Considering that the Persona series from 3 onwards was never a series focused on graphics, this already looks to be a massive step up from P4.

Basically, I suspect anyone here expressing their excitement over P5 is not expecting a game with cutting edge graphics.

P1 and 2 have aged somewhat in the gameplay department, but have great stories and characters, so give them a try if you want. Each Persona game is independent storywise, with a reference here and there.

Persona 3 and 4 are the more popular titles. If you have a PS3, grab Persona 3 FES and Persona 4 off PSN, they're pretty cheap these days. If you have a Vita, grab Persona 4 Golden and Persona 3 Portable.

I say start with 3 or 4, get used to the series, and then go back to 1 or 2, but it's up to you.

I would skip 1 and 2, they are nothing alike what the series is now and they really didn't age that well.

Persona 3 - you can choose between P3FES on PS3 or P3P on PSP, whilst I prefer the portable version for the extra content, it does limit some things like exploration, so you should go with FES for the original experience.

Persona 4 - Play Golden on Vita, great remake.

No real reason. They just look similar, so I was pretty much joking. Lisa was just a hell of a lot of fun, was a deceptively deep character, and the best LI option in the game. She was basically the daughter of an american Japanophile, didn't speak English well, and had a mad on for Kung-fu films. Rise was originally modeled off of her, though they changed that character a lot so outside of them both being idols (sorta) not much stuck around.

I always thought they modelled Chie of Lisa, Chie is practically Lisa v2.

According to the trailer it seems the 7 deadly sins will be a main theme of the game and like others already said there's a great chance each playable character will personify (personnaaa) a sin .
And P4 had 7 playable characters too, seems to match.

That and frankly it's an incredible-looking fucking game. Not on a technical level - obviously some AA would be nice - but it's definitely in Wind Waker territory where the art style and animation are too transcendent for anyone to care.

Comparing to the previous games it's a huge step though, having Catherine level graphics for a full length Persona game is already exceeding my expectations. I absolutely love the style.

Why? They look like Catherine's graphics, which IMO were fantastic. Right up there with Valkyria Chronicles in how enjoyable and animated the game felt.
