With All The Remakes/Remasters/Def Edition That Are Coming Out, Last Gen...

Last gen drug on so long that all the 360/PS3 multiplats had PC versions that demanded higher quality art and engines. With X1 and PS4 being X86 it's a simple port away to produce these remasters. (Ignoring things like TLOU and MCC)

It would be a waste for these versions not to come out honestly.

It does strike me that a subtle consequence of remasters and "definitive editions" for the new platforms may be that many games will be saved from the possibly inevitable massacre that would happen when last gen consoles begin to suffer:

- digital stores being taken down
- DLC packages becoming unavailable
- patches going offline
- licenses expiring

The 7th console generation was a dangerous one for people who care about the medium as more than a form of disposable entertainment. Most publishers dove straight in to the world of DLC, piecemeal content parceled out as pre-order bonuses, and restrictive licensing without any consideration for how their products would age after just a few years on the market.

For example, Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3, a game with a community that wants the game to live, has already been permanently crippled for new players. 2 DLC characters are no longer sold, as well as less important but aesthetically popular costume packs vanishing. If a PS4 port with everything on one disc was released (not likely, due to the money involved, just an example), a significant game would be future proofed a while longer.

Very good point, and very good example. That whole Marvel situation got me to scrounge and get what I was told or what I knew would be considered disavowed and rare later, especially UMVC3 digital content.

I'm starting to look at Remasters as cross-generational GOTY editions essentially. I can definitely see the benefit from the platform and consumer side, but the future-proofing will be very important for those who want to keept these complete experiences around.
