Anyone have tips for getting better with Sheik?

I feel like his range is very small, but also only a couple moves provide reliable KO's. I've lost multiple matches because I've gotten the opponent quickly to ~100% but then I fail to KO them.

Also, how on earth do I determine which way the down+B jumps? The direction I'm facing doesn't seem to matter at all.
I find the down B usually goes in which ever direction I've been holding recently. So if I'm trying to turn it around, I do this kind of delayed quarter circle thing. I'm not sure exactly what the mechanics are there.

Finishing the kill is definitely Sheik's weak point. Rather than any particular setup, the main thing is probably to stay in the right frame of mind. Patient. Don't rush it, and go into the match knowing you might need to get them to 160ish while they kill you at 110 or whatever. Even when they're at kill percent, hang back and throw needles when you can. Get grabs, but don't try to pretend there's a real follow up; wait for them to get further down, closer to you.

As mentioned, bouncing fish is good for kills. Especially since you can often find it near the boundaries; as they come back, it's fairly safe to try and call their jump with down B. If they air dodge/fast fall/otherwise get out of the way, you'll be just past them, and in a decent position to threaten jumping back and doing bair/uair.

Another option for kills is up B. It's a really strong tool. In the above scenario (missed bouncing fish off stage), you need to up B to recover anyway. Try to position it so the first poof is where they'll be. If it catches them, good chance it will end it. And if that misses, the last hitbox+windbox usually keep you safe. It's also good for situations where they're above you, expecting to air dodge your uair. Instead use the up B, and the delay on it can cause to react to early and get hit. Also works sometimes on the ground if you can disappear as they do something laggy. At that point it's kind of a silly gimmick, but the point is up B is another killing option.

Uair of course will kill eventually. Bair will too, if you hit the sweetspot towards the beginning. Run off the edge into fair is also get, since they already will be closer to the blast zones.
"Use bombs wisely"

No, i'm serious. It amazes me how many sheik players just completely ignore their tilt special. As for Down B, save it for kills. Its hard enough to kill with sheik, don't make one of your few kill moves stale.
Grenade is pretty good, but you have to be really careful with it. Often your opponent will be able to run right past it and punish you before you're out of lag. If you hit them with the initial grenade toss, it's usually safe to run in and grab while they block the explosion. Worst case scenario I guess they roll out.

Probably the best use I've found is throwing it out while they try to recover. If you can get it to the right spot, it can make it tough for them to come back safely. In case anyone that reads my rambling hasn't noticed yet, you can hold in B to make the grenade fall longer before you pull the pin. Between that and jumping to position it in the air, you have pretty solid control of where to put it. I'm not sure that going this route beats the opportunity costs (in most situations) of not going for needles, or chasing with bouncing fish, or going for off stage fair/bair though. Like any of the edge guard options, you're kinda gambling on where they'll go. But The grenade seems like they have more time to respond maybe, I'm not sure.

Miscellaneous grenade thing: you can throw it (towards the stage or away) while you're just above the stage, and then grab the edge to get rid of some of the lag. It feels faster, but I'm not sure if it is by the time you're off the edge.

signed up for the Ranbat yesterday, seems like it'll be fun! thou I am still thinking which character should I use, debating myself between Link & Marth, mostly because I haven't seen Marth much around here in GAF, I think character diversity would make it more awesome :'D

I think I burned myself out with smash 3ds. I haven't played the wii u version much at all. Only unlocked Falco and Dark Pit. Haven't even gone for Lucina :[

Is Jigglypuff anything more than a gimmick character?

Her up and down special both are hard to land and risky to use since they cause you to stun yourself. Side special is some very basic short range punch, and open special is a marginally useful sonic spin.

What am I not getting?

I signed up for this, sounds fun! I'm not as good as most of smashGAF but I'll see how it goes. Can't wait to fart on your faces with Wario.
No worries on skill level. If we get enough people, I'll create a High, Mid, and Low skill bracket so folks are playing people roughly on their level each season.

Is there a website for this or something?

Anyways, I'm down

Look up Hungrybox.

for me it has been the other way around, haven't touch the 3DS version since the Wii U came out, once you get Lucina everything will be alright~

Stay in the air.

Her range is short, but she's extremely fast and maneuverable in the air, with some of the best aerials to boot. Her neutral and up special are useless, but side special is great for shield pressure and large opponents, and her down special, while situational, is only second to Wario's down special as the best kill move in the game. Knowing when to transition to the ground and use her ground moves is key. Her tilts are actually good, up tilt being her best killing move on the ground.

Hey. Do you guys remember when Gamecube Controller adapters were being sold online only at Gamestop for like an hour one day? I managed to order one back then and it said they'd be shipped Dec 15th. Has anyone who managed to get one's order shipped out yet, because mine hasn't.

It'd be interesting to see what modifiers are placed on things like the final event match on hard mode, I'd be intrigued to know the science behind the CPU's crazy bullshit, for instance I swear Mega Man's up smash has extra range/suction power.

Yeah, I might have to. Gonna play MK8 instead. Still need to unlock Rosalina there :(

I swear on Lucina's red striped panties that I haven't unlocked her for the wii u version yet

And it kills me every time knowing this D:

I might have played a little too much of the 3ds version lol

Hey Karsticles, can we sign up at anytime for this or is this the only sign up period? I feel like I need more work on my Toon Link before I can bring much to the table.

Hey, I've added myself to the google doc. If anyone in the EU region wants to fight me, please add me. NNID: PiccoroDaimaoh
I've been playing Smash non stop since I got it, my backlog be damned!

cool, thanks, I'll definitely try some more. I keep distracting myself with her specials, I guess I never thought about what her real advantages are.

Aerial wall of pain and instead of shielding you can crouch to dodge most attacks. Kinda stupid really.

Thanks for setting up a gaf league Karsticles, I'm signing up to get some regular practice.

Btw, how are the matches between EU and the US usually? No problems with lag?

Frustrates me to no end when I'm playing online 1v1 and I'm actually trying to get better, and when I lose a couple of times the opponent changes to some bullshit joke character instead of what he's good with. And the fucking taunt-spam..

I need to make a profile called "USE MAIN" to get the message to them in For Glory.. :/

I really have issues with hitting my attacks, always feels it's a couple of inches off target. I dont know if that's the 600-1000 hours of Melee I've played or what but nothing I do connects and opponents connect everything and I feel like an idiot.

Maybe I need to just sink more hours into this game, but would be awesome if I had someone on the couch next to me telling me what I'm doing wrong. I don't like the silent online play.

In FG on the Character Select you can input new names whenever you want.

For me it depends on the opponent. I've had matches with zero lag against some US players, while against others the lag was terrible. I usually don't have any lag playing against EU people though, so I'm very satisfied with the netcode overall.

My tournament went well.

No real performance issues with 8 players at once. The game handled it fine. However it's incredibly hectic and just all over the place, as some folks warned. Ended up cutting down to 4 players anyway, where it's still quite crazy to be fair.

In general, my first impressions of Smash for Wii U are that it seems a lot more difficult than I remember. I don't remember having such trouble keeping up with things with Melee. I must be getting old, even though I'm not very old. I can see it's going to take some real time getting used to. Not as pick up and play as I remember since it's quite overwhelming initially.

Kids had a lot of fun though, so happy with using it this year.

We have 16 people signed up so far - fantastic!

I will end the sign-up period this weekend. I recommend you join regardless of how skillful you are. I plan on playing different characters quite often throughout the ranbat. It's all in good fun. :-)

Does being disrespectful include Ganoncides off the ledge?
Winning is never disrespectful! I mostly mean getting pissy on the forums and teabagging. Those go over the line for me.

Depends on your EU connection.

What about taunting? I've had a few people taunt me after they KO me, then when I KO them and taunt they then just SD. And I've heard people get annoyed at being taunted after being KO'd.

Generally I never taunt unless the opponent taunts first.

Then again usually the players who taunt are the ones who end up two-stocking me :I

No problem!

Thanks for the ass kicking, I'm happy enough that I got pretty even in that one Sheik vs R.O.B match..

Wow, it felt like I was 2 seconds behind what you were doing, all the time. :D

GGs, I hope I could get rid of the wasteful moves that I'm doing constantly. Also, I really have problems with finishing the KO's. My KO moves never connect :/

Yeah Sheik can be hard to control, and I was sweating on that Rob match!

It's just practice, you'll get it

Just curious, what controller are you using?

I'm still stuck with the WiiU Gamepad, and I feel like the analog stick is far worse than a Gamecube stick. I keep doing side+b instead of down+b and overall it just feels more inaccurate.

Might also be just me imagining things but it feels like it returns to the neutral position quite slowly.

Taunting is fine. It is specifically built into the game for that purpose.

I think teabagging takes it too far, because you are basically saying "I am raping your face with my balls". It is a disgusting phenomenon.

It might be built into the game but I think it's still pretty rude if you're clearly winning more and you keep taunting after every KO.

my main issue with the gamepad is that i'm scared of ruining the analog stick so i don't play as aggressive or intricately as i'd like to and i want a c-stick :(

signed up for the league! couple of questions though - are there any specific rules for characters and stages? e.g. does the winner have to stay the same character and is it just a vote system for the stage?

You mean the in-game taunts that you do by pressing the d-pad? Lol come on, that's just for fun. If someone is actually annoyed by that then that's just ridiculous.
