Damn... I don't know if I can wait until fall. I might just get a Z3 for cheap and upgrade again when the Z5 comes out the following year. I'm sure that will still feel like a huge upgrade over my S3.

This whole event was a huge disappointment for me. I was ready for the S6 to be my next phone. The leaked photos had me completely on board, but now they lost me with everything else. I'd like to know what they were thinking during board room meetings...
 
Unless the Note 5 is radically different, I can't wait to upgrade to a Note 4 this year. My HTC One M7 has had it...battery is ass and the camera is a purple mess...never buying HTC again.

I need that replaceable battery and SD card slot and I fear the Note 5 will follow the trend of these S6 devices unfortunately. By the time I can upgrade in September, that Note 5 will be close to release and if it isn't what I want that Note 4 will probably be $100 less as well.

Note4 Edge imo is very prone to drop.

I wonder how the dual edge will feel in hands.

Furthermore, you cant paste a tempered glass screen protector now. And i thought Iphone curve was bad with tempered glass.

This curve thing imo is gimmicky, just like LG Flex...

What was a huge disappointment other than removable battery/SD card?
 
I watched without gaf. I liked it. It looks nice has everything you need. I did not know about sd card but that is the only thing i will miss.
 
i think s6 edge will flop. they havnt shown why paying extra will benefit u in any real way, like wtf is the point to curved display? BUT its a risk worth taking. if it takes off then the s7 will only come in curved display

the s6 will sell good, its risky removing sd + removable battery but those power users will probably stick to their phones and wait till sammy announces s7 before they move on to something else.

if iphone can sell so much without removable battery/sd card than why not s6? thats sammy logic behind this i reckon.

To be honest I forgot the S5 had waterproofing since I've been on the Note 3 for a while but I guess that is unfortunate. The huge surprise for me was the DDR 4. I wasn't aware they were going for that.

There are some cool features like the color flashing when the phone is face down for notifications, but yeah they didn't really add enough functionality at least in the presentation to differentiate.

while i don't use a screen protector of any kind myself, i agree with you. - curved glass fronts on phones are not a desirable feature.

because the iPhone 6 has a slight curve to the glass along the edge, screen protectors are cut like this:

I don't see how you could put the note edge into a case that would at least protect the edge from ever hitting the ground first.

This should be a lot better than the Note Edge. Screen protectors aren't really needed tbh.

1. I agree that the Edge will flop - the additional functionality it offers is very minimal, especially in light of a probable price premium.

2. Removable battery and MicroSD are non-issues, completely, to the vast majority of consumers. They're only "vital" to very, very, very few at this point (mostly Samsung fans on message boards by now). For example, my 6+ could last 3 days if I stretch it, and charges to full in less than 2 hours. It has 64GB of dependable, fast internal storage (doesnt drain battery like an SD does). There is absolutely no need for me to keep 100gbs of music on phone etc. Plus, I have well over 100gb of cloud storage and Google Play Music loaded with 20k songs.
 
I'm not getting either phone, but if I had to choose the Galaxy S6 would be my choice over the HTC M9. That being said I think both phones are a huge disappointment this year.

On Samsung's front they're offering a new build quality, but at the cost of features like Micro-SD, Removable Battery, and Waterproofing which doesn't make the trade off seem worth it.

While on HTC's side they basically copy/pasted the same design as last year and kept the uncomfortably huge bezels which was the weakest element of the M8. I've heard the new camera isn't that great based off some impressions which would be another step backwards.

Lack of SD card is the biggest deal breaker of the three since I'm not a fan of paying out the ass to get an extra 16 Gb. I have a lot of music and use my phone as a media player (as I'm sure a lot of people do) so no expandable memory pretty much killed any chance of me buying this phone off the bat.

Replaceable battery is more of a convenience thing since it's easier to buy a new battery than go through the warranty process of getting a new phone. While my S3 is a few years old, I've still had to replace the battery 3 times.

Waterproofing is another convenience thing for me. I'm sure using your phone in the pouring rain isn't good for it and will probably affect the warranty process when you need that new battery.

Keep in mind I don't upgrade my phone every year like some people do so I want my next phone to last me as long as possible. My S3 has lasted me 3+ years and based on what I'm seeing with the S6 I doubt it will be able to do the same.
 
I think the lack of microsd kinda makes sense when you consider that the new flash technology is a lot faster than most sd cards.

If it has good battery savings built into the chip, radio and screen the lack of removable battery isn't such a pressing issue.
 
So should I get an S6 Edge or wait for the Note 5?

Man I'm having a rough time with all of this. Can you get the Note 4 edge still?

I love my Note 4. Best phone I've ever owned. You won't regret getting it if you get one.

Smaller phones feel like toys now. I can never go back to a smaller screen.

Note 5 will undoubtedly be an improved Note 4 with S6 enhancements. It just depends if you want a bigger screen or like the S6 screen size.

Note 4 Edge is still available.

1440p is like 2.5K or something by a similar metric. I mean 1080p is essentially 2K.

Well what are the other options for flagship android phones? I'm genuinely asking.

Galaxy S6- Late spring/early summer (probably no SD card)
HTC One M9- Late spring/early summer
Motorola X 3rd gen- ????? (and even then probably no SD card)
LG G4- probably late april early may. And they have to fix some issues.

And whatever the next NEXUS phone will be probably won't be out till even later. Looks like my only options as of right now if I want to be able to listen to my music are the M9 and possibly the G4 ?(assuming they don't remove SD cards). And then it'll be a battle of what do I care about: the camera or everything else?
 
I'm thoroughly impressed with the phones. Looks like I will getting one for me and one for the wife. Did they mentioned the release date?

Samsung isn't Apple and sell good is a relative term. Will the S6/S6 Edge do iPhone 5 numbers... NO. Will the S6/S6 Edge surpass M9 sales... more than likely.

People in the market for an Android flagship are well aware of the benefits that a battery/microsd card slot brings. When they bring up the comparison sheet, these two points stick out like a sore thumb.

The S6/S6 Edge is the world's most beautiful disappointment. I expect more from Samsung because of the legit threat they're facing in China and around the world. Compete with those threatening your core business instead of Apple.

This phone is beautiful but I refuse to buy a smartphone without an SD card slot. My old LG G3 taught me an appreciation for removable batteries.

yeah i agree. for 99% of people that bought s4/s5 sd cards/removable batteries dont mean shit. if they were to be removed from note then it would be a bigger deal

I won't cry about no Micro SD card if they offer me a 64+ GB phone for the same price as the 16 GB when I bought it back in the days. And knowing how every 16 GB upgrade of memory for a phone is like another 100 fucking bucks lol

1. Is there any cloud solution you could use? Do you need THAT much media on your phone on it at the same time? Could you live with swapping it out (ie seasons of a tv show) daily? Base 32gb is nice, but given Samsung's history, anything else coming to the US is a big question mark. MicroSD cards aren't used by the vast majority given a good-sized internal storage solution, and they're slower and less reliable to boot - that's some solid reasoning for axing it when it didn't gel with the much, much improved design/build.

2. My bro's M7 is going on two years and hasn't shown much appreciable battery degradation. Keeping it topped off as much as possible will greatly lessen the amount it degrades over time. That said, I doubt it's gonna be too big a deal to get it replaced once every two years. This really shouldn't top your list of concerns, and I think you're placing too much emphasis on it tbh.

3. Nearly all phones are actually waterproof rated to a certain extent; enough to withstand brief rain or even light spills. It just isn't advertised to a ridiculous degree like Samsung did. What situations will you be using your phone beyond what I described in which it'll get drenched? Being careful eliminates most spills/toilet drops (hasn't happened to me in 4+ years). Waterproofing it likely would have had a noticeable downgrade on form factor/build materials/design. Definitely not worth keeping this from their standpoint.
 
No knocking it, as people have different priorities. But it's always so strange to me when I hear people saying they keep their phones for 3 or 4 years, and are debating what to upgrade from the iphone 4 or s3 with.

I get not upgrading every year. But every two? There's more than enough reason to upgrade typically - if for speed alone.

I keep an iPhone 4 for an MP3 player at the gym, and just the sluggishness of that drives me insane. I can't imagine using a whole phone at that speed.

the s3 is still a pretty good phone and not upgrading either saves you money or keeps you off a contract.

also, less environmental waste :P
