Most Disappointing 2014 - Destiny Vs. AC Unity and Halo MCC vs Driveclub

Destiny is the most disappointing game for GAF, and then Destiny is probably the most played PS4 game in the year.

A real disparity.

I would say MCC is the real disappointment. Most people who were excited for it didn't even get it working and then never even went back to play it.
I've seen a ton of excited streamers talk about playing Halo MCC for 24 hour streams, going through Halo 2 and playing multiplayer all the time. Never happened.

What's wrong with DAI?

It's buggy and broken.

I don't think anyone should have high expectations for technical performance in Bioware games. KotOR was pretty rough, and ME's fairly infamous I believe, and it sounds like the Infinity Engine is a beast to fight with. Frankly they've been UP on average compared to the past, certainly while DA:I had its issues (weird skipping later on in Haven on PS4) it generally ran better than KotOR or ME did for first game of a generation.

Hmmm... I guess. Mass Effect 3 was also buggy as all hell so I guess it's expected. But I was actually looking forward to trying Dragon Age so for me that was the most disappointing.

I really enjoyed Unity and I'm still really enjoying Driveclub. I wasn't looking forward to Destiny but still bought it, just haven't played enough to make a judgement yet. Not a fan of Halo at all.

Didn't play Halo, but Destiny easily takes the cake for me. No contest, really. The first game I've sold back to a store in years, because I knew there was zero chance I'd ever want to play it again.

Of course, that really has a lot to do with my personal excitement and how Bungie talked up the game. At it's core, it's a pretty well-made game, but the overall package and Bungie's attitude/direction towards the franchise is just immensely disappointing. It will take a lot to get me interested in anything related to Destiny again.

Dragon Age: Inquisition is probably a close second for me. I knew I shouldn't have let myself get excited after Dragon Age 2. I still can't believe *that* was their attempt to make good on past mistakes. *That* was what they thought represented a good direction for the series and a template for their future RPGs. It just affirmed my suspicion that Bioware can't make good RPGs anymore. They've got pretty good writers on staff, but that's it.

Any particular platform version you've had all the issues with? PS4 here.

I didn't buy the game myself. I was interested to play it so I was monitoring the feedback from players in the OT and in patch threads as they were released. I saw for myself the large number of issues that were being reported by players across all platforms so I held off on my purchase. I think it's widely known that the game is buggy...

It is? I have about 50+ hours in to it and have only suffered a single bug in all that time….

I suffer one game-breaking bug for any play session that lasts ~2 hours. It's been a lot bugger than ACU for me (and others I know).

PS4 here too.

Haha this is rich.

MCC for sure. Man that hurts to even say. I was also surprised by just how disappointing and overall buggy DA:I could be but I don't think its in the same overall sphere of these games. Even if my own multi console and PC experience was something out of a nightmare.

MCC. Unity on XB1 is alright now. Horrible fps but most of it's bugs are fixed. Driveclub is fine now and doing very well, Destiny is the most playable of them all, even though a lot don't like it.

Destiny is a major disappointment in everything but it's technical prospects. Though i can't say it's AI and scenarios are anything complex, but it runs solid.

Destiny was a huge letdown in potential
Driveclub was a huge letdown for me as its just an okay racing game IMO but it works now
Halo MCC is easily the biggest for me. Good god that game

In all fairness it should probably be Master Chief Collection. 50% of the game is broken and non-functional.

Destiny is content thin but at least it works as advertised. ACU is buggy and is loaded with crummy microtransaction hooks, but at least it works as advertised.

Drive Club has similarly broken multiplayer but they got it fixed much faster and expectations for the game were never really that high. People were buying an Xbox One for MCC.....nobody in their right mind was buying a PS4 for Drive Club.

Destiny will probably win since it was the most widely played and hated game on this forum, but applying any logic I think you have to give it to MCC even if you haven't played it.

The selection seems a bit odd but whatever let's have a go. DriveClub is working essentially fine and apart from a server side bug has actually be solid. MCC remains much worse. AC Unity though I felt was worse than both of these technically yet it's not even on the list for technical (which I'm going to ignore and put it on there).

Anyway I'd say AC Unity was the most technically disappointing overall with MCC more disappointing online (would have tied with DriveClub but for me that's operating fine now and has been since the last big patch).

Destiny dissappointed many but it has damn few bugs and worked as intended it's just not what many wanted - but honestly you could take any game and find people dissappointed in it. Heck you can take a game before it releases like The Order and find it disappointing. Nonetheless Destiny would be my personal choice too! Poor old Destiny. Anyway it was way to much rinse/repeat online for fun and way to little SP and actual sense you got anywhere narrative wise for me.

Haha this is rich.

I'd say it's pretty fair to say that bugs were widely experienced with Inquisition. Nothing too major for a lot of people, but I saw it brought up a lot in various discussions, reviews, and of course the impressions posted here on GAF.

I played on PC (I think I finished everything there was to do at around 85~ hours?) and only had two bugs that caused me to exit the game and reload my save. Both had to do with the conversation interface failing to appear during major cutscenes. There were also tons of other "open world jank" stuff like characters popping about and clipping and what not, but nothing too crazy.

Probably that you don't own the game and have labelled it the buggiest, most disappointing game of the year.

I didn't say it was the buggiest. I said it was my most technically disappointing game of the year because it was one that I was actually interested in playing but didn't due to technical issues. I don't really care that much that Unity and MCC are buggy because I had no interest in playing them anyway.

Driveclub got fixed and so did halo right? And AC games are expected to be shitty once in a while. Destiny is by far the most disappointing. The lack of story and endgame grind ruin the game. Not to mention how repetitive the campaign is as a whole. That entire game is basically the beta with a map change. You need to play with friends in order to enjoy it.

Destiny. Had almost no expectations and it still managed to underwhelm me.

I haven't really gotten into the ring of technical issues, but isn't Driveclub mostly fixed even though it released after Halo MCC while Halo MCC is still broken?

I'm not sure about PC and I've heard it has had issues there, and I think I've heard a few people on general platforms getting a 'banter bug' (though I never) but it was close to flawless for me on PS4 through 150 hours. Runs smooth and I think I only had 2 bugs where I had trouble talking to NPCs in two different occasions (fixed by saving/reloading) that affected about, 15 minutes of gameplay total. The other 149 hours and 45 minutes were as smooth as any other game.

I can only answer with destiny. Huge letdown. Along with mcc for technical difficulties since I do not currently own a ps4.

What's wrong with DAI?

Are you serious? This COULD have been Game of the Year. It infuriates me to see a game that had the platform to be progressive but decided to be lazy instead. The fact that the main character only has two options for gender is appalling. I appreciate a lot of what the game did do for the community, but by not taking the next step and giving a true role playing experience. Maybe in DA:4 they will finally have the tech to allow the main character to transition as the game goes on. That is what I was hoping for this game, but was disappointed.

I know no other game is doing it, but it is time that someone be the hero of the community and be truly progressive.

Destiny. There was lots to love in the rest even if they were disappointing. Destiny disappointingly didn't even bring much to love under its flaws.

What are we talking about? Is DA:I really that broken for so many people?

I only played it for about 15-20 hours, and so far it feels like a perfect DA game. Though I find the romance options severely lacking, I have no other problems with it...

Lol I can't believe people still think Driveclub is broken. It's a fantastic racer right now. For me it's watchdogs I enjoyed Destiny but watchdogs was the first game I got with my Ps4 and boy was I let down by the graphics, Story and the gamelay was also meh too.

This thread is from November. Most of the complaints now are just that they aren't a fan of the game itself.

It's not that it's broken (although some people seem to have experienced major bugs), but I just think it's a really bad game and an even further leap in the direction I didn't want them to take with the series.

A lot of people seem to love it, though, and it certainly won its fair share of GOTY awards, so I'm sure Bioware is happy. I just think it's a really bland and boring RPG, but don't let my opinion affect your enjoyment.

Driveclub is my GOTY. Despite it's rocky start, it's an absolutely sublime racer that not only had it's online issues sorted a while back, but is a much more comprehensive game today.

I also very much enjoyed Destiny despite it's issues, of which there are many. Lack of content and grindy design aside, the gunplay is fantastic, and I absolutely love Crucible. It was also extremely fun collecting all the different Exotics and Legendaries, and even levelling them up, till they made you do it all over again that is. And it worked very well day one. No glitches, online issues or anything like that.

Can't speak for Unity as I've yet to play it, but from what I hear the tech issues have been mostly sorted? Just the micro transaction centric design, and overall gameplay issues compared to previous instalments as negatives from the sounds of things.

Master Chief Collection seems to still have persistent online issues despite the numerous patches, and as far as I know many of the campaign issues still remain too (checkpoint woes, frame rate issues etc). It has some sort of BETA programme starting several months after release too?

I guess if I had to pick one it'd be MCC, namely because it's a bigger franchise than the others I feel, and on the whole was more important not to fuck up. I also feel that given the fact that it's a port job, it should have had far more polished campaigns, with more consistent visuals, less bugs, and a locked 60fps. I honestly think the repercussions of MCC will be felt a long ways in to the future. This is a massive blow to the franchise and it's legacy.
Microtransaction centric design is complete false.

It goes to Assassin's Creed: Unity... because i was such a assassins creed fan this game was a huge disappointment.

- Taking out features in the game to put them in other forms of media (The Unity App is essentially the brotherhood missions where you would send out assassins and rank them up... this was in every game since brotherhood)

- technical issues... (5 patches later... there's a lady in the crowd... in the air... walking sideways)

- Microtransactions (wtf are helix points.. why are you asking for my credit card?)

fuck this game...it left a permanent scar on the series worse than AC3... i hope they really think about releasing AC games bi-annually from now on.

Honorable Mention: Destiny... i still play the hell out of the game because the core mechanics are so refined... but grimoire cards? death match only crucible? weak DLC? leveling system?

it all needs work.

I give Destiny a lot of shit but at least it worked out of the box. Sure the story is garbage if you can call it a story, and its repetitive as fuck for missions and their dlc strategy is poop, but at least the actual game work.

I have no idea how DC and AC are doing now but from the MCC threads, that thing is still a clusterfuck.

Most disappointing for me is Destiny without a doubt. With the amount of time and money spent on this game and with the pedigree of Bungie, I was extremely let down with the final product and bored to tears with it very quickly. Honest Game Trailers hit the nail on the head with how I feel about it, and the DLC was more insult to injury. It's one digital pre-order plus season pass that I wish I could get my money back for.

Most technical disappointment is definitely Halo: MCC. The fact that they have to go back into Beta testing for it answers your question. Fortunately, I haven't run into any single player campaign issues, but multiplayer matchmaking is still a drag. I do feel for them because I too know the pains of working in software, but this was a giant oversight by them and only assurance now is that they're continuing to work on it and hopefully resolve their problems for their future releases.
