Of course, the main characters don't have the powers of their crests at this point. They gave them up to free the Four Holy Beasts between Adventure and 02.

I'd like them all to show up in some form. Daisuke gets some hate from people, but he matured a lot over 02. I'd like for Daisuke, Ken, Miyako and Iori to all get at least something. 02 wasn't the best show, but there's room for the characters to be used.

There is no turning point for any character in 02 except for Ken (and secretly Iori).

The only difference between start-of-season Daisuke vs. end-of-season Daisuke is that he isn't in puppy love with Hikari anymore.

Do people really hate 02 that much that they think parts of it will be ignored in Tri?

Most just hoped the epilogue would be ignored.

And 02 is an awful season, but I don't want to start ranting again so I'll leave it at that.

Thats some nonsense that I hated even when I was a kid. It was some lame story-line to make the original cast weak, and have the 02 trio save the day.

Did they forget what happened at the end of Adventure? The crests were in them all along.

Ken and Iori are the only ones who have a major character arc in 02, but Daisuke does mature. Not so much in terms of him growing to a great extent, but can you imagine the Daisuke of the early episodes putting such complete faith in Ken and actually seeking him out to try and help the group out?

He doesn't necessarily have any major development, but he mellows out a fair bit (see also the way his relationship with Takeru changes over the series). I think he matures even if he doesn't really grow. He's still basically the same guy, but he's a more mature version of that guy.

Yes. Besides Takeru (and Willis), Daisuke is a good guy to everyone he meets. I think early Daisuke would be just as welcoming to Ken.

He's nicer to Takeru because he's not obsessed with Hikari anymore. The only reason he didn't like him was because of competition.

He is a little mellower, but I attribute that to Ken being around to balance him more than anything else.

Yeah, the whole "you had the power inside of you all along" was sort of a thing at the end of Adventure.

What part was part 2?

Was it when they came back to the real world while fighting that gold mecha monkey dude? The MC meets his sister and then dude the 4th forms? The human looking digivolves? And then there's a nuke or something?

Help me out I literally haven't touched digimon since I was like 10 like 15 years ago, and I only ever watched the first set, was my first 'anime' really.

02 was the one with:
  • Armor digivolving/Digi-eggs of Courage, Hope, etc.
  • Ken/Digimon Emperor
  • Davis, Yolei, Cody
  • Veemon, Hawkmon, Armadillomon, Wormmon
  • DNA Digivolving (Paildramon, Imperialdramon, Silphymon, etc.)
  • Blackwargreymon

If you have Netflix, I recommend checking them out again... in Japanese w/subs.

The sub aged waaaay better than the dub.

Meh, I still disagree (mostly) here, at least in regards to series 1. I also prefer other subs to the official netflix subs for the first series. Series 2 however, there isn't much choice apart from Netflix which has it's fair share of issues including using both the JP and English names for things from episode to episode. It felt like there were several translators translating it within their own little bubbles.

That said, fun fact: The episode where Wizarmon tells Joe/Takeru that Hikari is the 8th child, Joe is all "Light is the 8th child" (because Hikari = light in Japanese) and it took a few seconds for it to register with Joe what Wizarmon was talking about.

It wasn't an easy joke to localize in English of course but I did chuckle a little at it when I watched the JP version.

Also my favourite episode in BOTH languages is Angewomon's Evolution for obvious reasons. After I got the BD set, it was the second episode I went to (after the first episode when I was checking the quality of it)

I'd argue BlackWargreymon, too, but
dying to Vamdemon at the end of his arc just seemed as rushed as Vamdemon's inclusion, itself.

But anyway, Daisuke actually got some nice character development in the radio dramas. Especially "Doors to Summer" (which could easily be described as the incident when he finally got over Hikari).

But you wouldn't know it, because for whatever reason, they didn't fit such development in the actual series. The writers for the last half of 02 really dropped the ball (and that's with me being the BlackWargreymon fan I am).

That said, I really do hope the 02 kids find a way in, some how. Or at least just Ken and Daisuke, because why would Hikari and Takeru be saddled with Miyako and Iori again, unless they REALLY had no choice as far as Evolution options go?

*nods*

Trust me, if you watch the dub, the jokes might cause you to roll your eyes right out of your head if you aren't ready to handle them.

The sub aged waaaay better than the dub.

The original hasn't even aged at all. It's still just as good as it was 15 years ago (and honestly, the dub was always a steaming piece of shit even back in 99/2000).

The Netflix subs aren't great, but they're still a much better alternative to that dub (which let's all try and pretend didn't exist). I just wish they were more consistent with their terminology.

It differs from person to person of course, but I've found that some people go back to Digimon and end up hating it because of the 90's dialogue and bad jokes in the localization. They write it off as a kid's show that was worse than they remember. It's harder to write off the sub where things are handled more seriously (even though the Netflix subs aren't the best).

I still nostalgically like the dub, though, bad jokes and all.

I don't mind watching it even now though I do have some fun poking fun at some of the english (and sometimes Japanese dialogue though it's harder to do that than the dub I'll admit).

I do wonder how Hikarigaoka got changed to Highton View Terrance when everything else was kept (in terms of Japanese place names. Narima, Odaiba, Tokyo Tower, etc)

Probably pronunciation issues though I think it's not too hard to pronounce but whatever. Or maybe lip sync issues with the dialogue.

Been doing a marathon of the original and 02 before tri. The last time I watched it, was the sub so I did the dub again. Im in the 2nd half of 02. The puns man... they will forever haunt my dreams.

I should look at the radio dramas sometime. I have no clue what goes on in any of them and apparently some are pretty good.

Miyako and Iori were really written into a corner as far as future installments go. They have no use, not even as a way to digivolve to Ultimate/Mega.

Maybe it's too long of a foreign word or something? I can see younger children having trouble with it.

The yellowish subtitles combined with the bright image quality made the Netflix subtitles unreadable to me. :(

I hope this season answers the most important question of all: Is Matt ever going to stop being a tryhard egdelord?

Daww, that recent image is nice!
And I suppose the freak outs over Agumon's weird proportions was just how he was drawn for that promotional art. He (and all the other monsters) seem to be more or less the same in their design.

His voice took some getting used to for me, since it was so different Sakamoto's Agumon, but I thought it worked for that version.
No he didn't. Outside of Ken, none of them did.

They should be ignored, this is the original cast's time to shine, not those losers.

Here's a WIP Wallpaper I'm doing. The resolution is huge so give it a bit to load!

What it looks like on the desktop.

And I have finally changed my desktop image thanks to this :D

I have to use fill instead of stretch (since stretch makes it look bad) but I can't see Palmon :(

Still it looks so good regardless that I'm keeping it like this now :D

Well, it is a wip so I aim to make it better cus there are a lot of imperfections. What resolution is your PC outputting? Try scaled output.

Scaled output? Where is that?

It's set to 1080p though in the resolution/personal display setting anyway. (Windows 8 btw)

Not complaining regardless though. I am glad to have it on my desktop, it looks so pretty <3

Speaking of which, wasn't Matt's crest/trait ironic compared to everyone else's? Seem to recall he was moody and introverted a lot of the time.

His trait was also from before with the incident at Hikarigaoka/Highton View Terrace before his parents divorced. That can change a guy.

If you take it more as "loyalty" than "friendliness", it fits him better (late season Matt notwithstanding).

Daisuke's personality fits more with what someone would expect Friendship to be.

This poster looks fantastic. I wonder if they are ignoring 02. Since they haven't incorporated those chosen in the promo at all, and Mimi should be in NY. Whatever the case, I'm really hyped for the new potential evos for the digimon.

Marketing, using nostalgia to promote the new series. 02 will probably be in it but the kids and stuff from it will likely not be the main focus.

You might call me a blasphemer but the poster doesn't evoke a strong feeling of nostalgia for me, instead it looks like something fresh and new which gets me slightly more excited.

Something that kinda bugs me is how they're gonna pull that off exactly. Like I'm imagining TK and Kari saying "oh hey guys we're gonna go on a super cool neato adventure with our digimon pals, but you can't come because uhh.. reasons. bye now!"

Obviously it won't happen like that lol, but I don't want it to be something contrived. Not that I want the 02 kids to tag along (except maybe Ken), but just curious how that will turn out.

No different from having sudden reasons for the original kids not being able to go with the 02 kids even though they can when there is a reason for them to (ie their Digimon are in trouble).

It's just like "Yeah, sure, go and do your thing and call us if you have any trouble"

We'll find out how they handle it when the series starts.

Ok guys, after seeing the new poster I'm hyped and am looking to watch the first adventure series again in preparation.

So here's my question, I'm well aware that the dub is lame in terms of puns and jokes but I don't mind that (nostalgia goggles) and I have a fondness for the dub cast so no problems there either.
But am I really missing out on that much from the JP sub? Is the viewing experience that significantly different to the point that I'd get something more from it?

Easy, they move to different schools.

It takes itself much more seriously, and the voice actors are superb. It also has a GOAT OST.

When does this start?

Spring is all we know so far.

It's a different experience, hell if you have time watch both versions and see how you feel (you can compare them a lot easier with back-to-back viewings lol).

Love the dub but one of the biggest things you will miss is not hearing the OST (including the Op/Insert of Brave Heart/Butterfly) which you may want to hear in preparation for the new series assuming you're going to watch it subbed.

Also thanks to the JP version, I learned that "I wish" was sang by Mimi's VA which she also sang in that episode with Shogungekomon. She has a great voice :D

When does this start?

99.99% sure it will air at the start of April.

Pretty much every Digimon ending song as been sung by Maeda Ai, Mimi's VA. She and Koji Wada have been involved from the beginning, and have stuck for pretty much every season.

I love it.

You're missing out on quite a bit.

For starters, the OST for the original version is incredible. It does a really great job at building the mood throughout the whole series, with a lot of very memorable tracks (as well as some great vocal pieces). Additionally, the Japanese version takes itself a lot more seriously than the dubbed version does. Not just in terms of the dub having lame puns, but there are many scenes which were played very seriously originally and are filled with jokes in the dub. Beyond that, the characters are pretty different. Pretty much all of the characters were altered in the English version. Mimi was the one who was butchered the most (god, I'm still mad about that), but most of the characters are changed quite a bit by the dub, and the relationships between the characters are also altered in some key places.

That's in addition to all of the censorship and weird changes the dub made on a per episode basis. It's fundamentally a completely different show that just happens to share mostly the same animation.

I love it.

She hasn't sung a solo ending since Tamers, though (although Tri should definitely change that). I was disappointed that she didn't sing any songs for Savers or Xros Wars.

But yeah, her and Wada Kouji basically are Digimon music. Their music has been a major part of my life for 15 years at this point. Digimon has always been blessed with some great vocal pieces.
