS version, and I just don't have the motivation to do it all again.

I only have 10 challenges left, no hammers used yet. Yeehaw

Clear Classic at intensity 9.0 without losing a single life.
Clear Solo Classic in 12 minutes on intensity 9.0 with Marth.
Collect all custom moves.
Collect all Mii headgear.
Clear All-Star on Hard with all characters.
Destroy a total of 50,000 or more blocks in Trophy Rush.
Collect over 300,000G
Clear Crazy Orders after 20 or more turns while playing as Mario.
Clear Classic at intensity 9.0 without any customizations.
Clear Classic at intensity 7.0 or higher with all characters.

I plan on hammering "Clear All-Star on Hard with all characters" and "Clear Classic at intensity 7.0 or higher with all characters" once I've completed a few more challenges.

Yeeaaah, sorry, for whatever reason the connection to my Wii U died and I had to restart it.

GGs as usual! Fun matches indeed; Shulk dittos when they both have the same art on got really confusing lol.

Classic 9.0 without losing a life is fucking ridiculous. It's like a goddamn dice roll to see if the good items spawn near you or near your opponent. Half my runs are ended by the dragoon which 75% of the time spawns near the AI and NEVER gets knocked out of them, while any hit will knock it out of you. The other half are ended by the 8 player smashes which should just be called 7v1's cause they all target you and only hit each other accidentally when trying to kill you. And the one run when I got to miis I ended up killing myself by going too low when camping the ledge of battlefield. :(

Alright GAF, I asked if people were interested in this before, and I saw ~10 people say they were. To me, that's enough for us to try and see if this works. I have never done something like this before, so bear with me as I try to figure out proper organization, and know that I welcome suggestions.

All skill levels are welcome!

EXPECTATIONS:
-You will play a FT5 once per week with someone on the ranbat list, minimum.
-You will be respectful toward others, and understand that this is intended for fun.
-1v1.
-No items/customs.
-2 stock with an 8-minute timer.
-No stages with hazards.
-Good sportsmanship.

Fair warning: the Google Form asks for your e-mail. The only reason I am asking for this information is to give you a Google Spreadsheet invite for recording match data. I am a public school teacher with access to thousands of addresses, phone numbers, and e-mails, and I previously managed a 70,000 person legislative district with all the personal information I could ever want at the tip of my fingers, including SSNs. If you are too paranoid to trust me, I understand and respect that, but this is the only option that ensures only tournament players can edit results without placing heavy record-keeping burdens on me.

Let me know if you think I forgot anything, or if I screwed up the Google Form.

Without further ado, quote this post to reveal the Google Form link below:

When does this start? Also, any reason you're using a Google form instead of Challonge?

Hahaha yeah man and thanks for taunting! Makes me less stressed! Of course your Diddy skill prepares me for the future. Thought for sure I had you on that last one though! later!

Pivot grabbing: I couldn't do it to save my life because my tourney winning brother can't teach for crap. Oricwindser helped me figure it out. During a dash press GRAB then turn in the opposite direction. Not at the same time. It makes your range longer. Pressing a button and turning at the same time can result in a pivot tilt or a pivot smash. I can do it but not good enough to include it into my natural game. What I like to do is attempt it on people that I may out play for the most part so I can actually think about it. And I constantly do it while in the waiting room.

ROB is actually one of my worst match ups. That blasted spinning top can be used in such awful ways. Figure out spacing and you will get me really good. Some of his moves have clear start up and so you have to watch out for that. I went to the ROB boards on smash boards for help against him and they told me his weakness and thats what helped me in my fight against you.

Wonderful! Thank you so much.

Your Bowser J.R. is so cool to watch (and get destroyed by).

Can people sign up via Challonge? I've never done this before; Google stuff is just what I'm familiar with.

Can you do RR in a Challonge?

I plan on starting everything after giving everyone 1 week to sign up.

Alright, so in about a week.

And yeah, you can do round robins via Challonge. I've handled a league like that myself, before. It might be easier for it to be organized that way instead of Google docs, but I'm not familiar with the Google stuff as much as I am with Challonge. Challonge would let you set it all up for FT5s, with select players being able to sign up, and they'd be able to input the results themselves. It's all automated, so it probably would be less of a hands-on approach.

What is ranbat and FT5?

Ranbat stands for "random battle." I think it's pretty much what it stands for: people set up to face each other in a bracket in randomly established match-ups.

FT5 stands for "first to 5." Meaning that the winner of the match-ups in these ranbats would be the first to reach 5 wins.

Thanks for the tips, guys. Can individual players enter their own results in Challonge? I might migrate us to that system if I can figure it out.

What is ranbat and FT5?
Sorry, I'm being presumptuous in my wording:

Ranbats are basically defined as a local "league" of players. It's kind of like a tournament, but more casual and relaxed in its setting. Everyone plays on a set weekly basis, and players accumulate points to "win" the season. There are no rewards here; it's just a way to keep folks playing and meeting new people, and it adds a level of discussion for the community.

FT5 = First To 5 wins. So if we are doing 2-stock, 8 minute matches, you could potentially have 9 matches until the set is over. You could also only have 5 matches before the set is over. Whoever gets 5 wins first wins between you and your opponent.

I will edit my post to help folks understand what I'm talking about.

Glad to see I'm not the only one whose For Glory record is steadily dropping, lol. Honestly, though, I've noticed a huge gap between the people who play For Glory in Japan vs those who play online in the US. I feel like the truly "hardcore" people are the only ones who go online in Japan, whereas I've fought a much wider range of players from overseas. The travails of Smash 4 as an expat...

The Wii Shop Channel remix is amazing, how dare they hide it in a stage we can't play yet!

-No stages with hazards.
Any specifics for this? Might want to just write what's legal/counterpick and what not. I mean, Halberd has hazards, but it's a counterpick in Brawl IIRC.

Also awww, no custom moves at least? I understand Equipment, but custom moves are fun (and afaik, none of them are that bad in terms of balance).

Signed up btw.

Yes. It's just a checkbox when you're establishing the tournament that basically says "can participants input their own results, (y/n)." There are a variety of options when creating a tournament with that site. Participants just need to create a Challonge account, and then you can set the round robin so that players with Challonge accounts can input the results themselves.

I don't think that custom moves are well-balanced, especially for projectile characters. DHD, WFT, Mario, and Lucario all get some crazy good projectile customs that mess with the game's balance. As a Bowser main, some of these customs take my matchups from "I can do this with a lot of patience" to "no chance at all unless my opponent screws up". If everyone wants customs, I can change the rules, but my inclination is to leave them out.

Halberd is legal; its only stage hazard rarely comes into play, and most tournaments allow it. If you want to draft up a stage list, you're welcome to. I almost always pick FG versions of stages, so, embarrassingly, I don't really know which stages are viable in general. :-/

You are most welcome!

Also, my FG record has been dropping a bit lately as well. I went from 85% win rate to 82% over the last two weeks. Maybe I'm just losing my edge...

I will take a look at it, then. It's finals week, and I'm a teacher, so I have some time on my hands. ;-)

custom moves are not broken, you just need to learn how to deal against them

Question regarding Challonge, since I'm tinkering with it right now:
Is there a way to format a tournament so anyone can play anyone in a given round? Since a lot of us have busy lives, I wanted to let anyone play anyone in their bracket each week, instead of assigning a particular opponent. The RR component would still be in play, but you wouldn't be trapped by anyone's particular schedule in a given week. This works fine with Google Spreadsheets, but could that work with Challonge?

Ok.

1 more challenge left to go (50,000 blocks) before I'm done w/ all 140 challenges.

Used hammers on the following;

- "Collect all customs" because that comes down to luck
- "Collect all headgear" because ditto
- "Perfect every Target Blast stage" because I don't feel like it
- "KO Rival 4 times in Rival Smash" because I hate that mode
- and "All-Star hard w/ every character" because I don't have the patience to do so.

7.0 Classic w/ every character is easy, All-Star hard? Not so much.

Once I found the proper character for 4 KOs in rival smash, it wasn't hard. Who was it? I...don't remember. Someone with a good utilt, and I basically followed the AI around and utilted while they were on the platform above me every time.

I am hoping to find a good Youtube video of the Target Blast perfects. I got one of them, but the third stage seems impossible.

I only got a perfect on Stage 1 of Target Blast w/ Bowser Jr., and that wasn't even on purpose.

I didn't want to deal w/ Rival Smash because there is nothing more annoying than get smashed by multiple opponents at once, and then you add a rival to it? Nope.

I could definitely do it, but I knew it would take me awhile.

Such a shame we'll never get to see it in HD. All that can be done now is weep for all that is lost, and dream of the possibilities that will never come to pass.

Start by playing 1v1's without items.

I'd also suggest they should start off mostly with omega stages - for someone finding the game too chaotic, having to deal with stage hazards can only impede their progress.

Go beat up some Australians. They're soft and defenseless.
Not that you can really make that decision yourself, seeing how basic the anonymous online settings are...

I got the 4 KOs in Rival Smash with DK in the process of getting the score of 85 challenge. I made it to 85 more KOs than the rival DK and realized that I had already KO'd him three times and just kept going. I don't really remember what my strategy was other than using the ground pound a lot.

I got perfect in Stage 3 of target blast simultaneously with the 300,000 score with Pac-Man challenge. I happened to hit the big bomb directly into the center of the stage and when it exploded it took out pretty much the entire stage. The only thing left that wasn't destroyed was a single green target

I've spent around 80000G on trying classic 9.0 without losing a life and I haven't even got to Master Core once. Fuck this challenge. I'm pretty sure the CPU's have their attack power doubled in rounds 4 and 5 cause I keep getting killed at <40% at the center of the stage by uncharged smash attacks.

I recommend stopping for now, and practice by going through 9.0 w/ your mains.

Get used to it before you take it on.

Also, heads up, the Master Core attacks very quickly. The Master Beast alone barely takes a break in his attack cycle.

Are you using equipment?

No. I didn't even know you could use equipment for challenges.

But what kind of equipment would you recommend? Focus on attack or defense?

Oh I've fought Master Core plenty before. I've already beat it on 9.0 with all my best characters (minus Shulk) but doing it all without losing a single life is another beast entirely.

Oh, well...

Magnet Man and I used Ganondorf and gave him a tremendous boost in defense, and also added the KO Healer Badge.

I also added a Vampire Badge just for added protection.

I've beaten the game on 9.0 multiple times, and while I always lose one life at some point (DAMN ITEMS), I have the most success with this setup:
1) High defense character.
2) High defense equipment.
3) Healing equipment (preferably with defense!).

Healing equipment involves all of the following for me, based on the character:
-Heal whenever you hit someone (Vampire Braces)
-Heal whenever you shield something
-Heal a set % every few seconds.

If you stack a lot of healing, you'll find yourself beating all of the Master forms while still at 0% if you are patient.

The big thing to watch out for with defense is that is also makes your character slower and heavier, since it reduces speed. This means some characters play very differently. Bowser, for example, can no longer autocancel his aerials during hops. You have to play him 100% grounded.

Can someone explain what just happened?

I just cleared classic on 9.0 without losing a single life but the challenge didnt unlock.. Does this challenge allow you to use the heart piece before master fortress?

Yea, I even had a friend watch me do it. Luckily, I was able to do it again right after the first one didn't register.
I'm gonna guess you died in one of the earlier matches and it didn't register with you that you had to start over.

I'm so fucking bad at this game. My timing sucks, my combos suck, my movement sucks, I just goddamn suck at this game. It really frustrates me :/

I wish in training I could train one thing at a time. Like targets or something would pop up at certain places so I can practice that way. Its like I totally lost my reflexes or something :/
It would be nice if Smash4 had Break the Targets like Melee. Did you play that? Sounds like it would be up your alley.

Is Samus a good character to start with? I'd like to use her because she's the one I always picked on N64. Nostalgia and all that.
I have this idea that her moves lack KO potential. Apparently some people hang out on the edge and use her grapple beam to back throw, but that's kind of cheap. I've avoided playing as her because movement is too slow and no KO moves.

Okay, those swords are lethal if put in a bad position lol.

GG Vena. Not too shabby with Ike. You don't leave yourself to open to punishment very much. Could use some more up tilts though.

I could use a lot of things but for now its mostly more practice! I have a hide of steel when it comes to losing until perfection. I am just so stuck trying to play as if this were melee that its bad, lol. I learned melee the same way, a lot of bloodied defeats. :P

Actually, that how you learn how to fight in any fighting game not just melee. It's good you got balls of steel because some people just don't take defeat very well. Keep at it, you almost made a comeback one time with Ike against my Peach.

I actually know how to play Ike... as you may have noticed by my fumbling with everyone else! :P

I'm mostly for it because it gives certain characters tools to deal with certain match ups (Ike in particular is a lot better with customs IMO), but if no one else is for it, I don't mind too much.

As for a quick draft of a legal stage list, I'd recommend something like:

Starter:
Final Destination/Omega Stages (Though regular FD has the light that can get distracting…)
Battlefield
Smashville
Town and City
Lylat Cruise

Counterpick:
Skyloft
Castle Siege
Halberd
Delfino
Duck Hunt
KJ64 (Might be too big for 1v1s?)

There might be a stage or two up for consideration, but that's what I got so far. If anyone thinks a stage should be added or removed, let me know and we can talk, though I'm heading to sleep soon.
