Sony announces 18.5 million PlayStation 4 consoles sold WW

Soon there will be 20 million machines out there that will be capable of delivering a compiling and hopefully affordable VR experience.

Now deliver games, and by that I mean games that would only work on the current platforms. It's pretty obvious that the tranasition from ps3 to 4 has now gone into overdrive.

How much were PS3 and 360 at after the same amount of time each?

X360:
10.4 million

PS3:
10.4 million (launched half year later in EU than in US and Japan though)

Not to mention these both numbers are shipped numbers while these PS4 numbers are sell trough. Shipments should be near 20 million already. So pretty much as much as PS3 and X360 combined.

Amazing how playing it safe won this generation. The rest just blundered straight out of the gate.

We'll see how much software it has in 2015.

So the PS4 was at 5.7 million sold in the USA at the end of November, correct? Even if we guess one million for december that brings us to 6.7 million, and would be about a 36 percent share. I really would love to see European numbers.

Jebus, hardware-wise I think it's well deserved of Sony, and come 2015 it's going to have a great library of exclusives.

I don't buy into the "It's going to be the next PS2" hype, but it's gonna be a strong ass system nonetheless.

This just confirms what I already knew... this generation is over, better luck next time Microsoft and Nintendo.

- The Xbone will be lucky to have these numbers this time next year

- The Wii U will never reach this number

I think what matters to them is that they make a profit, not that they beat Sony.

Impressive numbers - 18.5 million in just under 14 months, and with a large number of big 1st party exclusives arriving this year, that number is sure to continue at its current trajectory.

That gif kinda looks like a PS4.

Haven't you seen the listz? There are actually a boatload of titles scheduled for '15. If even 2/3rds of those titles make release, it's gonna be a packed year.

And that's at $399. Imagine what sales are going to be when it's $299 or that mystical $199? Shit's gonna blow up in the next couple years.

Hopefully this can convince Japanese devs to migrate forth.

Although it's gonna be a while, PS4 needs more JRPGs.

Hopefully FFXV and Persona 5 will start the trend with a bang.

That would be leaving money on the table, though.

I suppose. But do you see that Gif from gametrailers showing Ps2's utter dominance in Gen 6?

While I doubt they get quite THAT dominance again, they can come close with aggressive pricing. Stealing a lot of the potential Xbox One install base would mean you have millions more buying Ps4 games.

As it stands now, I predict a 55/35/10 generation (Ps4/X1/WiiU), which is great for Sony but I think they could totally take up to 60% or more market share if they got aggressive.

All this before any really good exclusives have come out too. Crazy.

81m games were also sold (physical and digital).

Yeah, and I want to see what was the situation, both in terms of software numbers and tie-ratios, for other consoles at the same time after the release, so we get a fair comparison.

Assuming that butchers job of a translation means that there are 10.9 million PS+ subscribers...

This is a terrible result.
PS+ is without a doubt the best gaming proposition in the history of mankind, and to only have 10% of your PS3 & PS4 user base on it is embarrassing, for both Sony & humanity in general :)

Wooow when I saw the chartz estimates at 18m I though it couldn't be right... but damn.
It really depends on sales, they may do approaching Christmas but it's quite possible they won't need to drop the price. Unless they're forced to do otherwise by poor sales they'll probably just throw some extra stuff inside the box and keep the price and keep raking in the profits.

Dec 31 2006 - Dec 31 2007 the Wii sold 20.14m

The Wii was a major anomaly as far as console sales are concerned, we shall likely never see the likes of it again, unless another console hits that has the draw to bring in the number of non-gamers that the Wii did at the time.

Regardless, comparing any LTD sales a year out to the Wii is a useless statistic.

Haha at "playing it safe," just give me a box that plays great games, no extra flimflam and at a reasonable price and I am sold in the long run.

And there is no worries software wise, for me at least (on all consoles).

It was actually slightly higher. I got the number wrong:

We also learn that 81.8 million PS4 games were sold counting both retail and digital sales as of January 4th. Of those, 17.8 million copies were moved during the latest Holiday Season.

European sales must be enormous. Over 10 million.
