I know I'm going to sound elitist as fuck, but as someone who was quite annoyed with the S5 when it was first revealed (I wanted a more premium designed phone dammit), and switched to several other phones for several days (14 day money back and replacement policy ftw) before ending up settling with the S5 (lol), this is one advantage that cannot be stated enough. Simply put, AMOLED is infinitely superior to all LCD panels on other phones. The black level and contrast performance is just unbelievable really, and to me makes a huge difference to overall media consumption and viewing, especially in dark viewing conditions, where blacks on other devices basically look dark grey. The AMOLED panels on these new devices also no longer have the issues they used to have in older devices, such as a lack of brightness, inaccurate whites, or poorer pixel matrix tech.

It's sort of like comparing my Panasonic VT65 or Pioneer Kuro plasma screens with that of my Macbook Pro Retina or older Sony LCD TV display, the latter just lack the contrast punch and depth, and as a result looks considerably worse. I am dumbfounded that so many sites continue to praise the shit out of the screens on some of these other devices (mobile phones, tablets and laptops alike), because honestly LCD tech, even IPS, still leaves a lot to be desired. And for those worried about saturated colours, or inaccurate levels, Samsung has you covered there as well, with one of the different screen modes that will inevitably be closer to the 6500k standard than even Apple's offerings, but as per usual, many outlets will probably ignore this and harp on with the "over saturated colours and poor white balance" narrative.

I haven't used an Amoled screened phone since my horrible experience with the pentile screen on the Galaxy Nexus. That thing was so fucking ugly to look at, it's a good thing that the tech has come a long way. I'm really looking forward to seeing how it is on the GS6. I always hated the greyish blacks on LCD screens.

I would say Note 4 feels like the most solid Android phone on market atm though.

- Great battery
- Great display (best display on market according to displaymate)
- Premium build
- Great camera
- Good specs
- MicroSD
- S Pen
etc etc

Just seems like the phone hits all the right notes, if only the OS was stock it would've been perfect.

Snapdragon 801? Yawn.

Two variants.

One has SD801, other is insanely powerful with SD810 + 4GB LPDDR4 Memory.

- 2.0 GHz Octa-Core Snapdragon 810 Processor
- 4GB DDR4 RAM
- 5.7 Inch Quad HD Display 2560x1440p Gorilla Glass 3
- 13 MP Rear Camera With LED Flash (Sony)
- 4 MP Front Camera
- Dual SIM (Micro+Nano)
- Cat 9 LTE 450Mbps
- 64GB/128GB storage (eMMC 5.0)
- 3090 MAh Battery.

Yea, I'm sure you'll be really impressed. Screen on the S5, Galaxy Tab S etc are just fantastic, with pretty much zero draw backs. Cinema mode on the S5, and Basic mode on the tab being the most accurate.

If it wasn't for the size of the phone, I'd have already bought one by now. They were selling them in Thailand at the airport duty free when I was on holiday, they were tax free and had a further 30% one week special sale on sim free handsets. Only reason I didn't buy one is because I was expecting the Nexus 6 to be much better (pre-reveal). Sigh...

I still remember android/samsung fanboys touting the removable batteries and sd card for why android is better than iphone, and painting several scenarios to justify these 2 "features".

"What if your phone batteries malfunction now you have to send in your whole phone to repair it and you have to wait for days to get it back!!"

"Apple is greedy because they are forcing us to upgrade to an even much more expensive phone if we want more storage!! When we can easily switch to a bigger size cheap micro sd card on android!"

Good time.
Ha remember when all the android/Samsung fanboys were all "a removable battery and SD card are really great" and now they are all "why are you getting rid of removable batteries and SD cards they are really great".

Mi Note Pro is definitely my Android phone of choice.

Did you Factory Reset? It's generally a given that you should Factory Reset when going up big increments in Android OS. My S5 has been with no problems since I did it.
That's ridiculous. How was I (or even your average consumer) supposed to know that? Are there some steps you could link me to?

I think the crashing has to do with the hardware or Samsung's iteration. You need to factory reset. Lockscreen music does suck now.

Oh man I will fight Lollipop with my bare teeth if it messes with the TouchWiz music player lockscreen. That thing is beautiful. Thanks for the heads up, I will avoid this update until they fix it.

Yeah you can find some pics of the new lockscreen stufff. It's nice but like most of Material it sacrifices functionality for looks. Buttons are super small now and you can't scrub through a track anymore.

Considering my repair cost is $200 for my S5 i'm just going to get a different phone. Think GAF sold me on the Note 4, since I highly doubt the Mi note is going to come to sprint ever.

the 810 is also insanely hot. I hope they fixed that issue for the M9. I returned my nexus 9 because the K1 Denver turned it into a hotpad just using chrome.

for the buck? the one plus one.

Mi Note Pro, although I'm not sure if it's actually released yet.

I'm currently using a Oneplus One and it's pretty great (especially given the price), but it's a tad too big at 5.5" and doesn't quite have a premium feel. Best is quite subjective, all of them have pros and cons. It really depends on what you're looking for in a phone.

Nexus 6, unless you want a more compact phone, then probably Z3C.

Note 4,it's the best phone in the world period.
Erm....

From a general consumer standpoint I think the S6 Edge is going to be a huge hit. It truly looks different than any other phone out there.

I just hope Samsung stays true to their habit of making a shit ton of phone variations out there and hope some stick. So it's not out of the question that we will get variants of the S6 that goes back to plastic, removable battery, sd-card, and water-resistant. S6 Active would be a perfect candidate for this.

Damn, the design and bezel sizing is just gorgeous. Shame it's an LCD instead of AMOLED. Any idea if this will ever see a UK release, and have there been any camera samples comparing it to the S5, Note 4, iPhone 6 and Plus 6?

No UK release unfortunately. Xiaomi are very much Asia only.

I might be getting one shortly but there will certainly be some picture comparisons on the internet somewhere soon.

It is a Sony 13mp camera. f/2.0 aperture, 6 element lens, Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) coupled with 2 tone LED flash.

The actual sensor being used is the Sony 2nd gen IMX214 which is also used in the Oppo Find 7 and other flagships. What Xiaomi have done is combined the sensor with excellent software features and additional hardware to create the ultimate experience.

What does Theirry Henry have to do with the HTC?

The guy who modelled their VR headset looks surprisingly similar. Was a topic of discussion in another thread.

Specs shouldn't define the experience of using a phone. The spec-race that Android manufacturers are forced into is a terrible thing. One good example is how everybody "needs" to have a Quad-HD screen now even though the benefits of them aren't proven in relation to battery life reduction.

Not to mention the iPhone 6 is a pretty high-end device. I'd say the only thing really holding it down is the 1GB of RAM, but a lot of elements into it (Camera and CPU) are top-notch.
The drive-by poster has since no response to you. Don't feed him more.

Different strokes for different folks. Which is one of the things I like about having a selection of different devices to choose from.

I went with the Note 4 just a few days ago because it met all my criteria for a good phone: removable battery, microsd card slot, and great battery life. So many phones these days only have 2/3 of those which sucks for me, and since I knew the S6 wasn't going to have a removable battery I decided to just go with the Note 4.

But other people don't need the removable battery, are fine with 32-64GB internal storage, want a smaller size phone, or want a different software experience from Samsung. And there are great phone options out there for whatever it is you're looking for.

I've read their articles and I think they offer too little emphasis and too much leeway regarding contrast and black levels. Even their own readings, which pit the iPhone 6 at 0.36 cd/m2 show that the device whilst decent in that respect compared to other devices, is still lacking a great deal compared to AMOLED (0 cd/m2). In the HDTV Test world, a 0.36 cd/m2 difference would be considered massive.

I also have no idea if the iPhone 6 tested by Anand was sent by Apple and specifically calibrated, but thankfully I've compared a retail iPhone 6 with my S5, as well as my plasma's (which are both ISF calibrated, even my monitors and laptops are Spyder calibrated), with the same test images, videos etc, so I don't need to rely on someone else's opinion to know that Apple's devices are left wanting in terms of black levels and contrast, nor that the iPhone 6 (the one I tested) veered too much on the blueish side with respect to overall white balance.

There are luckily other scientific studies and analysis on the screen tech with these different devices.

Examples.

The use of the Exynos processor is really going to allow Samsung's semi conductor business to grow.

Was not expecting them to use the 14nm manufacturing process so quickly.

People shitting on 8MP are delirious. My Rebel XT from 2005 is 8MP and takes better shots than any phone. Give me bigger sensors any day over noise producing megapixels.

Anyone know if there's another Cyanogen phone coming out (like the One Plus) for this next generation?

As much as I'm enjoying my Note 3, there's no way I'm going to stick with Samsung if they're going to try to squeeze out the same level of ridiculous profits as Apple.

right? if i'm gonna be milked, might as well let Apple slam their cash vacuums against my udders

Specs after my own heart. No chance this is coming to NA huh?

People think bigger numbers are better. It's never gonna change.

I bought a nice Sony mirrorless camera last year, and it was "only" 16 mpix. But the picture quality... so good.

Don't have an upgrade until Aug/Sept so plenty of time to see how this and the M9 review and also for XDA to unlock and root them (I'm on VZW...). Currently have a M7 so I'm ready for something new.

About Micro SD card slot, can't any of the case or battery pack case manufacturers produce a case that has a Micro SD card slot?

The Galaxy Nexus had such a strange AMOLED screen. The colours don't pop like you expect them to.
