Persona 4 Arena Fan here.

The trailer look really really good, and the art style look great too. I'm a huge fan of jrpg genre but I was turned off by Persona 2 when I was young. Lately, I have been reconsidering to give Persona franchise a shot so I want to know which version should I go for Persona 3 and 4? Should I play Persona 1 and 2 or just completely skip them?

P1 and 2 have aged somewhat in the gameplay department, but have great stories and characters, so give them a try if you want. Each Persona game is independent storywise, with a reference here and there.

Persona 3 and 4 are the more popular titles. If you have a PS3, grab Persona 3 FES and Persona 4 off PSN, they're pretty cheap these days. If you have a Vita, grab Persona 4 Golden and Persona 3 Portable.

I say start with 3 or 4, get used to the series, and then go back to 1 or 2, but it's up to you.

Persona 3 FES is the better of the two Persona games you have a available to you.

All the Persona games are on PSN so you can download and play them on your PS3. Persona 3 is where the modern series starts and it will give you an idea where the series is heading with 5. Persona 3 is a little rough around the edges gameplay wise though. Persona 4 is an improvement in almost every way but there are arguments that Persona 3's story is better. I'd say start with 3 and if you are annoyed by the gameplay there is no shame is doing Persona 4. Just keep in mind that if you start with 4 that it will be hard to go back to the gameplay of 3

The story plays a large part however the game is a turn based RPG.

Naw, it's a full-fledged RPG set in modern Japan mixed with a bit of dating sim elements.

It's very unique though. P3 and particularly 4 are widely regarded as the best JRPGs of the past era.

Persona 1 and 2 (Both parts of 2) are pretty much your typical JRPGs with demons. Think of them as more mature Pokémon games. As for Persona 3 and 4 they are basically the same thing but with social elements added like hanging out with your in-game friends and things like that.

Persona 1 and 2 are both pretty dated in my opinion. But I highly recommend playing Persona 3 and 4, everyone I have recommended them to have loved those games immensly.

Thanks for the responses guys will definitely be picking this up then. Should I grab the older Persona games for continuity purposes or would I be safe diving in at V?

Everyone assumed the main Persona's name to be Joker, but since that name showed up on the shop screen, what if that's the Protagonist's nickname? No more Senpai or Leader, but like some sort of codename?
It even fits in with the whole phantom thief motif, maybe it's his calling card!

Hardcore JRPG + Dating Simulator + Best characters and writing ever!!!

Can't stress this enough. JRPGs tend to have embarassing writing but Persona 3 and 4 have some of the best writing in the business. I can honestly say these two games have the best casts in any game I've ever played. You get attached to some characters just because they're written so insanely well and multi-facetted.

Also, yeah it's kinda hardcore. Persona 3 is tougher than virtually any Square RPG. P4 was quite a bit easier. I hope they stick with the P3 difficulty.

Most we have for a release date is after P4D I'm guessing. That's out June 25.
P4D first-print copies of the game include a Persona 5 Special Movie Blu-ray disc, which contains special video of the game.

What the fuck lol. This is not what I expected. But it looks great.

Dungeons look a lot better and it's nice we're fighting HD DEMONS now. This means we can fight Lucifer or Metatron if they put in those fights. Shit yeah. Platforming and dashing are nice additions.

Character design is OK. The game looks amazingly stylish though.

Igor back is cool considering people were saying he wouldn't due to his VA passing away.

I would skip 1 and 2, they are nothing alike what the series is now and they really didn't age that well.

Persona 3 - you can choose between P3FES on PS3 or P3P on PSP, whilst I prefer the portable version for the extra content, it does limit some things like exploration, so you should go with FES for the original experience.

Persona 4 - Play Golden on Vita, great remake.

It's a message from Hashino and the dev team to fans. He talks about how Persona 5's main influences are School Juvenile fiction and Picaresque novels. Unlike previous Persona games where the players were clearly a team on the side of "good" going after a bad guy, this time they're trying for something a little different. The story is about high school students chasing after their own interpretation of "justice" after an unexpected incident. He hopes fans will enjoy the enhanced graphics and sound in the new entry as well as party members who might be a little more ill-mannered than before.

Juvenile teens? Doing "justice" their own way? cat burglars?!?! Sounds like my type of crowd. I hope there's less of "my friends are my power" type of stuff.
