Free to Play Halo Online (Saber, H3 eng) announced, only for Russia [First Info]

The market's are still different regardless. That doesn't necessarily have to mean that we're less receptive to F2P... rather we're more receptive to a full price packaged version of the game. Maybe releasing a competent F2P version of Halo for PC over here would heavily cannibalise the already paying audience, with not enough of those being whales to make all for all those that used to put down $60, but are now just playing it for free. In a market where those packaged sales are practically non-existent, releasing the F2P version makes a lot more sense.

EDIT: Goddamnit... I need to start using less words.

There aren't many Xbox One's in Russia (as stated by Stinkles) and Russia is a big place for the F2P market. They play more F2P than consoles.

The West already own a large amount of Xbox One's will be be picking up Halo 5.

It just makes more sense to launch in Russia first than in multiple territories first.

OK, next questions.
How about PC F2P market?
I think there are enough people who own a gaming PC but not a XB1, and interested in Halo. Halo 5 isn't available for PC, right? (at least for now, who knows).

The territory is the most important detail here. Microsoft looked at the numbers in Russia and saw that practically no one buys consoles, especially not Xbone, so it makes sense to put this out there. In North America or Western Europe/UK, there would be some sales lost on Halo 5 and Xbone's if they put this out there, or at least that might be their thinking.

They may still put this out in other territories, but I would assume Asia would get touched first, because they don't buy Xbone's either, NA and EU West are probably the last ones.

Same thing really. How many people that'd buy Halo on Xbox wouldn't with the existence of a free PC version? Maybe the PC only guys don't cover that. Especially as selling someone an Xbox allows you to sell them a Live sub to play online, and nets you a cut of any other games they may buy. Maybe if they didn't need an Xbox for Halo, they'd just get a PS4 instead, and just play the new free Halo. Chances are they'd have more friends to play with on a F2P version anyway.

If tradeoffs weren't a consideration, then you may as well port everything to every platform.. or even just make every game F2P.

Lol, what an absolute joke. You know it's a sad day for Halo fans and PC gamers when Halo's triumphant return to PC comes in the form of a free-to-play multiplayer-only shooter exclusive to Russia of all places. Seriously? This is what MS and 343 decides to do with one of (if not their most), highly revered franchises of all time? Really?

It's not like people here in the west have been begging for PC ports of the recent Halo games for FUCKING YEARS!!! Lol, but who am I kinding, given how MS and 343 have already run the franchise straight into the ground I guess I can't say I'm surprised. Game probably won't even work on launch anyway, if 343 can't get a Halo game to work on an Xbox what reason do we have to think some random Russian dev will be able to get one working on PC ?

Good job MS & 343, seriously good job.

But isn't it just beta testing?...

The reactions here. So terrible.

It's an experimental side-project launched in a country known for the precise target audience this project was conceived in mind of. It's not a fuck you to non-Russian PC gamers. It's not a fuck you console owners. It's an experiment that is currently not for you, which is ok, believe it or not. Stop raging you don't get it. Stop raging it's not what you want, because it's not supposed to be.
They know as well as everyone knows the sky is blue that the West would eat this up. Yet they only want us on a xbox one and a controller, forcing us to pay a monthly sub too.

Yep.

I don't think there's any doubt that a F2P Halo on PC could suck away console sales from people who really just treat their Xbox as their Halo box (although yeah, I doubt the numbered sequels and storyline stuff will be jumping to PC anytime soon at this point, even with MS' new "Windows everywhere" push.)

The question is would a PC Halo be enough to lure in those "master race" people who talk crap about Halo because it's not for their platform, and if this latter group is larger than the former.

When it launches, someone needs to figure out how to be able to play/try it outside of Russia. There is no way I could handle not being able to at least try an official Halo game, a shooter nonetheless, while others can.

Just what the fuck is going on during meetings at 343i, someone sneak a camera in there, the drugs being passed around must be wild.

"Seeing as how we continue to struggle to make a good Halo game, let's at least make one that is profitable."

Were reactions this stupid when Activision announced a Free 2 Play Call of Duty?

This is a move meant to get money out of non-traditional markets where a $60 retail product won't sell. It's also highly likely to be an attempt at monetizing old unused assets, since this will likely just be a collection of old multiplayer maps from previous Halo games.

No. It just sort of came and went.

I agree 100% with this.

think of it this way, it a totally different kind of fps, it whole design and philosophy is meant to be completely different. Its not a main title its an off shoot and if targeting a completely different audience. F2p game are completely different breed then other game. Heck cod online is a compeletly different game then the core cod franchise. Sure it has it lore connections. But no one should be expecting them to play like the core franchise. Its like expecting halo wars or spartan strike to play the same they can't they are completely different games.

Just like 343(Bungie) produced halo wars and spartan strike.

Sure it sucks it's starting out as a Russian only beta. But it a way to test a large audience with new stuff with out pissing off the core fans by experimenting with a core game.Personally this its a great idea they can't take risks with the core franchise but with this is pretty much unlimited in the things they can try.

Personally I don`t mind them trying out new ideas such as these. As long as I get my traditional Halo game with campaign and multiplayer which I will be getting this year. This Halo Online game doesn't seem like my type of game at all....but that`s fine. Gimme that Halo 5, been missing it since the end of the beta.

To me this is like Nintendo's Mario Kart arcade game. It's just odd that it exists but hey those suits know a hell of a lot more how to run a company then I do so...

This is just ridiculous.

You're not entitled to the latest Halo games just because MS might have released Halo games on PC in the past. If you're that hungry for a taste of Halo, buy an 360 or X1 and be done with it, you're not going to get another mainline Halo on PC and you likely won't ever get MCC on PC either.

If you want Halo on PC, make do with this. If that's not enough, you know what you have to do to get that Halo lovin'.

Stop acting like a child throwing a tantrum because they didn't get the specific toy they wanted for Christmas.

It seems loadouts are Microtranscations judging from the trailer. Apart from some weapons, maps and the sprint ability it looks very much like Halo 3 which is great IMO.

It's also hedging bets for when 60$ retail products start bleeding marketshare. Single player campaign is just about the only notable-thing left to differentiate COD from rising F2P shooters, so pretending their target audience is fundamentally secure from such competition would be silly.

And you guys didn't believe Phil Spencer when he confirmed their committal to the PC space!

What a weird thing this is.

Honestly this looks very good to me for a F2P, I would love to have this game on my Xbox One. 343i make this happen!

It actually looks pretty good for a f2p Halo title (even if it seems to deviate a bit from traditional Halo, it still looks like fun). And wow at that Turf remake, looks pretty good. Please 343i, port that to H2A.

I would love for this to be made available in other countries aside from Russia.

It is created in cooperation with Innova, or 4game, if you will. And, I believe, Innova is owned by Mail.ru, which is infamous for creating and milking f2p garbage to no-end. For example, they basically killed Allods Online, which was kinda russian WoW-clone, prior to being sold to Mail.ru it was a decent subscription-based MMO, after sale it became microtransactions-filled mess. Do not expect anything of quality from 4game, it will be the same as Warface.

Microsoft wouldn't let the brand be destroyed. In that way anyway.

What brand? Nobody cares about Halo in Russia; as stated on first pages, it has status of "garbage console shooter" here (well, any console-only shooter has this status, we are very PC centric, and aiming with gamepad is considered to be a joke). And if it's only for Russia, there is nothing to be destroyed, since actual market for this game will never see it.

As a longtime Halo to PC hopeful... This hurts. I agree with Hawkeye. This is some BS. Renewed focus on PC? If PC gamers don't get some form of Halo on PC in the next 12 months (be it this, or MCC or Halo 5) I say we riot!

I'd be happy to see that version of turf remake in MCC H2A multiplayer just as it is. Seriously suffering from playing the same maps over and over.

Russia exclusive is strange, wondering if they don't want to step on any toes when considering the wider Windows 10 market.

Don't see why some people are so upset about this.
It is primarily meant for countries with big PC markets, will grow the Halo brand, and will not interfere with Halo 5 later this year...

Not seeing how it is a bad thing?
Oh, and it actually looks kinda good...
