Sony announces 18.5 million PlayStation 4 consoles sold WW

People say that the Wii audience has disappeared completely into mobile, but consider this... The Wii was a $250 console that roughly 20 million copies in its first year. The PS4 is a $400 console that is only 2 million less than that. How well will the PS4 sell when it gets to the $250 price point?

Yes, console gaming appears to be contracting, but save for Wii U compared to PS3, it seems almost in line with last generation. For all we know, some of those former Wii gamers and Kinect players could be waiting for the PS4 to get to the right price for them to buy.
I feel like the massive success of the PS4 is partially due to the Wii audience jumping into more traditional gaming. That's why I don't get the whole "PS4/XB1 sold X% better than their predecessors" saying I've heard so much. I mean, yeah, but you're also leaving out one of the main companies.

If the population growth is outside of Japan, North America, and western Europe, it is not terribly relevant to companies selling full priced software. At some point BRIC territories could come to make up for Japan being a mess in terms of hardware units. But I am not sure what that does for software. Forty to sixty dollar games are a first world affair. Everything that can be mutilated into a F2P equivalent is on PC in China.

Also, agree with you Arkangel.

yeah, still the console market is not growing (notice the videogame market is), also console gaming can't depend on japan to be relevant...that is like so 80s

PS4 outselling Xbox One 2:1, with a virtous circle awaiting for Sony's console... makes me think MS will rather the have the generation last 4 years than 7 years.

Lets see if the XBox Division still exists in 4 to 7 years

The Wii seemed supply constrained for a much longer period than the PS4 was, so I don't know if you can compare the first year numbers so easily. I think the PS4 won't be able to match the initial Wii craze, but it should enjoy comparatively better sales later and towards the end of its life. Who knows where we'll end up when all is said and done...

I say it will definitely end up outselling the Wii solely because it will have longer legs, but it will never be able to match the Wii craze at its peak.

There is more people now than there was 10 years ago. Sales numbers should be higger, The same old peopel buying the products they like, since their were kids is not a growing market.

We'll have to wait until next year to really see how popular it will be with the general public.

That future market should be kids, but if marketing firms are to believe, kis want ipads these days and care not for Mario.

anecdotal evidence but that does seem to be the case from what I've seen. My lil' bro and his friends mostly play on their Ipads, even with PS4s and Wii Us around.

Nintendo as well. The sooner they can drop the Wii U the better for them.

why do people like to spout this a lot?

Yeah. Sure it helped the Wii U a bit in japan but by no means did it save it.

It's bound to be multiple things. Gaming has become a far more acceptable of a hobby (at least in teenager/young adults) the past several years, no small part likely due to the Wii and mobile/social network games. A lot of good marketing (feels like every half dozen commercials is Greatness Awaits). Yes, casuals making the transition, even if it's just for EA Sports or Activision shooters. People can also be jumping in earlier and front loading adoption rates.

With that said though, there's nothing conclusive to say it's down to the Wii audience acquiring a core-gaming/traditional taste.

Nintendo is the soul of the gaming industry, without them none of this would be possible. They create a new generation of gamers with every console. Their games are timeless.

Yeah, that is my opinion as well. I don't think all the Wii owners jumped onto traditional consoles, though... But I do think a decent chunk of them have. PC's current growth as a gaming platform feels independent of prior successes, and mobile's growth naturally is drawing strength from the decline of the handheld market.

Apart from the NES after the crash.their significance is dwindling and has been since the 90's.

PlayStation has created more new generations of gamers the past 20 years than Nintendo.

Sony is the soul of the gaming industry, without them we would be trapped in a Nintendo-Sega controlled shithole of an industry.

I think this will happen in the long run as well, simply because the developer support is not going to dry up after thirty six months. Wii will outpace it for the early years. Once it gets to the back half of the cycle and all of the third party software that people want is there along with a very mainstream MSRP, the lifetime sales wil be a huge leap over PS3.

I think it will still be tens of millions of units short of PS2 though. This is not the cycle where emerging markets will make up for Japan being a wasteland. Considering the added revenue streams with DLC, PS+ subscriptions, etc. it will balance out. But if Sony has to GO TO CAPCOM to make something like SFV happen, everybody should get used to western companies ruling the market. Japanese publishers seem to have made some bad bets in recent years.

The Wii audience up and disappeared in the most,.Nintendo shrunk back down to their core numbers (even less than previous) and the fly by night "gamers" the Wii brought more likely play mobile games if any.

Moms and grandparents are not buying PS4 and Oprah ain't pushing it either.

You are really barking up the wrong tree with that theory.

So that's basically 14.3 million in 2014. Not bad. It will be interesting to see what PS4's price will be for this year's holiday season.

Just woke up now and wow, that's some mighty impressive numbers!
Well deserved, love my launch unit and has given me so many great moments, and the really big hitters are left to go. Amazing.

Seriously amazing numbers. I haven't used mine as much as I'd like but this years line up is insane. That number is going to balloon for sure

I agree. PS4 will be 349$ with bundles and some retailers offering it for 300$ or lower for BF. Microsoft can go with 300$ but PS4 library(may be morpheus also exists to attract) will be better with the exclusives they are releasing this year overall because they have diversity compared to XB1 which caters only the fans that are established already.

This is based on what?

Glad for Sony. They deserve this sales, but this next year, with Bloodborne, Uncharted and the rest is going to be even more impressive

That seems like an awful lot for only a little over a year. It can't be tracking too far behind the original Wii, surely? Amazing how they did it with just a solid, but not amazing line up.

Playstation always seems to bring out it's best titles towards the end of a console generation, probably because they still spend resources supporting the previous generation for several years into the new one.

The Xbox One must be at least at 10 millions so i don't see where is the 2:1.

Well people are using the date we already have for the Xbone and trying to extrapolate from that since MS are keeping quiet. Xbone at 9.25m sold through WW is 2:1, so I can entirely see that as possible.

Congratulations to Sony, as the Playstation 4 has done a lot right since it's launch, & it's developing an excellent library of games. 'Mercenary Kings' & 'Journey' are two of my favourite games for the console.

Meanwhile, at Nintendo....

For a console with not that much exclusives (that goes for X1 as well, only WiiU has an impressive library of quality exclusive games), it's pretty impressive. Then again, I'm not surprised. Microsoft shot themselves in the foot beginning of the generation. Congrats Sony!

I wouldn't say the "stereotypical" Xbox fan would include games like Ori, Sunset Overdrive, D4 and Inside. Don't have one yet but these sorts of games appeal to me whist halo, call of duty and gears etc don't (I.e the stereotype). I'm glad they're choosing that direction too cos it'll push me over the edge to get one eventually.

As for the sales; amazing job. Love my PS4 and I'm looking forward to the next few months worth of games ;D

You assume it was just moms and grandparents when you forget the children's market the Wii must have as well to be the success it was as a family console... Assuming a boy was 10 when the Wii launched, he would be 18 now and in line with PS4's and XB1's intended audience. I can certainly see 18 year olds who may have started gaming with the Wii purchasing a PS4 and wanting more mature games than what mobile nowadays can give. Even people younger than 18 who started gaming with the Wii might still want a PS4 because they want to be seen as mature. The current success PC and mobile have are due to the current-day children, not the childrens who started gaming with the Wii but moved to more mature games.

Damn! Well done Sony.

I know a lot of people who are still waiting to buy a PS4. I think most people will hold out for a couple years after launch before upgrading. So this is really good news! Can't wait for 20 million!
