Illusory Revelations#FE (SMTxFE) - First Trailer, Winter 2015 [Up: Screenshots]

It's practically nothing like SMT or Fire Emblem. Why do we need to start addressing fan service in the first trailer? This image shows how over the top Atlus went in transforming this title into something that is nothing like what it is based on. That's what's wrong with it.

But even if this was it's own thing I'd still take issue with the nature of the situation + fan service. It's just so stupid.

It looked FE enough to me, and I don't care about SMT, o well.
And I actually like fanservice, so I'm happy about the abundance of that.

Then what do you mean by "acting anime"?

The SMT series has it own share of anime tropes it likes to dig into often. Just like the sort of anime tropes you see in that trailer, just of a different tone/style. The trailer just seems like it's combining the sort of upbeat J-pop idol/Sentai tropes with the usual end-of-the-world/killing god tropes of SMT.

Personally, I think it's funny as fuck.

Wow this looks so bad. Nothing in there screamed SMT or FE. It seems you fight in an arena in front of a crowd? And wow at the pervert stuff, you would think this is a vita game.

Literally not a single Persona fanservice shot in the entire trailer you linked.

(Which is not to say there isn't any in the Persona games, and that it isn't terrible, but it's not a significant part of the game.)

Yukiko's cleavage. Rise slide to the camera in a short shirt. Please

Straight up though, I don't really think this looks anything like Persona other than the school setting. Crazy motorcycles, pegasus mounts, energy weapons, fantasy armor, floating heads on wheels, giant monsters, etc. Even the running around Shibuya looks like it's more SMT/DDS than Persona, at least the earlier ones anyway.

If anything, this is like SMT + Digimon + FE, lol

Agreed and this is just a small snippet that we're getting as a taste to tell us that it's still alive.

Also some final fantasy because of the pegasus mount and motorcycle.

That was fucking terrible actually.

I don't see how in any way that trailer remotely represents either franchises. We got candy soaked colors, lollipops, animu and blaring j-pop music...

That's um... not what I think of when I think of SMT and Fire Emblem.

Then look at is as Atlus X IS instead. The OG teaser was seemingly just a thrown together "we are thinking about stuff pls be excited" thing

Its almost like things change or the game was in an incredibly early state when first announced. It really sounds like people just wanted fire emblem and smt put in a blender and then served up. Instead of a new idea using those series as a base.

Which is fine. But makes people being dissapointed about this perfectly understandable

I personally, for example, wanted elements from the core SMT franchise (which they used to announce the game) and Fire Emblem combined.
I didn't want Jpop idols and moe and a high school setting

Skimpy clothes are the opposite of an issue.

it's boring and shallow. the art style also looks generic as fuck. not everything needs to be borderline fap material.

i have and enjoy games like akiba's trip, senran kagura, etc., but this crossover seemed like it could be a promising actually deep and interesting game. so it's obviously disappointing to see shit like that. it could still turn out well, but it definitely is the case that an aesthetic like this is indicative of a more shallow and generic game-play experience.

regarding the aesthetic itself, if you don't mind it ever, and always want stuff like that in your games, more power to you. i prefer more diversity among the various things i choose to play.

I can't wait for it!

Winter 2015 for Japan that is. Right?

Although given the speed of Atlus' localizations lately I'd expect it for early 2016 in the west.

Borderline? Shit looked like fap material to me.

Rewatching the trailer the music and fan service are concerning and I can see why its turning people off. I'm going to keep faith in the development teams involved though for now!

Fire Emblem has been very anime tho.

I can't really speak on SMT, I've only played one entry in the main series.

Well at least with Awakening it wasn't that bad and was still pretty serious for the most part. With this game its been cranked up alot more and honestly I didn't even know it was supposed to be SMT X FE until after the trailer.

Loved it. Wonder what the actual title will be, seeing as the style is way closer to Persona than regular SMT (they probably went that route because the Persona fanbase is supposedly larger, so the game has more chances of success).

Yukiko's cleavage. Rise slide to the camera in a short shirt. Please

I admit I missed the quick Yukiko shot, but Rise doesn't count unless we've now expanded the definition of fanservice to include fully-clothed girls showing nothing revealing in completely non-sexual poses.

Generally when it comes to TV/games/movies/whatever, that is what people are going to do. Usually it's "chibi" or "anime" or "influenced by Japanimation". On forums like this, they use it to describe pandering fanservice-laden games... I'm not entirely sure if there is a single word that describes that but for the most part I think people all get what is trying to be said.

That doesn't make it less incorrect to use, I don't even want to hear the "language is an ever-changing thing" bullcrap, we already have words to describe those things let's use them.

Digimon, ha you're right upon second watch. this needs to be quoted more, I think people heard the J-pop and went crazy.

Personally, the tonal difference is what killed my hype. I was expecting something much more like Fire Emblem characters teaming up with SMT characters to take on YHVH and Satan's armies in turn-based strategy with Press Turn.

There's a massive difference in tone between this trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Et7a4bM7n3M

And this trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKaHMqkjGS8

Hell, it looks waaay closer to Omega Quintet: https://youtu.be/ZhvwlCDQ_m8?t=13s

If anything, the first trailer looks more like a place holder and nothing final. Art style in the new trailer is now more cohesive and not a mish-mash of styles.

I was wondering if you had watched the trailer yet when you first posted.

Yeah I was posting how happy I was it was actually alive. I don't think it looks BAD or anything (although I'm so tired of anime-style games with their ridiculous fanservice. I'm sorry I'm not attracted to cartoons or polygons, so this panty raid shit does nothing for me), but it's just so distant from SMT and FE as a concept (visually and gameplay wise) from what I can tell that now I can't just blindly have faith it'll be good, I have to hear impressions that the gameplay actually works well and that it's not too cheese over-the-top anime style.

But I have confidence in this team that the odds are good it'll be a stellar title. I just can't blindly think that way as I would have if they more directly utilized the SMT and FE worlds and gameplay concepts.

Lol @ people getting all uppity about the way people use the term anime. I love anime and I will say this negatively again: this looks so anime.

If the original reveal had just been Atlus x Inteligent Systems and nothing else people wouldn't be nearly as mad.
That music is still horrendous, though.

I mean I'll wait to see if the gameplay is compelling even if the art style and tone seem repulsive. If I can get past the loli bullshit in EO, I can play a good RPG. But there even doubling down in EO2U with the creepy fan service. Don't do this Atlus. :(

you just knew it was going to be a fanservice game the moment the concept art of the girl with bulging breasts barely contained by a school girl outfit showed up

Nothing wrong with the game but I'm sure it goes against the expectations on how the game will be based on the project announcement teaser back in January. I mean that teaser was dark and serious and it seemed like it would feature the cast of SMT and Fire Emblem in some sort of world where they somehow meet each other.

What we got was not what anyone expected but doesn't mean it's a bad game or anything. Just got something extremely different.

Oh, sorry, didn't think I couldn't use a term commonly used with a negative connotation flippantly because someone would take issue with it pedantically.

I'm a fan of anime. Of all sorts and of all genres. I don't really care about using it as a "nonsense descriptor" when I feel like it. I'll say it again, "this game looks anime as hell."

Oh right, I get it, its ok to use a term incorrectly because other people do it? Stellar reasoning. I'm sorry that I "pedantically" think that words should be used to represent what they actually mean on a message board so peope reading the thread dont have to divine from context and their psychic gift (dont worry its a dark psychic gift so its not "too anime") what other people man. I never implied you couldnt use it incorrectly, of course you can use it incorrectly, but that doesnt make your use of it any less nonsense, so have at it.

I wanted to express myself in this way.

The fact that this looks more like Persona than SMT proper got me even more excited for this game. Glad I'm getting a Wii U this year.

Persona 5: Fuck yess!!! Oh my god!! All over my body!! YESSS YESSS!!!!!

SMTXFE: Wtf is this shit? Looks like Persona!! Garbage!!

mNX.gif

1. Atlus didn't tease SMT5 and then turned it into Persona 5. It was always Persona 5.
2. Persona 5 looks better than this.
3. Not everyone likes Persona, even on GAF.

I understand that the game changes, but really? The tone is entirely different from the initial reveal to now. It may be the case where the trailer doesn't share the same tone as the game, but at this point I don't think that is the case.

I've watched that original trailer many times, but I never got any kind of "tone" from it. There wasn't anything there except some still shots of characters from both games. We had and have had no idea what that game was going to be. I could understand if they released some actual gameplay footage or even some anime cut-scenes, but we got nothing really back then.

So I guess nintendo really wanted something Persona like for the winter, luckily I gots a Wii U now so this won't be hard to pick up once it comes over.

Most people can infer what it means through context; a minority—including you—seemingly can't. That's all there is to it.

Idols in any form kind of imply fanservice IMO.

For the most part, I think nearly everyone knows what people mean by 'anime' when it has been brought up.

yeah that music needs to go away asap.

No kidding, first I thought this was an otome game. But then the graphics are too good for 3DS. Then I saw some Fire Emblem-ish character and "oh!"

Well that wasn't what I expected! I guess this is more of an AtlusxNintendo collaboration rather than SMTxFE, which makes me think the SMTxFE announcement was rushed.

Rewatching the trailer the music and fan service are concerning and I can see why its turning people off. I'm going to keep faith in the development teams involved though for now!

Atlus and Intelligent Systems have yet to repel me away. So I'm keeping myself on the optimistic side and wait for more information before jumping to conclusions

I thought the character designs being similar to FE should have given that away. I can understand what people are talking about with the tone of the music and stuff in the trailer, but literally everything else looks to be a mix of FE and SMT. If there was a more serious song used I think people would have changed their minds.

This looks like a Persona prototype. Essentially Persona 6.

I'll take it. But I was psyched for the original concept :/

The music was by Meguro? I feel like that thread where a mod trolled about wanting Lady Gaga to do Persona music because Meguro sucked is going to be real at some point.
