Yeah, also I don't think Oda is very good artist in general.

I will agree if you talking about his woman design. but his other non=woman design is pretty good

Hm. I will say, though, that while she's awesome, she's the only black character I can think of from HxH and yet she's forced into a servant/butler role.

Still, she's pretty cool, and I didn't really care about that much.

Actually, there's quite a few.

I mean, if you're talking main characters, then yeah, you have a point, but other than being one of the main 4 or being hisoka/a top hunter, the safest thing you can probably be is be a butler for one of the MC's.

I mean, half the characters in the show die anyway. I'm surprised Canary hasn't been killed yet considering how expendable all of the butlers are.

Ah, you're right. I can't believe I at least didn't remember that new character from the last animated arc. I guess Canary had the most presence, but thanks for reminding me of the rest.

I know I'm bending the rules bit, but RJ from me and the devil blues needs more love. A manga about slavery and racism in post civil war southern United States with blues and the devil thrown in the mix? What's not to love?

prison school is another manga by the same author, but it's a lot less serious. Check that out too if you're a true ass man

Interesting

There's a character in the anime Air Gear who runs her own crew. She's black but I can't think of her name. She gets beat by Kazu (and falls in love with him I think)

If you are referring to Natsumi Iriya then yeah shes not Black.

How so?

Also REALLY surprised no one mentioned Afro Samurai. I mean, really.

Never heard of this. Now I need to check it out.

Nothing really racist about it, altho his Dumbo-sized ears are goofy. That isn't something exclusive to black people tho (or that occurring on anyone for that matter).

Afro, surprised it wasn't first post.

How can y'all tell that most of these are supposed to be black folk? Is it just by being brown, because brown really applies to anyone not white.

Most of them look pretty ambiguous.

Black characters in the Dragonball series are so racist. That is the major thing I have against Toriyama and am total comfortably with the total absence of black people in Chrono Trigger and the Dragon Quest games. I just pretend that Piccolo is the sole black character in the series and I'm not technically wrong.

I had a conversation about Yoruichi's ethnicity/race with a friend once, I was saying I thought she was mixed while he believed she was just a tanned white person (his reasoning was that she didn't have "big lips" or a "big nose"). The fact that she has an afro and some type of Diana Ross swag in one of the anime endings makes me think the author intended her to be black/mixed. I don't read Bleach though, just know who the character is.

She isn't even human. Bet not even Kubo knows how that works with Shinigami.

Really loving this topic.

It's always a huge relief when I get to see black anime characters that DON'T have big bright rubber clown lips, or any other ridiculously drawn features.

The funny thing about this is that big noses and lips are found in all ethnicities. But when people think of black people, they think of a singular stereotypical image with a particular set of features, and some think that if you're going to have a black character in a show featuring stylized humans, these stereotypical features need to be played up as much as possible because how can they be black otherwise? This same question isn't applied to characters that are perceived as white.

Caucasian and asian characters are afforded the luxury of having a diverse range of physical characteristics, this includes facial features, body types, hair colour, etc in stylized works. But there are some who believe that black characters need to exhibit certain pronounced ethnically stereotypical features in order to "qualify" as black, and that the concept of mukokuseki does not apply to them even if its stated specifically in the work itself.

Yourichi always seemed a bit more of Indian than African descent but its ambiguous enough that it could probably go either way.

He got a new job all right...

*PICS*

Hairline+Bushy 'stache

He had to take a job in the syndicate to make ends meet it seems

I'm going to assume this is not true for the sake of my sanity and just say they look a bit a like :/

We never know. He probably didn't think too long about that question.

Ugh, does ODA really not know a single country in Africa or did he seriously think it was all one country. I agree he probably didn't put that much thought into this answer but its still a super shitty answer. I also find it REALLY hard to believe Aokiji isn't Black even if he was based on a Japanese actor.

He may be based on that actor in terms of facial features but his skin color is black, even his hair looks like that of a black person, and it's quite different from the actor he's based on.

So apparently hairstyle determines someones ethnicity? Get out of here with that.

being "black" has little to do with your ethnicity other than the fact that africans happen to be comprised of mainly dark skin people (which has resulted in people associating "people of color" or "black people" to mean african people). black literally just means you're dark-skinned, and was used by white people to describe the influx of very dark skinned slaves in the 18th century.

Read the comment that I responded to first.

With what that person said, so then with that mentality

Then these people should be considered black too eh?

See how stupid that looks when you take real examples and put it up to the quote. As with what was originally said by the user there was nothing left for misunderstanding.

Just because he unlocked the secrets of street ball doesn't make him black. He's just tan.

Damn, this is not the voice I would expect in the dub. That has to be some has to be a joke.

Yeah, he's Japanese. Lots of people aren't posting actual Black (African ancestry) characters. Unless we're talking about darker skin in general.
