Naughty Dog won't push Uncharted 4 to 60fps if it compromises player experience

I'm going to bet that they had a look at the backlash they got about the graphics in the psx demo and realised that the people who shout about visual downgrades are louder than the people that would call them shit devs for 30.

Screenshots are what will be posted on sites and Uncharted.has aleays.been about flashy graphics.

I think it's quite simple really. I have never been able to tell if a game ran at 30fps or 60fps until I played TLOUR. I played for a while and then switched to 30fps and could see the difference. The following day I then played a game on my PS3 and I was back to not noticing. NOW, if this game can run at 60fps most of the time but drop drastically with huge set pieces, because I have a point of reference within the same game, I'm going to notice immediately. This will spoil my experience.

I really hope they don't do this.

I love gaming at 60fps, but I'll take a solid 30fps anyday over a roughly optimised game that oscillates between the two.

They should never have even said 60fps.

A game that goes over 30fps is far better than a 30fps locked game.

I'd rather better graphics with more detail and effects than 60. I would pick Forza Horizon 2 and it's beautiful lighting and weather than Forza 5 with its 60fps. If I want a locked 60 then I'll get that on PC.

Unfortunate, but not entirely unexpected. I had high hopes with how they started this gen by talking about the benefits of 60FPS, but at the end of the day their priorities lie elsewhere.

So you are arguing that devs should just appeal to the lowest common denominator for the purpose of sales?

Do you regard ND, as a studio, highly?
If what ND has been delivering the past 5 years is considered the lowest common denominator, then I want more. They have historically delivered on providing games tuned to exactly what their vision is, and it is a vision I enjoy. This game will certainly fall in line with this legacy of quality. Why should their trademark visual fidelity take a hit to appease a vocal minority?

Demo still looked great, but it's obvious that ND shouldn't have mentioned that they were aiming for 1080/60 so soon.

Felt more like a statement to show how powerful the PS4 is that they can offer those debut trailer visuals at a consistent 1080/60 rather than something they actually knew they could deliver.

That trailer they showed looked more like a stable 25 with dips down to 15.
The joke is flying by me here. That OG trailer showed a locked 60fps cinematic.

Why shouldn't they have targeted 60 fps, again? They thought it was possible and they are still targeting it *but if it comprimises with something they want to achieve, they won't think twice about dropping*.

Just because neogaf always revieves "we're targeting 60 fps" as "yes, locked at 60 for sure" doesn't mean they shouldn't target or even mention that they are targeting it. This shouldn't even be as big news but this thread will be right up there with the NPD thread because of GAFs dumb obsession with 60 FPS, you can bet on that.

30 FPS Campaign
60 FPS Multiplayer

Please

That would be the best solution, i hope they are considering it, even if it meant using resolution scaling technique like KZ:SF.

Btw, so ND are humans, not gods or wizards after all? Shocking news! ;)

But there were some people hoping it would be able to achieve bar raising graphics while also at 60fps because, well, that's basically what Naughty Dog said they were going to do.

The folks that want that are expecting too much from the hardware. It's too early in this generation for that kind of graphics and is in my opinion unfair on the developers.

Don't blame the people here, blame the expectations that Naughty Dog themselves created.

So we get to the point where devs won't say anything about games they are working on because folks will get their pitch forks out if the devs can't deliver their lofty ambition. Hardly reasonable behaviour is it.

No need to panic

Particles, shading and shadows to medium for sweet 60 fps.

A game that goes over 30fps is far better than a 30fps locked game.

37 FPS doesn't offer that much more fluidity over 30 FPS yet will have judder that some people are really perceptive to.

if you're close to 50 FPS the irregularities in drawn frames at least have the upside of perceived smoothness. 37 FPS should be locked to 30.

Already backpedaling on 60fps, I wonder how 60fps impacts the user experience in a negative way that Naughty Dog talks about. Sounds like some PR spinning to me.

LMAO!!!

No pretty graphics.

What has what they've currently achieved got to do with what they're aiming for?
I'll refer you to durante
This is a common sentiment, but I don't think it's accurate. In a title on a console, a solid 60 FPS doesn't just "come together", you need to plan everything (including assets) around it from the start.

Personally I would prefer the stylized realism of ND's PS3 games at 60 fps over the photorealism we're seeing in UC4 at 30 fps.

That said, photorealistic visuals are probably a huge draw to casuals.

Because 20s FPS PS3 TLoU won Neogaf GotY of 2013. You say that below 60fps is not acceptable but majority of our community vote for 20s fps game like TLoU.

Also this. GAF raved (and raved) about GTA V and TLOU, both games that regularly performed in the 20s. If even one of the most obsessive gaming communities turns a blind eye to performance as long as the overall game is good enough, why should Naughty Dog care?

Devs could talk about the game and less about its "specs".

Well I hope there's an option to unlock it then. Coming from PC it's difficult to play at 30.

The only problem here is that Naughty Dog should not have made promises they can't keep.

LOL. They did not promise. They hoped they could get to 60fps and shared that hope with their fans.

It's a game. The experience is paramount, and when using a controller at locked 30fps, it feels pretty terrible. A bit of slight screentearing is nothing.

If controller lag's your concern (it really shouldn't be), know that it can be polled at a higher frequency separately. NFS (Most Wanted? Hot Pursuit?) and Driveclub do this.

So a bunch of posts that hardly fit all the criteria... all from the same poster.

Nice contingent there.

Fits the idea of "cannot get 1080p 60 with crazy graphics, then you are lazy dev."
Also, that was just an instance I remembered. I cannot be an encyclopedia for other poster's postings.

Those graphics in the trailer were impressive for 60 fps (their stated target) so good in fact people said it can't be 60 fps. Now that we learn it's barely running at 40 fps it's not as visually impressive to me.

There's a difference between being "not as impressive" as running the same graphics at 60 fps and being "not impressive" at all. I can agree to the former, but you said the latter. For it to be not impressive, you would need to give example of a more impressive console game, like what I asked you to do.

I'm sorry, but I think "crazy graphics" is more nebulous than "PC-beating graphics".
