Sony announces 18.5 million PlayStation 4 consoles sold WW

Sony going in.

The guy looks depressed and drunk

Good on Sony, looks like PS4 will dominate this gen and probably hit 80m easily.

Now they just need to invest that into more games and exclusives.

This is based on what?

Looking at the XB1 only exclusives in 2015 so far which are established IP's Halo 5, Tomb raider, Fable legends except Quantum Break (This is new IP and different). Look at Sony exclusives diversity Order 1886, Bloodborne, Tearaway unfolded, Rime, Until dawn, Tomorrow children, Alienation, Everybody gone to the rapture etc., which are all new IP's with different users as a target but not existing user base.

I wouldn't say the "stereotypical" Xbox fan would include games like Ori, Sunset Overdrive, D4 and Inside. Don't have one yet but these sorts of games appeal to me whist halo, call of duty and gears etc don't (I.e the stereotype). I'm glad they're choosing that direction too cos it'll push me over the edge to get one eventually.

As for the sales; amazing job. Love my PS4 and I'm looking forward to the next few months worth of games ;D

I'm talking about 2015 exclusives only not cross-gen or platform.

So fückíng impressive and well deserved.

This bodes well for the Order, considering its release date, Grpahics, and install base we could get a sequel.

Also harder for EA to resist Titanfall 2.

I own Titanfall on both PC and my Xbox One, but I want the sequel on PS4.

Uncharted 4 and Guerila Games new IP should really start to blow minds, along with whatever other big devs are cooking up.

Seriously, where did this bullshit come from? they already released more games than on Wii U and Xbone.

Did you guys skip last gen?

Sony are so far ahead of MS and Nintendo in regards to releasing quality and quantity it ain't even funny.

I'm just hoping sony gets its 1st party act together. Infamous was good, and I'm excited for Uncharted but... nothing else. Need to announce some heavy hitters at E3 this year!

18.5 sold is a great number, we shall see how big was shipment up to Dec31 when Sony financials are out. I think they will be in 19-19.5 range, putting PS4 just below Wii in the same time period [20M].

still waiting on that DLNA and media playback

but congrats or whatever

Plex is out on PS4 in EU [and was accessible from web browser from the launch on all territories].

No Bloodborne? I'm actually looking forward to Until Dawn.

To be fair PLEX isn't the complete solution. It does not include music playback. I know you can use USB for that (or Music Unlimited) but some people would prefer to have it delivered via DLNA natively on the OS level and accessible in games.

Why is that? Could you elaborate on that for someone that doesn't have the knowledge?

The current topic appears to be that the CPU is the limiting factor (Ubi had a software demo showing the PS3 cell was quicker than the PS4 CPU) until devs properly get used to using the GPU for additional calcs. Back in the PS3 days the cell CPU used to help out the graphics chip a lot once devs figured out how to use it, the situation will be reversed this time around.

That slide was about showing how you can offload that specific CPU algorithm to the GPU.

It was not some overall CPU benchmark.

From what i've been explained GPGPU is pretty shitty to work with and will mostly be used for stuff like particles.

Cpu is as important as it always has been.

Doesn't GPGPU work much like the SPE's did for cell? And if so, devs managed to achieve a hell of a lot with them. I remember reading that the cell processor was very much like a GPU and they even considered using 2 cells originally in the PS3 with 1 working as the GPU.

I love my ps4 but I think the first years line up of cross gen games and remasters, and delays, has been absolute horseshit. Not as bad as ps3's first year, but close.

2015's killer lineup should, in theory, double that number. Especially with a price cut.

PS3 at least had Uncharted, Folklore, Resistance, and Motorstorm in its first year. PS4 is the worst lineup in Playstation History no joke.

Quicker at calculating cloth simulation to be exact. Don't be fooled into thinking that because of that benchmark it means Cell is a better processor overall.

I'm not sure (I'm only a data base programmer).

From the responses i've got it (here and here) it seems like GPGPU is highly situational and heavy on the GPU and will probably only be used for simulations like particles.

You're likely too optimist with your Xbox number.

True, plus Microsoft will never ever post sold-through now that they're behind Sony, it'll be shipped and nothing more.

Not sure we'll ever get a correct number from them. "almost 10 milliion" is as good as it gets.

Ok but nations are picking up some slack. Right now I can play a Russian-made game on my PS4. Some European countries that weren't developing console games before are now. Australia is seeing game development. Wasn't there an article about game development in Africa recently?

If Japan moves on to mobile, that is still not proof of a contraction. I don't need to provide numbers because I'm not the one making a "severe contraction" claim.

Don't forget the indies. People act like only Japan brings the quirky stuff when plenty of indie devs are filling that niche, and they're coming from all over the world. Sure, they can't fill the hole that's been left by the great Japanese developers that have either closed down or are a shadow of their former selves, but they are new blood and they can become great on their own merits.

Ah ok, cloth simulation is a series of calculations better suited for a GPU type processor I guess then? Do you think we ever saw what the cell could do as a CPU as it seemed that most of the time it was held back by having to support the GPU.

Software: 81.8 million.
Hardware: 18.5 million

Tie ratio: 4.42

It says software sales are from both PStore and retailers.

81.8 million....holy shit that jump.

360:

Software (excluding XBL) : 55.12 million
Hardware: 10.4 million
Tie Ratio (excluding XBL) : 5.3

PS4's user base is expanding at a rapid rate is a major reason for the lower tie ratio. Still impressive software sales.

Hopefully this can convince Japanese devs to migrate forth.

Although it's gonna be a while, PS4 needs more JRPGs.

Hopefully FFXV and Persona 5 will start the trend with a bang.

I want a VC4 on PS4....SEGA pls give the series another chance

Sure, it's probably not that far behind, likely around 9-9.5M. But so the 2:1 ratio seems quite correct.

Congrats Sony. 18.5 sold through is very, very impressive. That's a lot of very happy customers (myself included).

What's more impressive is the 4+ attach rate which is a great number.

Nothing stops this train!
