What's the absolute worst game of 2014 you played?

Not including forgettable tablet games, the games I've played this year were:

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel Retail
Dark Souls II
Mercenary Kings
Risk of Rain
Metro Last Light

And my pick is Mercenary Kings. Not worth the price at all. All the guns are completely pointless except for one type and it just wasn't fun at all after the initial 'figure it out' period ended (which was like an hour).

Metro Last Light is close though. It's not bad, but it has some really annoying design flaws and the fact that you can bork your save thanks to unwanted auto checkpointing is fucking stupid.

Can't remember any bad games...OK...I played Godus for an hour or two and it was totally boring, but I just wanted to see myself.

Shadow of Mordor is a basic-ass, Ubisoft-inspired open world game with a terrible story, terrible mission design, flat world with nothing interesting to see in it (Oh, look, another Orc stronghold!), ripped-off Batman combat that becomes trivial with a few important and easy to get upgrades, and one of the worst endings in modern gaming.

The Nemesis system was neat, until your character becomes so powerful that you just don't die anymore. Then you wonder what the hell you're doing with your life.

This is sadly more true than the overhype this game gets, but I still enjoy it.

Starlight Inception. It was a Kickstarter space sim that promised PC, PS3 and Vita versions--why not, right? And to its credit, it actually released and got some support from the devs.

Unfortunately, so many things seem poorly thought out or just busted that it's hard to recommend to anyone. Everything from the story presentation to the flight model to the half-busted joystick support to the poor mission design to the overuse of military jargon for "authenticity" to the substandard graphics screams failed ambition, which is a shame because clearly the devs put their hearts into the game. It just doesn't work very well and is a struggle to enjoy.

Postal 2

I remember really liking the original Postal when I was younger and I have always wanted to play Postal 2. I did and it was not good. The AI, the graphics, the story, and the objectives were all terrible.

Probably Need for Speed Rivals. The game could have been great but everytime I play it and get pulled over or crash out and have to load back to the garage and then load back out to the map and it takes forever it reminds me why I hate it, and that's the reason! Also that and it would randomly disconnect you and reset you while in the middle of doing some online race.

I haven't been able to finish the second (or third?) tutorial race because whoever the game has designated as host always seems to leave and that even boots me from my singleplayer race to assign a new host, which is annoying as hell.

I've had that happen four times. I understand that it's an EA Access freebie for me, but the fucking thing is unplayable.

I got 15 solid hours of Orc head-cutting action out of it, but the game is what it is. A cheap thrill without a lot of substance.

I don't think the game is bad, I just think it gets a bit more credit than it deserves.

Sinatar

Official GAF Bottom Feeder
Thief.

Shitty level design, shitty gameplay, buggy as fuck and a genuinely abysmal plotline.

Trash top to bottom.

Wolfenstein: The New Order was such a major disappointment for me that I'd say it falls under this.

The people calling it old school have no idea what an old school shooter is. It's closer to CoD than the likes of Doom or Quake and is just boring. Doesn't help that the sound mixing is atrocious and the enemies are massive bullet sponges.

My personal worst 2014 game starts with a D and ends with a Y.

I won't beat a dead horse, but seriously. My biggest gaming regret this year.

OT: I guess the MCC.

This is essentially how I feel, except that I really didn't see the negative consequences associated with the Nemesis system. I died two or three times, once from a glitch and the other because I mistakenly thought I'd paused the game when I went for a piss. The combat never made me feel like I was in danger, except for the moments in which I became bored enough that I'd decide to run into a stronghold loaded with captains. But even then, you can simply run and find a bush to hide in. That, combined with the tiny, uninteresting map and beta-level glitches I encountered hampered my enjoyment of a game that had a lot of potential.

Edit: I find it odd how many people are willing to describe perfectly competent games as garbage simply because they didn't like them. Superman 64 was garbage, most games are not.

Tomodachi Life. There are some fun moments, but once you've experienced everything, which doesn't take long, it's just ... meh. Animal Crossing stays interesting because there's so much more to do, you're building and customizing an entire town, and the actual gameplay is more engaging than Tomodachi Life. It's not completely terrible, I mean it is kind of entertaining to see the random relationships and breakups that happen. It just gets old too fast. I'd put it on the same level as Nintendogs+cats; really fun for about a week.

Godus

A horse with a fake horn that they called a unicorn. And by horse I mean a F2P iOS title, and by unicorn I mean a $20 PC strategy title.

Definitely Watch_Dogs. Didn't pick up the other 'controversial' games of 2014 like Destiny, Unity, Titanfall, Master Chief Collection etc.

Dark Souls II although a damn good game was definitely my biggest letdown, it just doesn't touch the euphoric experience that is the best moments from Dark Souls. (can we use euphoric to describe things again yet?)

the last game worst game i played was the last of us on ps3

overrated garbage.

I guess amazing story, gameplay, and graphics aren't for everybody.

I really don't play bad games. I guess my least favorite was pixeljunk on PS4. Luckily was PS+, but just didn't do anything for me.

Monument Valley on iOS. Guess I got sucked up into the hype for this one, puzzles weren't that challenging and it just got boring after a short while. I can see the appeal of it but it just wasn't for me.

Halo: MCC - My most anticipated game, probably of all time, completely botched and still not working. I'll never play another Halo game after this.

Destiny - Game bored me to tears. I can't believe the people who made my all time favorite video game (Halo 2), made this boring mess.

Assassin's creed Unity. I don't know why i want to like this series so bad... its got everything that I think would make an awesome game (graphics, cool character, cool concept, most of all the time periods/locations) yet I find it such a chore to play. Its the 3rd one i've bought and i've hated them all. wtf is wrong with me?

dark souls 2

(not played a lot of game this year though)

Edit : I forgot I played Professor Layton X Ace Attorney, that means a lot.

Watch Dogs was the worst game I played this year. It just bored me to death after a few hours, I didn't care about the main character.

Maybe you should start adding "good gameplay" to your ideas of what makes an awesome game.

Then you will realize Assassin's Creed isn't for you, and move on to something you enjoy.

Alien: Isolation

Got stuck near the beginning because it wasn't obvious to me that you had to pull the panel up in one of the first rooms and descend into the floor. Then I hated the androids. Then I hated the actual alien. The game very much relies on moving slower than a keyboard's keys will allow. Basic collectibles are easily missable because they blend in with everything else in the environment.

The AI is just absolutely terrible, and the game's too unpredictable where it shouldn't be, and scripted where it shouldn't be to top the Amnesia games.

I'm measuring this based on the game I bought, but played the least.

Lords of the Fallen and Civilization: Beyond Earth are runner-ups.

Call of Duty on PS3. The constant stuttering and frame rate drops made the game unplayable. I really only enjoy CoD for the competitiveness, anyway.

Mercenary Kings by far. I'm a huge Contra guy so I figured that game looked great for a PS+ freebie. Now I just want those hours of my life back. Destiny and Watch Dogs seem like masterpieces compared to that piece of garbage.

I'm relishing at the Mordor dislike in this topic.

For me, it's also Mordor. Subjectively, it's my least favorite game that I played this year that was also released this year by far.

darkside31337

Tomodachi wa Mahou
Bravely Default.

2nd half of the game is complete garbage, 1st half is just really bad. Characters are dull, the art is pretty terrible, the "dungeons" are uninspired, the gameplay is nothing to write home about - its not challenging and its really simple to break the system. It's a thoroughly mediocre old school Final Fantasy game and I think I'm being generous. If this was the supposed to be the savior of JRPGs then the genre is better off dead.

Mercenary Kings was garbage, but I played it in 2013.

It's one of those games that looks like it should be perfect, but after you spend just a little bit of time with it, it's nothing but "Fuck this".
