I am letting them have their fun, I'm just judging them while they do it. Seems normal to me.

And I'm not distancing myself from otaku in front of "normal japanese people" unless "normal japanese people" are neogaf posters.
Sorry ordered that a bit badly but "people" wasn't aimed directly at you, just something your post reminded me of.

Edit: Posted before your edit. You're right, it doesn't exist. Why is why I'm here to judge and criticise your criticisms. :P

Well to be fair I definitely distance myself from these people.

Not to look cool in front of the Japanese or anything since I don't care but for whatever reason it's irritating walking around and seeing stereotypes like this. Maybe because I think Akiba would be kind of nice if it wasn't full of them
and overweight old japanese men wearing junior idol tshirts.

Also again, "these people" just refer to people who buy absolutely anything 2D and Japanese because it makes them look like some kind of otaku god. I don't know why that aspect bothers me but it does. Replace all of his garbage merch with a single character and I would be fine with it.

I mean, it's his hobby. Can't really hate on him. People aren't weirded out when guys have a ton of football merch and jerseys hanging up in their living room and cluttering the shelves, right?

What if someone had a room that was completely full of Natalie Portman posters? That would be pretty weird

One of my younger cousins has her room almost filled with One Direction posters.

I better go tell her she needs to seek rehab since he apparently has a problem.

Than again, liking One Direction is a problem. Heh I kid. XD

but seriously...

Folks, I thought you are better than this.
I thought you can let people enjoy whatever they want, provided it does not hurt anyone.

But this thread reads like someone stepped on a beehive. And you are the angry bees. What is the matter?

And grown man's obsession with condemning nerds/otakus could be interpreted as a mental issue as well. Where is the line?

I'm with you. just let him enjoy his hobby and love what he does.

So many people in my country go crazy about football, buy posters and shirts for thousands of euro and stuff. that's the same. just let him enjoy what he likes.

good on him! from experience japanese love foreigners who immerse themselves in japanese cultures.

If u hating on him I suggest you go there and experience it, its a wonderful feeling.

I live here, can I continue to hate?

Also is "salty" the new "u mad??"

I kind of know what you mean. It's a little sad to have an obsession of that level yet still have quite a low level understanding of it. It makes it all seem a little more childish, like people going around wearing Naruto headbands and eating awful strawberry pocky.

But at the end of the day even if we can discuss Nippon Ichi Software's impending financial meltdown in intricate detail, we're not a million miles away from the kid eating up the Master Chief cat helmet edition. And to most people, we're exactly the same. :)

My post was a joke about that guy who really liked Natalie Portman. Forget his name

Shit, my sisters wall was full of Westlife posters when she was growing up

It would be a problem if she's the same age this guy is.

At that point it becomes kind of just funny for me, but it's cool to see people so secure in their interests.

Also I hope people here aren't getting kicks out of feeling superior. I can get why you'd find this stuff to be less viable or fulfilling, but that kind of attitude is really unpleasant, and I actually think less of people who look at others like that.

How old is she and how old are the band members in the photos? If she's a 30 year old and focused on the band when they were like 12, then yes, she has a problem.

Hell, a 30 year old obsessed with One Direction in general probably does.

As long as a hobby/interests doesn't affect their lives negatively too much, its okay by me.

Its just anime and a Japanese sub culture. Not like he's causing anyone harm.

Really now?
Where is the evidence that he don't has sex?

People on gaf who are relatively normal (by their standards) complain about never getting laid, the thought of someone with this kind of extreme obsession with his hobby getting any is something they can't entertain.

There's a major difference between experiencing Japanese culture and doing whatever it is that guy is doing. I can easily do the former without doing the latter.

This is exactly why I have fewer white anime-loving friends than Asian anime-loving friends. Only white people do that kind of stuff here. And yes, I know it's anecdotal, but that's exactly what it's like in these parts.

Past a certain point it becomes obsession born of mental issues, not a hobby. Where do you think this guy is?
notch throws big party, notch is depressed, some one buys lots of anime shit, that person has mental issues

why do we do this to people, why do we force standards of normality and say that people who don't follow them have mental issues. Thats so fucked up
