The Order 1886 | Impressions Thread of not shooting the messenger.

Just finished the game. Took about 10 hours on medium. A friend also took around the same time, so I think that's typical if you take your time. Only difficulty came when they threw like a dozen soldiers at you, or when those grenade lobbers showed up, forcing you to abandon your cover.

Gameplay wise I'd say it's competent, the Blacklight thing was nice although I rarely remembered to use it. QTEs weren't too bad. Aside from the RE4-like melee fights, they only show up like 5 or 6 times in the entire game. Even the stealth sections were okay, although having to time your triangle press to take out an enemy from behind felt unnecessary.

Had some weird glitches happen, such as the weapons menu not showing up sometimes, or some weapons disappearing, and one time an enemy was just standing around despite my being mere meters away. Very infrequent, though.

The game will be enjoyed mainly for its presentation, and it excels there. Really amazing attention to detail. And unique setting, too. Too bad the story seems to abruptly end.

I enjoyed my experience with the game, but I don't think I'll return to it. The game doesn't even tell you what collectables you've missed on which chapter, and you can't skip cut-scenes.

What difficulty would you recommend to new players? Another gaffer who beat it early said he thought rolling through on hard your first time would be the way to go. I guess it depends on what you're looking to get out of it.

Well, there an "The Armoury" option in the in-game menu that is grayed-out, even after having finished the game. Maybe you need to finish the game on hard to unlock it?

I think in The Armoury you can enable the preorder DLCs.

Took me 7-8 hours to complete the game on medium difficulty.

This is why I probably won't buy it until it hits $40. I'm big on getting everything when I dig into a game, but if I miss something and it doesn't even tell me where I missed it, or I can't go back to get it that's just plain annoying.

Also I understand not being skippable on the first play, but playing again and you still can't skip cut scenes? That's just plain dumb and ensures I'll only play it once.

Edit: Aaaand you can't even pause the cutscenes I've read? I don't know what they were thinking.

My 'sob story' is I'll not get it at all as I'm on XB1 and have stupid real life things when I need to take care of before I can get a PS4... who would have thought a new born baby and a broken boiler could get in the way of your gaming... DAMN YOU REAL LIFE! I will be living my 'Order' experience through Gaf for the near future lol!

I'm sure you'll be able to play it sooner or later. Maybe when the generation is ending, you can get a PS4 at a lower price and enjoy all the games you missed. There's something satisfying from waiting and getting to play many games you always wanted to play, one after the other.

Did I make you feel better?

;)

Massive downgrade. Still looks good.

Very true, it would be pretty cool to do that actually, jump waste deep into a bunch of epic games. Damn now I gotta avoid spoilers!

ah i see. Still clothes details aren't the same.

Because the shots used in this comparison are compressed and blurry to hell and back. I can't believe you can't realise that lol.

Unless of course you're referring to the change in outfits….

I would not be surprised if they later patched in the ability to skip cutscenes, if technically feasible. It might just be that they didn't want impatient critics and first adapters skipping the storytelling / atmospheric bits, since they seem to be such a significant strong point for the game.

Or then it's a technical issue, maybe it's not simple to execute with how they've blended cutscenes and gameplay.

They probably view it in a similar light to skipping a combat scenario. The cutscenes constitute an amount of the 'game content', this being a cinematic experience after all.

I do think not having some kind of 'Arcade Mode', like in Max Payne 3, that shifts you from combat scenario to combat scenario without the cutscenes in-between (even if they need loading screens) is a missed opportunity.

My friend George finished it and I'll paraphrase his 'review':

- Game is slow to begin with, introduces the controls
- Visuals are impeccable, if slightly soft
- Sound design impressive, guns sound meaty
- Normal is somewhat 'easy', AI isn't particularly aggressive or smart unless you sit and do nothing
- Story was so-so, voice acting good if a little over-the-top
- Some of the QTEs are out of place and kill the pacing
- Playtime was just over 5 hours

I asked him for a score, he said 7/10. Main complaint was story and lack of innovation in the 'cover-based shooter' genre.

I can ask him something more specific if required.

Ahhh yes, George, but ofcourse if George says so then by George 5hrs it must be then. Thank you George. ... :\

bout the same, completed it on normal in around 7 hours, died a bunch of times too.

I would say it's like an ok movie, plot is very by the numbers, plot "twists" are the exact same ones you would expect. Get it when it's around 20$ to get the most bang for your buck. And it's an easy single run Platinum as long as you collect all the junk along the way, no difficulty trophies or replayability ones.

That is really odd. All cutscenes should be skippable in this day and age. Especially if there are so many. Heck, MGS games have an insane amount of cutscenes and those are skippable. It's like the dev doesn't realize people sometimes just want to (re)play the game and just play the game sections only.

A very well worded but vague sounding impression. I suppose that's point of an impression, but then I would argue posts like these are borderline pointless. At least when worded in a way that gives so few concrete facts when it comes to the actual gameplay part of the game.

That being said, again very well worded and I am interested to see all the different props, sets, and other authentic things RAD has put into the game. If things look as good as they have been promoted, and as good as you have described, it'll be a treat for the eyes and art design junkies at least. (Which I am definitely one of).

You can pause the cutscenes. In fact I've done it a number of times because to adjust the gamma, since some scenes are too dark, while others are fine, and would look washed out if I raised the gamma any more. So I was playing around with the gamma throughout the game.

Too right, even the first MGS allowed it's cutscenes and codecs to be skipped.

Unless a game is using cutscenes to hide loadtimes they should always, always, always be skippable and even if they are used to hide loading screens as soon as the next portion of the game is loaded they should still be able to be skipped.

Medium was never a cakewalk, but I think going with hard would not be a bad idea. Aside from two encounters (one towards the end of the game) I didn't die too much, but never was not on my guard.
