Halo 5: Guardians Beta Thread | Hot Red on Blue Action

and while I think the ground pound is quite useless its strangely satisfying getting a kill with it.

What I like about ground pound is that it also promotes vertical play. It really gives me more of a reason to assume higher ground.

It does not feel gimmicky at all.

BOOM!

Crouch jumping was removed? News to me.

I'm pretty sure crouch jumping is still in.
They had to remove it to make room for Ground pound. Terrible decision, especially considering its "substitute" is Clamber (LOL)

Also, Clamber is awesome.
Nah, if a player misses a jump, they should fall, period. Clamber is just a crutch for players who can't make jumps. They should remove Clamber and Ground Pound and bring back crouch jumping.

I know, but I was pretty sure I read that crouch jumping was still able to be done. Maybe I misread but I do remember there being talk of it being included.

Also, Clamber is awesome.

so apparently match making went a lot smoother if you quit back to title after each map... but for those of you that waited it out like i did, did you notice that the game constantly cycled between the two maps? if i just played on truth, next map would be empire 99% of the time. i played 6 hours and only had the maps repeat once or twice, no shit. is this a new addition to their matchmaking search algorithm?

Yeah I always had to back out after each match. I would only back out however if someone else quit out first. If someone else leaves, it'll just keep searching and searching. If somehow everyone stays in the match, obviously there is no wait.

I really hope this issue is fixed for the public beta.

Something I've always liked about Halo versus Battlefield or CoD, is that I mostly know what killed me, it's very rare where I find myself going "How the hell did that happen?". While this looks like all kinds of fun, for those playing, does the increased mobility and abilities cause that kind of CoD-ish frustration of getting killed seemingly out of nowhere?

That's my only main concern from watching footage, maybe the people I've seen just aren't very good, but it does seem like the situational awareness of previous titles is more frantic and thus sometimes frustrating when you're killed.

How do you ground pound so fast? I always hold it for like 10 seconds before it does it for me.

So I'm wondering when 343 will unveil the "other" type of MP. I think its pretty obvious now we will have arena MP since they keep stressing that term and something completely new to the series. I remember from nktrnal's leaks that he said something to the point that Halo 5 MP will be on the scale of the Battlefield series.

When did he say this? You are getting me all excited.

a bit, but its more due to the instant you die the game switches to a kill cam, so sometimes you don't see the key moments post death like you used to. one of the (minor) issues i hope gets addressed.

Ill just say that the first 3 or 4 games I kind of had that feeling until I got a hang of the new mobility and got my teeth into the maps. Once I got comfortable with both, everything clicked into place.

It seems to do it pretty quickly or me. Takes a couple of seconds max to enable it. I might be wrong here but the longer you hold it the more damage it does? I've had instances where it hasn't killed anyone but depleted their shields instead.

In fact, I've tricked the system at certain points by ground pounding to a higher place (marked in red) by looking at the lower level and then quickly switching to the red bit.

Only got into 1 game last night after trying for 40 minutes. The game I did play my team got owned 50-3. Damn we were horrible. Lol

I don't know how it's possible, given the crouch button is tied to Ground Pound...

Is Ground Pound triggered even if you're looking up while jumping? Maybe that's the key.

IIRC Quinn from 343 said in a Podtacular interview (from when we got the first beta footage) that they intend to have crouch jumping in the game but they are still figuring out the controls. So I guess we will see ground pound moved to a diff button come release next year.

If Ground pound absolutely has to be in the game (I still think it would be better to just remove it, same as sprint and clamber) I think they could make it so you initiate the Ground pound by using the melee button while hovering. Or maybe by holding the melee button while in the air. I don't care how they do it, but crouch jumping has to be in the final game.

And yeah, I guess if Clamber was just there as a crutch for bad players, but still having crouch jump as the faster more skilled option, it could be fine. They should have to make the recover animation for using Clamber much longer though, and of course every Clamber jump should have to be doable with crouch jump. Guess it could work.

Oh yeah, I'll take clamber any day over crouch jump. Lol no contest.

One more thing, I just hope that hover and evade have finally put to rest bunny hopping. So annoying people jumping around.
LOL. Thanks for proving my point.

After playing the beta this weekend, I'm more eager to get back into that and play, then play any of the games in the MCC online. Really enjoyed my time with it, with a few tweaks, it has the chance to be great.

This so much. For compensation for the MCC debacle, I'll gladly take the full beta being left on-line until launch. I really do think that this a few minor tweaks from greatness. Although it already is fucking awesome.

@RdN choosing the datacenter should be standard for dedicated server games. I smh head when forum members and gamers know what's needed, yet devs think that they know best. I got placed a few times on the US servers and it was nasty. This should not be happening.

My impressions of the Early Access Beta (played about 4,5 hours)

Things I didn't like:
  • The radius of the nade explosions is too big, duels often start or end with nadespam
  • The AR is too strong compared to how easy it is to handle. Especially in ADS the range is too high. The SMG as a pickup weapon is fine.

Agreed. Nades are way too powerful.

Yea, darn those people for trying to get you to miss a headshot on them

Would be nice if we could play it until spring.

Those're good ideas.

Speaking of hovering, can it be initiated without scoping during a jump? That's the only way I've heard of or seen it triggered thus far.

Just found out Walshy's from Grand Rapids. That's my hometown.

Been hearing about this guy for years, had no idea.

Now I'm really curious about the "other side" of MP, which I'm guessing will be the evolution of BTB.

I've never been a fan of BTB honestly, but I have the feeling 343 is gonna go big with it. IDK if Battlefield levels of big, but definetly bigger than 8v8. We'll see.

Ledge grab replaces the crouch jump anyway when it comes to getting to ledges slightly too high to get up. So the loss of crouch jump is no biggie for me.
Clamber is a poor man's crouch jump. You can't do it in all directions, and requires way less skill to perform it (the margin of error is way too big) But as I said, having both could work. Clamber would be the easier, slower, more limited option, while crouch jumping would be the optimal way.

Crouch jumping has been an integral part of map navigation and control, something that is practiced and honed. Many are worried that clambering will oversimplify this aspect of it.

As long as a fine balance is struck between them, I won't mind it so much.

Is the ledge grab just as difficult to perform as the crouch jump or is it automatic like titanfall?
You have to press the jump button at an appropriate time, if I remember correctly. It's not automatic.

... And nothing like crouch jumping. :p

I purchased Titanfall a few weeks back, haven't played it yet. Should make some time to try it out today.

Somewhere in the middle. Not difficult to perform or requiring a lot of skill, but it does require you to push or hold the jump button to initiate the clamber. I thought it was fine and puts the emphasis on thruster movement over crouch bunny hopping, so all good.

Well, I could see it being 32 players total. Halo 2 Classic MP was originally supposed to support 32 players.

I like the ledge grab to. I can pull off crouch jumps pretty competently also. It just flows nicely the ledge grab.... I missed quite a few over the weekend.

WTF? Umm what? How?
Bunny hopping annoying? It's one of Halo's basic combat tactics

Edit. I kinda understand why someone wouldn't like it, but it's an integral part of Halo's combat and should never be replaced with something. Halo should play like Halo

crouch jump requires some skill though. Holding A does not.

It's Auto if you have it that way in settings, and you hold jump.

Man I miss this already. :(

Back to the boring Halos I guess..
I kid I kid, don't BR me.

Level design complemented the clamber as well. Walls and plats were built at specific heights so clambering is necessary, not a crutch (getting to Pink 3 for example). It just adds another dimension to design heights. There is now jumps and platforms at the perfect distance and height for a normal jump, as well as clamber height.

The "oh shit button" it provides is actually very welcome in my experience. Missing a jump in the heat of battle always sucks, and as it i NOT automatic, I think clambering is totally fair (you clamber by tapping or holding the jump button at the right time).

So, how is the Halo 5 withdrawal going?

Feeling it tbh. I can't wait till the open beta but already dreading the agonising wait for the final game.

It'll take a massive cock up to put a downer on my expectations.

Still, I'm intrigued about how BTB and vehicles will be handled.

Oh and the visual fidelity of the single player campaign remains to be seen. As it stands, it's not exactly a stellar looking title. The campaign could (and should) be a real stunner in the graphics department.

The addition of all these movement options almost negate callouts and map control. By the time somebody is called out at bottom mid they can be in blue 2 within a second. Was playing with randoms during the beta but even with that caveat it seems like there's no way to control a map when there's this many movement options.

agreed. Plus the addition of fake team members calling out. Almost makes it pointless to talk much.
