That's because it was. Really there was no set up for it, they just made it happen. Hell there was more things going on between Korra and Mako during this finalie than the entire season between
Korra and Asami.

there were tons of forced shit in the ending
wu being a beastmaster
kuvira suddenly being all emotional and shit
the spirit portal appearing out of nowhere
mako having a big dramatic death but no
wu suddenly being really smart and having the earht kingdom split up

but

korrasami is the only forced shit i'm ok with because it means asami and korra get to be happy
i am really satisfied with the ending
