This (Link) is the first mention of December sales that I've seen thus far. We now have some actual numbers (Link) instead of just percentages. Updating the totals:

2008:

DS - 966k (LTD - 2,290,000)
WII - 875.6k (LTD - 1,551,000)
360 - 500k (LTD - 1,195,000)
PS3 - 430k (LTD - 740,000)
PSP - 297k (LTD - 933,000)
PS2 - 155k (LTD - 2,800,000) (I believe this is only from Oct/02 onwards)

The PSP and PS2 numbers for 2008 are still based upon the percentages given in the first article that I linked.

It should be noted that I am going by memory with respect to 360 sales for Dec/05. I lost the article, so I am going by memory. In any case, the 360 LTD should be within 10-15k. Also, I've noticed that the Canadian numbers get adjusted from time to time. Just for an example, NPD reported the 2007 DS sales to be 696,500 at the end of 2007, but then they were reported as 711,000 for the same period of time just about a month ago.

I should also point out that the Wii numbers for 2007 have been revised up to 591k. They were originally given as 567. And as mentioned earlier, the DS numbers for 2007 were revised up to 711k from 696.5k. The 2007 industry revenue figure was also revised up to $1.578 billion from $1.531 billion. I don't know if any other hardware numbers were adjusted, but it is definitely possible.

Finally, the PS2 LTD is based off of a LTD number provided by a representative from NPD in Nov/07. However, NPD Canada did not start tracking Canadian sales until the start of 2003, and at that time they went back and provided estimates for Q4 2002 (Oct - Dec). So I am pretty sure that these PS2 numbers would not include anything from before Oct/02. So Oct/00 - Sept/02 is probably missing from this data, which just using a rough estimate would probably add anywhere from 750k - 1M units to the total.

Also, the top 5 software titles for the year were Rock Band, GTA4, Mario Kart Wii and Wii Fit, and Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. However, this combines all SKUS, so it doesn't mean much. Hopefully, we'll get some sort of software chart broken down by individual SKU.

Note: 2008 and LTD totals edited with revised 2008 numbers. For original 2008 numbers refer to Post #29.

LTDs:
Canada: 10.95% of US population
DS: 8.15% of US sales
Wii: 4.79% of US sales
360: 8.51% of US sales
PSP: 6.39% of US sales
PS3: 10.67% of US sales

Hey Nintendo. Ship more Wiis.

Man the PSP is doing horribly. I don't think I've seen a single person with a slim, just a few people with the original, all hacked to pirate games.

Fixed.

Actually, the PSP is the odd man out compared to the US, but it is not due to shipment problems. People just don't want them up here.

Sonyland, bitches.

I'm not sure how many systems are sold in Mexico/Central America, if any, so "North America" (Canadia + US):

DS: 29.79m
Wii: 19.03m
PSP: 15.26m
360: 15.04m
PS3: 7.52m

PS3 is exactly half of the 360.

...And then adding in Japanese numbers:

DS: 55.24m
PSP: 26.84m
Wii: 26.67m
360: 15.90m
PS3: 10.23m

Plus Europe:

DS: 88.23m (32.99m shipped numbers from September 08)
Wii: 40.67m (14m sold from that one article posted recently as of December 08)
PSP: 38.84m (12m sold numbers from May 08)
360: 23.90m (8m sold as of that same article with the Wii numbers from December 08)
PS3: 15.23m-17.23m (7m straight from my ass, though it was at 5m shipped back in May 08)

Surprised to find that the 360/PS3 ratio is smaller in Canada than it is in America.

The difference isn't all that much.
that is because the 360 initially did not match the exchange rate while the PS3 did.

in US dollars, the 360 were like 100US more in Canada while the PS3 was on par with the US prices.

things have changed though at the end of 2008, MS has finally started ajusting their prices of their SKUs

PS3 was 10% more in Canada at launch than the US MSRP.

Thanks a lot. According to several past reports on the net, DS did quite well in Korea as well, right ? This could be a worth-being-mentioned market.

Yeah, I think it achieved 1 million in South Korea aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaages ago. Of course there's Austrailia, and the rest of December in Europe for Wii (and whatever else).

All of the numbers are underestimates, but they're a good representation of how the market is dished out.

This would also mean that by those numbers and extrapolating for the rest of December, other regions, plus sales in January, Wii has outsold 360 and PS3 combined
most likely

holy shit, if this is true, Wii could very well have a >50% ww market share...

what stores does NPD track in Canada?
for example in metro vancouver (canada's 3rd largest metro) walmart has like 3 stores all of them way out in the middle of no where, and a fourth one being opened in the actual city. plus walmart has a stigma here, and from what I've noticed is not nearly as popular compared to its situation in the us marketplace. Futureshop/Bestbuy, Costco, Zellers, and ebgames make up the majority of sales, are any of these stores tracked by NPD Canada?

A reminder of what NPD said the YTD totals were for 2007 before any adjustments you mentioned.

2007

DS - 696,500
Wii - 567,000
360 - 385,200
PS2 - 324,000
PS3 -265,500
PSP - 253,000

Everything was up this year except for the PSP and PS2.

im also assuming theres alot more pstriples in canadaland. no really, joking aside, i definitely wouldn't be surprised if PS3 catches up with the 360 much sooner than you most of you think.

So DS is pretty close to crossing the 100M mark...

How does it catch up if it's selling less than the 360 every month?

The difference isn't all that much.

Isn't it actually MORE than the difference between the 360 and the Wii? I think THAT'S the bigger surprise considering the scenario everywhere else in the world.

dude said:

It's even closer than that. The DS was at 84.33 million at the end of September, and it just sold 3 million in the US in December alone. I think it's safe to assume that it has passed the 90 million mark.

We now have some actual numbers (Link) instead of just percentages. Updating the totals:

2008:

DS - 966k (LTD - 2,290,000)
WII - 838k (LTD - 1,513,000)
360 - 485k (LTD - 1,180,000)
PS3 - 422k (LTD - 732,000)
PSP - 297k (LTD - 933,000)
PS2 - 155k (LTD - 2,800,000) (I believe this is only from Oct/02 onwards)

The PSP and PS2 numbers for 2008 are still based upon the percentages given in the first article that I linked.

I should also point out that the Wii numbers for 2007 have been revised up to 591k. They were originally given as 567. I wish they'd release the Canadian NPD numbers along with the US numbers. June is going to be very interesting because the arcade has been dropped to $150 in Canada (sale lasts 6/19-6/25) presumably to clear stock and make way for the 512mb arcade SKU. It could also be a testing ground for MS to see how another price drop affects sales.

Yeah, it's pretty interesting to see the frenzy that is the Arcade bundle. Literally, all of them has disappeared overnight.

Bumping this thread reminded me that I should probably update the 2008 totals.

The 2008 totals seem to have been revised from the initial numbers released at the end of the year.

The revised figures are:

Wii - 875,600 (highest annual console system sales ever in Canada)
360 ~ 500,000
PS3 ~ 430,000

There were no mentions of revised handheld figures, but I suspect that they have been revised as well.

Anyway, using the revised figures, the updated LTDs at the end of 2008 are:

2008:

DS - 966k (LTD - 2,290,000)
WII - 875.6k (LTD - 1,551,000)
360 - 500k (LTD - 1,195,000)
PS3 - 430k (LTD - 740,000)
PSP - 297k (LTD - 933,000)
PS2 - 155k (LTD - 2,800,000) (I believe this is only from Oct/02 onwards)
