Illusory Revelations#FE (SMTxFE) - First Trailer, Winter 2015 [Up: Screenshots]

The only other one I've seen of theirs is the Persona 5 Rewind, and it was surprisingly good, so I'll tune in.

To me, E3 sounds too early and TGS sounds too late.

Really looking forward to the GameXplain video that is likely coming. Actually their video on Tiki suggest one is coming and that will likely deserve it's own thread with how great their videos end up being.

No idea, but the localization process for the game is clearly not far in the process, E3 is 2 months away and it's a show focused for the West. The only thing I would expect is to see this same trailer replaying in Atlus' booth (and/or Nintendo's).

Xenoblade X at last E3 literally contradicts this.

That was one of my biggest surprises at E3 last year. Not only did they live demo Xenoblade X, they live demoed it for over 40 FUCKING MINUTES! Then they demoed it for another 40 minutes on day 3. Not to mention they did a demo with IGN and Gamespot as well.

I don't remember what happened; what do you mean? Was Xenoblade X's presentation in Japanese or something?

It was a story trailer that was subtitled.

Edit: Oh yeah. How could I forget that. Thanks Blood. The entire Treehouse live demo of the very beginning of the game. They did that twice while everything was still in Japanese.

Yeah. They showed a live demo of the Japanese version of the game with no translations for anything, just one of the Treehouse guys explaining what was happening, in addition to a subbed trailer.

Oh, sure, there are numerous examples of Japanese trailers shown with English subtitles at E3. I was thinking more of a presentation literally all in Japanese, presenter's voice and all.

Though, I guess if text is a non-issue for a presentation going by that example, then that wouldn't matter in this game's case.

I personally thought the trailer looked interesting albeit not what I expected. But now that I think about it I'm not really sure what I expected out of this project. Kingdom Hearts but with SMT and FE instead of Disney and Final Fantasy? Medieval Devil Survivor? idk I guess those games would have been cool but something about this seems better in someways. I think a melding on these games on a conceptual/abstract level is far more interesting than a literally cross over between the two. The last thing I would have wanted out of this project is a Project X Zone styled SRPG which I hoping it wasn't . Also this way longevity is better served since it's a standalone concept that can stand on it's own two legs. I can understand why SMT fans are somewhat let down by the game since it isn't the fan service we were hoping but oh well that ship already sailed. Bring on what ever this is.

Criticism about the Jpop motif strike me as a bit odd. I'm not sure if depicting Jpop in a game is what I would call fan service or pandering. That's like saying Brutal Legend's metal motif and theme is fan service when it's integral to the game's identity and what it constantly communicates to the player. You remove that and Brutal legend isn't the same experience. I suspect something similar is occurring with this game. Also i don't get why we would complain about fan service regarding a game that exists to serve fan service in concept quite literally. I mean, it's a crossover title between two beloved franchises. I understand not liking it or not being a fan of what you saw in the trailer but lets not get beyond that. Furthermore who exactly would this be pandering to and why exactly is it a deterrent when we know nothing of how it will serve the game?

PS: I hate how fan service has been misappropriated to mean boobs and how pandering often means "shit I dont like but may appeal to someone else not me"

That'd be great, but that sounds like something I'd be confident P Studio could pull off, but I don't know about the Devil Survivor team. More and more, I keep thinking that there's a weird tonal dissonance behind this preview trailer, so this is one of the things I'd like to see.

If anything I trust in the Devil Survivor team to pull it off since Devil Survivor (1, I haven't played 2) was an amazing deconstruction of the series like Pokemon and Digimon and what happens when real people happen to summon beings of power. I would love if this turns into the Madoka Magica of videogames, LOL

I HOPE it has tons of fan service pandering! I'll love it even more!

I'll admit it: the initial concept of FE x SMT sounded quite boring to me. We really didn't know what type of game it was, but you could assume it would be an SRPG, which SMT already has as a side series (Devil Survivor). There was nothing really inherently interesting to me about Ike fighting Beezelbub or something.

I'm not sure if this alternative is better. It's certainly... different. They went full anime though. You NEVER go full anime. A girl straight up transforms into her panties. I have no idea what the hell is the purpose of that or how it could possibly tie into any sort of story point. I do think the dichotomy between reality and fantasy is interesting, although it's a typical theme in the Persona games. There's such a flurry of gameplay scenes they through out during this trailer, but I can't really put it all together. I will keep my eye on it, kind of like how people keep their eyes on flaming cars they see on the side of the highway.

We couldnt assume that, because they aleady confirmed since the announcement in that direc hat it wasent going to be a SRPG, but that it was going to be just a RPG

I didn't really think of Devil Survivor as a deconstruction of collect 'em battle/'em games it just came across as a SMT game but it was a strategy rpg with a few additional hooks and changes to that formula. That's not to say that this game won't be a deconstruction of Idolism but I don't really think the precedent here is set. Anyways I don't need it to be a deconstruction of idol culture but I admit that would be a interesting story if it's not pretentious, masturbatory, and facile.

In my opinion this game will actually be a huge social commentary on Japan's j-pop culture and a subversion of the typical brainless Vita idol game. Also, expect to be able to kill your friends in HD, especially if there's a Law vs Chaos alignment system.

I actually hope there's social links, because a Nintendo IP that brings in the Persona crowd would be a godsend. Especially considering must people expected this to be a Wii U cross-over SRPG like Project X Zone.

This would be excellent. At least incorporating the Law/Chaos element of SMT would be wonderful!

Edit: Damn work! I'm so behind on the discussion.

Weird they didn't mention the obvious Miku reference. Super relevant considering the idol motif.

But very good video otherwise! Their P5 one was great too. I need to check these out more often.

Yeah lol I was expecting them to mention Miku.

Overall, it was a really solid analysis. For all the cluelessness we get from IGN, their rewind trailer videos are pretty damn strong.

That IGN analysis was fine, but there's way too much Persona talk in it.

I don't feel like a lot of the Persona comparisons that are being brought up for SMTxFE are warranted. A lot of them feel like a stretch. There are some obvious parallels such as the 2-world set-up, or the high school setting, but their transformations aren't anything like "Personas," and characters aren't referencing Persona.

They both take place in modern day Japan in Shibuya. It's a bit J-pop-y, with SMT-esque combat and students living a double life. I think the comparisons are warranted, and I think it's a good thing.

Read my edit. Some of these comparisons are going too far just for the sake of it. I get that Persona is Atlus' biggest series so it's easy to compare this to it, but that doesn't mean this is anything like Persona other than the superficial similarities.

Oh yeah, the guy constantly saying 'their Persona' like it is indeed a Persona was a little annoying.

I like that shit occasionally just not necessarily here.

Idol music is Japanese pop but not all Japanese pop is idol music.

Wait a min, you keep misusing J-Pop when you mean idol. =___=

I'm sure most people knew what they meant. It's an easier way of saying "summon" or w/e without confusing people.

Twith SMT-esque combat

Wait, whoa there. I have to specifically quote this in a reply: what do you mean by "SMT-esque combat"? If there's anything in the trailer I could say is absolutely different from anything SMT, it would be what we're seeing from the battle system.

I'm sure most people knew what they meant. It's an easier way of saying "summon" or w/e without confusing people.

I think "summon" is better than "Persona." Soon, people are going to start calling the demons in other Megaten games "Personas" if this keeps up. They're pretty thematically and conceptually relevant to the Persona games, and the transformations here aren't anything like the manifestation of the other selves from that series. They're pretty cool; kinda lessens how cool they are.

I feel like the well informed will know what he meant, while others will now refer to those characters as Persona.

For some people I think it's just the closest point of reference. In the press in particular, there's a certain reverence for P4, but a lot of those people don't actually engage with anime all that often if ever. What are really just mainstay tropes from modern anime strike them as call-backs to Persona. It's ignirant, but totally benign.

It's when the comparisons are made in a pajorative sense that I dislike, myself.

What is the closest game to compare it to then?

Why are you saying that like this game absolutely must be compared to another? SMTxFE shares similarities with Persona. It also clearly has its own identity. Its own identity doesn't have to be diluted by having every single aspect of it relate to another game.
