Looking at this thread, it's really tiring to see people disparage both Shin Megami Tensei and Fire Emblemtwo great video game franchisesin order to somehow justify this game's trailer. Some are making it sound like SMT and Fire Emblem are franchises akin to Hyperdimension Neptunia, Conception or Omega Quintet.
How are people disparaging SMT or Fire Emblem?
Look, I lived through the 90s anime boom. The first few Shin Megami Tensei games were released in the years immediately following Akira and preceding Neon Genesis Evangelion. Dark, post-apocalyptic themes, religious symbolism, violence, edginess, and so on were in vogue in anime at the time. That kind of aesthetic could be seen in Shin Megami Tensei played to stuff that was popular in anime at the same time. You could see it in both popular works like Akira and B-tier productions like Demon City Shinjuku.
When Atlus reinvented the Persona series as their new big RPG franchise with Persona 3, they refit it to serve an audience that was watching a different flavor of anime that was popular in the mid 00s. Atlus has always adapted to fit the changing times. Them making grimdark post-apocalyptic stuff was just as "mainstream anime" back in the 90s as idol stuff is today.
The older Fire Emblem games were the same. Their artstyle was an obvious product of its time.
Moreover, this new game is probably just the designers wanting to do something different and have fun with it. Making the exact same thing over and over gets boring. Miyamoto once talked about how it was the young designers who joined Nintendo were the ones who wanted to make stuff just like the games they grew up playing. The older designers were the ones who wanted to do something different and throw out convention.
Saying that classic Fire Emblem and Shin Megami Tensei has always been anime isn't a slight or insult, its just stating simple facts. Their aesthetic and stories were always inspired by the kinds of things that were popular in their time. That's normal.
Anyways, I am a big fan of classic Fire Emblem and I like the Persona games, but I am excited for this new crossover game too. I honestly wasn't at all exicted for it until now, since a simple cross-over sounded dreadfully dull and unworkable. This is actually exciting.
