Windows 10: The Next Chapter - Media Briefing Details (Phil Spencer speaking)

Just because one system in the market does something does not mean everyone must do that thing. Even if major companies adopt that practice, that does not mean other companies must, nor that consumers should be complacent in accepting that change.

"The price of freedom is eternal vigilance."

If consumers allow companies to close the market, segment it, and exploit them, then that is as much the consumer's fault as theirs. One tool is education. Another is consumer action, either distributing software themselves, or supporting the companies that meet their needs.

Further, the closed nature of smartphone hardware contributes to being able to lock down that part of the market. It is why open hardware standards, such as PC, should continue to be supported, as they keep the market honest, and push innovations.

The massive backlash against Window 8 and its proposition to close off applications that were not Microsoft approved, as illustrated by Valve's hesitation at that prospect, should have been enough to keep Microsoft from attempting to do so again. If they try to do so again, I hope there will be just as much backlash.

If they try to do so again? Their store is there in Win8.1 and will be in Win10.

As much as they pretend they get "desktop" with windows 10, it is clear they closing that platform into a wallet garden.

Personally I don't worry much, I do most of my dev time on linux, most of the games I care about are fine and dandy running under ubuntu.

so yeah, thanks gaben.

What makes you think they are walling things off? They are even including a package manager, so the distribution of software will be even easier.

Tickets are non refundable, admit it, you're curious as to what they'll announce :P

OT: Put me on the train!

I eagerly await this briefing.

However, I can't say that I care about what Microsoft does as long they don't create a walled garden, GFWL 2.0, or do anything to destroy the backwards compatibility of PC.

Am becoming slightly hype, no idea if it'll end up being good or bad but I want to see it.

Edit oh, yeah put me on the train I guess. Those are fun

All I need is a KI Port (and maybe Halo MCC, although I never expect it to happen at this point in time)
Gimme a steamworks of the old pc ports of Halo 1-2 with actual decent netcode and I'm happy
Curious to how 10 will be amazing for gaming.

Can I get a ride on the train? :P

I can't wait to see what they have to show. I really feel like it's time for me to move away from W7, so hopefully it's full of good news.

Put me on board I guess ha.

If there's any chance at all that 10 will use less precious video memory than 8.1, then put me in that train.

...oh, forgot I didn't put an avatar yet =/

edit: now I need to fix this transparency...

Best case scenario - Phil Spencer and Gabe Newell walk out on stage, give each other the Predator hand shake/bicep flex and then sign a peace treaty to announce all Xbone titles, present and future, to work natively on windows 10 and will be distributed through Steam.

Worst case scenario - None of that actually happens and we get GFWL 2.0 or some lame PC port that no one actually cares for.

Either way, sign me up for the train ride. Regardless of what they do for gamers, Win10 is a solid OS so far from my own testing.

I would like to see that Best case scenario play out.

I'd like to get on the train!

I think this month's discussion is going to be just a glimpse of what they're doing, with a lot more info releasing in the months immediately preceding the official Windows 10 release. I really hope they begin to embrace the PC.

I feel like no best-case scenario for this conference is complete without the return of at least 1 of MS's PC IPs. Age of Empires, Rise of Nations/Legends (the latter of which nobody remembers except me), Freelancer, Impossible Creatures (which even I barely remember), Mechcommander... they're seriously sitting on a gold mine here.

Most hopeful about Microsoft re-igniting talks about supporting the PC MASTER RACE! Count me in!

Also that Windows 10 announcement looks cool I guess...

I do not believe Microsoft is even thinking in closing down downloads to the Windows Store only. The idea that an app distributed there may work universally on different devices is definitely appealing (and also the fact that it's another form of exposition, if the Store gets traction) and can convince developers to work eith it, but not ONLY it. And one of Windows' strengths is software compatibility, so Win32 apps will still be sold elsewhere.

I'm going to be building another pc when 10 launches, so I'm very much looking forward to this. Show me what you got microsoft!

I'm expecting a new DirectX version exclusive to the latest version of Windows, which has worked so wonderful in the past.

I'm expecting a new DirectX version exclusive to the latest version of Windows, which has worked so wonderful in the past.

I believe it will be available for Windows 8.x onwards. Windows 7's mainstream support ended, which means no more new features will be added to the system (and DirectX is considered a system feature). Then again, if they make Windows 10 free to Windows 8 users, I believe there won't be many reasons to keep using it.

How exactly is it clear? What exact actions have Microsoft taken into this direction that makes it obvious?

People tried to push this idea with Windows 8 and were wrong too.

Gabe was mad because he thought Microsoft was creating a direct competitor to Steam in Windows.

The main benefit to a GFWL2 is that Microsoft will initially support it with games, then we'll just have to wait 7 years for the DRM to be patched out and released on Steam.

I'm not expecting much but I'm hoping they will allow desktop apps on the store.

But sure I'll board this train, do you accept Myki?

Well for instance, you need a Microsoft email account for full benefit of the system. You cannot attach gmail or your work email to win 8.1. Then there was a failed Appstore for metro applications, it was pretty clear that they wanted to monetize the new UI via their own hub, like apple does. They really tried to make it the thing in a very obvious way.

Wouldn't that be the point? If it happens it should have been obvious to anyone since Windows 8 was announced.
Can I have a seat on the doom train?

http://postimage.org/

choochoo

Seems to me like a Doomtrain would have been way more appropriate than a Hype Train.

However after the Darkest Moments in MS History as exemplified by Xbox One, Windows 8, and Windows Phone 8, it seems like Windows 10 has a chance to be the point where MS starts to turn the corner from the trainwreck and start making things people want again like Xbox 360 and Windows 7. I'm not getting on a Hype Train for Win10 but I'm cautiously optimistic that Satya Nadella's MS will actually try at least pretend to make products that consumers want instead of what MS wants to shove down everyone's collective throats.

I'm not sure what the best outcome would be for PC gaming. Maybe it would be better overall if Microsoft makes another agressive move towards locking down the Windows ecosystem so that it lights a fire under Valve's ass to pick up the pace with SteamOS?

Time will tell, personally I think they gonna keep trying... Anyhow, if Windows 10 turns out to be good, that is great news for PC gaming.

I'm just glad I have an option now with Linux to keep gaming with my own hardware, with software that is open source, I learnt to code in unix systems, it is where I work, it is what I like... I'm glad I have a option to also game there too.

So pardon me if I don't jump into the hype train, again: hopefully W10 turns out better than W8.

BTW Gaben would be right to be mad if MS wanted to compete with Steam, Microsoft makes the damn Operating system, how is not that disloyal competition ? .. Do you actually think Office, Internet Explorer, Messenger, etc.. etc.. are Market leaders because they the better option!? go back in history, Microsoft has killed every single competing & superior product with pre-installed software. They have an history man, They did it with Lotus, they did it with Netscape, they did with ICQ. Internet explorer did not become the most used browser because of its quality.

If they want to kill something in its platform, they'll find the way, they've done it before, wouldn't surprise me if they do it again.

Not true. My Microsoft account is with a Gmail. You can create with any other email provider. And the same account will work on any of their services. And if you don't want to sync your settings and apps, you can simply use a local account.

Don't see any reason they would try. In fact, they never did with Windows 8, because any app available on the Windows Store had to be usable by touch devices and obey the Modern language guidelines. The moment they announced that, it was obvious it couldn't compete with Steam. After all, games as Win32 apps are very different than the ones available on the Store.

Now, I do believe they will be more relaxed about these rules for Windows 10. But it wouldn't make any sense to say they would want to close Win32 apps to the Windows Store. They want universal apps there (to work on any of their devices) and Win32 apps aren't that. And even if they put a specific category for Win32 apps, they already showed they are not as aggressive as they once were. Windows 8.1 was distributed on the Store, while any update after that (including the Windows 10 previews) were distributed on Windows Update.

I hope they can explain well why we need anything beyond windows 7, which are rather fine.

The key word is "need". Sure they may have some funny stuff like not including the start button again, but other than that what was the point of windows 8 ? I still dont use them and doing my job stunningly well.

If you go that way, I was already fine with Windows 2000 back then and no update has really been a must-have. As soon as a PC OS is stable and lets you run your software, any improvement is mostly fine tuning and additional services that could have run on previous versions of the OS if they really wanted to...

I've noticed a lot of multi-monitor performance issues in Win7. In an age where more and more people are going the multi-monitor route this is unacceptable.

Sure, but the differences become more and more minor between the releases.

Certainly i would not consider the tabs in windows 8 a valid reason to roll a new version.

Microsoft Will Announce Something “Very Exciting” at Major Event Next Week
Microsoft is going to hold an event primarily dedicated to Windows 10 next week, and from what we previously heard from Xbox Division head Phil Spencer, we’re going to get announcements about Microsoft as a whole, about Windows and about Xbox as well.

Yesterday, Xbox Live Operations Manager Eric Neustadter teased about it during a Google Hangout hosted by Director of Programming Larry Hryb.

I know a little bit about what they’re gonna be talking about, and it’s very exciting.

Neustadter did not provide further information on what he was talking about, but he definitely did sound excited.

We’ll have to wait for Wednesday in order to know all the details (and of course you’ll read about it all here on DualShockers). Some think we’re going to hear about Kinect’s poster boy Kudo Tsunoda’s new project, which could be Microsoft’s take on virtual reality, but for now there’s no way to say for sure.

Not entirely sure the site isn't banned?
Dualshockers?

Best outcome is significant performance improvements from Win 10 and DX12 and MS making great PC games again, IMO. And putting them on Steam, of course.

Yeah, that reads like streaming from Xbox One to PC (W10 exclusive).
Not interested.

Not necessarily. They've been using "Xbox" as the name for the whole entertainment environment (see Xbox Music and Xbox Video for example), so attaching to PC games doesn't necessarily mean streaming one to the other.
A feature that I suppose is a given is better integration of game progress and achievements. They could/should expand all the community features of Xbox One to PC games (notifications, video sharing, comments, progress comparison with friend lists,...).

Meh. What PC games ?
I still don't see how it's possible to integrate Xbox into PC without porting games that are the centerpiece of the Xbox ecosystem. Or they're only talking about features.

I believe Xbox One games will be ported to PC. So console gamers will just buy the console and PC gamers are playing these games on PC, Windows 10 only of course, thanks to DX12 with low level support! This is gonna be amazing... Not that I care about the current Xbox lineup, but... I'm sure there's more to come!

I don't think MS's plans for PC are that serious. They will most likely bring Xbox features to W10/PC but not games per se.
