The Order 1886 | Impressions Thread of not shooting the messenger.

Okay I'm two hours in:

Pros:

-Game is incredibly gorgeous, everything is highly detailed, from the environments, down to the clothing and objects in the world.
-The 4 knights are really well acted and written. The brief little cutscenes for small things like showing Gallahad crouching behind cover, or planning a sneak attack with your partner, really work (I realise now) because they keep you feeling like you're in a movie
-The controls and guns feel perfect
-If you've watched the long gameplay demo, the game feels like that so far. Once you're past the slow intro portion, everything moves along at a brisk pace and you don't want to stop playing or the game to end.
-THe knights' uniforms are really cool, particularly how they vary for different ranks

Cons:

-You can't switch shoulder views (left to right)
-During cutscenes, there's a slight stiffness in the characters' eyes. It's particularly noticeable in Igraine to me, for some reason, and also because the voice acting is so natural that it stands out.
To switch shoulders you have to go into options and turn camera bias on. Then use touchpad to switch shoulders.

Oh and thanks for the impressions.

Enable camera bias in the settings for shoulder switch. It's off by default.

That's one con out the window baby. #Boom!

Why would they turn that off by default?

The community manager explained that, on testing, many people switched shoulders by accident and had a hard time switching back. Some of them didn't even know what the hell happened, irrc.

That last part might be me talking out of my ass.

Stupidly you have to set shoulder view (oddly called 'camera bias') in the options.

Also, I've noticed the Igraine 'eyes' thing as well. I think when it looks so perfect, for the most part, imperfections stand out - there's a been a few animation/cinematic switch glitches for me so far (Galahad spinning on the spot after talking to a prostitute was pretty funny - gah! fuck, I just remembered the Share button! going to see if I still have it). This game is everything I wanted though (I knew what it was going to get) and I've played for a couple of hours so far, and I love it.

Hmmm, I received 2 "yes" replies and your "no". I want your answer to be the right one!

A 21:9 display is likely to have an option of upscaling a 1920x1080 picture to make it fill the entire screen by cutting off its top and bottom part. This way you may certainly get rid of the letterboxing but you have to understand that you will essentially be upscaling a 1920x800 image to a 2560x1080 display.

I guess you can switch shoulder when shooting but not when walking?

You can shoulder switch any time.

Been playing the game for 5 hours (beginning of chapter 4 now) and here some early impressions,

Graphics - the new king has arrived, can't wait for photomode.

I love the punch of the guns, sounds, just overall pretty solid and satisfying gunplay. I like the little details when you are using your guns (ex. I noticed when using the sniper the strap is swinging realistically especially when you are using your sniper and going from cover to cover)

For me it's type of game where once you start it's kinda hard to stop because you want to know what happens next in the story or you want to kill more bad guys because the guns are very satisfying to use. I like how you can see the effect of the thermite rifle burning bodies. So really looking forward to enjoy more of the game tomorrow.

So I would say the avg gaf impressions if you had to put a score to it would be in the 8-9 range.

It would be pretty funny if this scored the same as UC1 - 88

its weird they made switch shoulder to touch pad, you think for performance reasons they would have it as clicking in the right stick or something

I don't think it will resonate that well with critics.

Its single player only and it is short
No exp leveling stuff etc
Not innovative or no nextgen gameplay.

I am expecting same score as wolfestine tno

Whaaaa? I'm like 2 hours in if that and I'm on chapter 3. Is it that much longer than the others? Hell, chapter 2 was just
a cutscene and some walking around.
Umm, Chapter wasn't just
a cutscene and some walking around. There was a long ass shooting sequence. Maybe because I played on hard and died a couple times during it, but they were waves of enemies that I actually thought was annoying.

Edit:
Xaero Gravity was correct. I was combining Chapter 2 and 3 by mistake.

+ Best looking game I've ever played. Chapter 3 spoiler
The interior of Tesla's laboratory especially looks insane, like real life.
+ Some have said the start is slow. I kinda disagree. 10 minutes in and you're sent right into action. I think the pacing thus far (I'm at chapter 4) is good and smooth.
+ Gun play feels great, there's a good variation to weapons.
+ Voice acting is outstanding and the story thus far is interesting.
+ The atmosphere is really good, at least take SOME time to soak it in.

- Black bars are annoying
- Little variation thus far in gameplay. Cutscenes > action scenes with regular cover/shooting gameplay. Rinse and repeat.
- The game doesn't track what collectibles you've already found which, in combination with unskippable cut scenes, can become quite annoying for some.
- Pretty easy thus far on hard. Enemy AI isn't very smart. Quite easy to land head shots.

I'm really having a hard time understanding the hype for this game. It seems to basically be about the graphics and little else. The story looks ok, but come on, this isn't Citizen Kane, and we all know it. No EXP, no leveling, short campaign. Other than better but totally familiar gameplay, this is sounding a lot like Ryse . . .

Have you read the impressions in this thread?
Whats up with the Citizen Kane referrence? Are you joking?

Actually it's quite intuitive, hitting the left/right side of the pad 'moves' the character to the left/right respectively.

I just got onto Chapter 5 and thought I would collect and congregate my impressions:

+ Graphics have set a new bar (though they were already aiming for a cinematic experience but it all really blends well).

+ Gameplay is fun, liked the fast paced combat in the starting chapters, straight out of a movie.

+ Always loved Victorian type settings with half-breed type of stuffs, good to see it infused with RAD's imagination of that era's modern weaponry.

+ OST sound is pretty good with the atmosphere.

+ LOVE the inspect mode.

= Animations are solid although do tend to be weird at times.

= VA could be better, especially Igraine's VA.

- Cover system glitched out at a s ection or two for me, perhaps was switched off? Doesn't make sense though.

- The main characters are so well detailed and get most of the processing power that sometimes the surroundings look fake and the characters feel like imposed onto a backdrop.

- A.I leaves a lot to be desired.

- The starting was WAY too slow (QTE fest - CUTSCENE - QTE FEST- WALK HERE etc). Perhaps building momentum?

- Lot less freedom at some sections when choosing a weapon/wanting to change to another weapon.

So far I'm enjoying it and if I were to give it a score right about now it would be:

9/10 for graphics
7/10 for gameplay
8/10 for sound
7/10 for story (so far)

Read people's impressions. All will be made clear to you.

Graphics, Art Direction, and storytelling. This is what I think the appeal is, or at least what appeals to me. Nothing wrong with not seeing the appeal of the game nor will I try to force feed you something you don't care for.

I brought up some similar points when titanfall was about to release and people's heads were exploding because I didn't see the appeal of yet another COD-like fps. I still don't get why there was so much hype for what seemed like an average, to above average shooter

edit: I forgot to mention lycans and crazy weapons.

Oh well, you hit most of the negatives in one post (and nobody said it was Citizen Kane so WTF was that?).

You know, we shouldn't really get wound up about posts on a videogame forum, but this kind of shit - in an impressions thread for those who have played it (have you played it?) is getting real tiresome. Especially when posters bimble into the thread this late in the game and spout the same old rubbish.

Take out that rpg stuff out of my Order.

I feel like if you actually read the impressions you would understand what people are excited for.

Ok well sorry I actually have a job and haven't had time to read 234324 pages of impressions :p

Seriously, part of my resistance is the desire not to spend another $60 on a game when I just bought Evolve and have BB, SotFS and W3 coming up.

But, as usual, GAF has peaked my interest, and now I'll be watching the review scores and impressions closely to see if I need to come along for the ride. Cantankerous or not, this is why I love you guys . . .
