GTA V PS4: 1080@30, Core i3/750Ti: 1080@60. How is this possible?

There's always room for optimizations. Does the console really need 2 cores reserved for background operations while the game is running? I highly doubt it. I think Sony is being conservative for now and we will see better optimization in the future.

The moment they drop that requirement, they can never take it back though. So even if that happens, it won't be until late in the life of the console, when they don't forsee any new features requiring those cores (unless those features end up existing by then of course, in which case it won't ever happen).

And aren't AMD's apus pretty good?
Yes for what they're targeted at they're good. But those are also clocked a lot higher than the cores in the consoles.

If Steamroller was ready earlier we might have seen consoles equipped with that.

I actually didn't intend to have an argument, just to state why this is an important question, but I'll bite. I'm about 70% in support of the pc platform. I love the idea of consoles but I'm afraid they aren't fulfilling their potential at the moment and aren't really capable of competing with pc.

I prefer gaming on a tv not a monitor. Multiple purposes ? If I am going to play a pc game on a tv then I am sure as hell not going to write a resume or put my finances into spreadsheet or just web browse using the pc that is connected to the tv. Those things are just awkward to do on a pc connected to a tv. I already have a tablet and laptop I use for those types of things.
Video streaming ? Amazon Instant Video doesnt even stream in hd on pc. Netflix ? You'd need to use a mouse for navigating the app and the videos themselves. No thanks. Not when there are better devices for these purposes that I already own.
All these needs are based on gaming on a TV. I doubt gamers moving from console to pc would demand they game on a bigger, lower resolution and lower framerate screen.

And the convenience factor of consoles has pcs beat hands down for me. I can grab my ds4, press the playstation button, the ps4 turns on and the receiver and tv also turn on automatically thanks to hdmi-cec. Doesnt get anymore convenient than that for me.
Yes, this is the big thing that separates the two pieces of hardware. Except PC's are getting easier and consoles are getting less plug-and-play.

I'm perfectly content as a console gamer. No need to ever have to upgrade my system to play the latest games. Yes, its a wonderful option for people, but I don't find interest in it. Glad to see that rockstar did a good job on the PC port.

Some of us are on the platform for customizing be it IQ, fps, or Input

I haven't upgraded in two years a lot of mid range gamers didn't need to for GTA5.

No need to upgrade your PC either. There might eb a WANT because you're not happy with whatever performance you are getting, but needing to upgrade onPC happens about as regularly as console generations.

Eh, sucks that alexandros got juniored.
This thread was such a deliberate attempt that it was not even funny. Heck the OP also choose a title that was flamebait despite the original article having a completely different title.

No wonder he was juniored.

So does anybody who posts a DF Face Off thread.

Seems like double standards to me.
What double standards? Point me to another DF thread with such a stupid title. I have posted many of them, but I never try to create such titles.

Which yields what? That's he's a PC gamer?

That is a special sort of sin on GAF, isn't it?

I don't know. I'm not really familiar with the OP's posts. I'm just trying to read between the lines here because I don't think was a bait thread and the mods haven't closed it.

But what are the settings?
I can get most games running at 1080p@60fps on a low spec PC but they definitely won't look like fantastic lol.
but theres a big difference between how a developer sets a consoles configuration and being able to adjust everything to get that 1080p@60fps on any PC.

I'm mildly surprised that alexandros was juniored for this thread, but considering all the thread whining I'm extremely surprised that his was the only punishment dished out.

OP was a member before he made this thread.

I like the guy, what can I say. But for all I know he could have gotten warnings in the past. What do I know.

Boggles the mind that he's juniored for, well, nothing, while jerks like this are left be.

As i said before, Alex has a history. You think 'low level optimizations' and 'coding the metal' aren't just bait? He's made like 8 threads(that i can remember without going into any post histories) specifically on this PC vs console master race rhetoric specifically to push an agenda(not to mention the attitude of many of his posts in threads not even relating to such things) and its really annoying.

I didn't wish Junior on him, but sometimes the climate just needs to come down for some people.

Yeah, Puma+ cores are nearly 50% more efficient than Jaguar cores. If the PS4/XB1 were out a year later, they probably would have had that instead.

without consoles, people will play games on other platforms, they are not going to stop playing video games. They will play games on their smartphones, tablets, streaming services , "even" PCs, and video game companies will make games on platforms people play games on. people at Naughty Dog or 343 or Treyarch are not going flip burgers if there are no more consoles.

I agree games will be made. Command and conquer 45 would for sure have been made.

The article says they tried to match the quality of the PS4.

But yeah, without hard knowledge of what those are, this is still just an approximation.

I love this line but it console devs pulling the wool over consumer eyes.

Rockstar could end this debate in a minute by saying what settings on pc match closely to a console but based on the thread and the salt already doubt they want the heat. Same for most other companies. PC gamers would love better standards between platforms for comparison but I know this will be another gen of useless face offs for the reason we are mentioning right here.

BTW most of us are doing that with very high, high, or ultra settings not normal.

Just referring to 'knowing the danger' of posting such a thread in general. Let's face it, inflammatory title or not, this thread was going to end up the same way anyways.

But yea, alexandros does have a history of platform warrior stuff. No doubt. I just don't think he's particularly unique in that. Not too bothered, though. He wasn't banned, just held back from making threads.

I would replace mcc with forza (both motorsport and horizon) and sunset overdrive but yes, like those. But I feel there's fewer and fewer with each Gen.
My post was only about the fact that even big console games can have crazy launch issues.

Most people that had troubles with GTAV on PC got them figured out already. You should have seen how mad I was for a day because of it.

Here is a riddle! Does GTA5 get made without consoles? Performance does not matter all that much as long as you can sell 45 million copies of a game at full price.

I don't get it. Does the game check how much I paid and sets its performance accordingly?

I think that end of the PC spectrum can handle itself better than a PS4 when the effort is applied to actually have such PC hardware be used effectively, something that at times is not done by console centric developers - but is an ever improving situation. The new APIs on the way likely offer a way to have such efficacy that is more easily implemented over current APIs, so I'd hope to see this situation continue to improve.

In the end this discussion becomes moot. If you want a locked 60fps, you can't get it with a 750ti - but you can have a locked 30fps. If you want something that is easily averaging 59fps but has some dips, the 750ti remains an option. Meanwhile that freedom won't exist on a console (at least not yet), and I'd hope people are well aware of those differences.

The thread ends up being the usual console vs pc stuff. Some simple facts:
  • PCs with such hardware are very capable and often able to perform better than the current consoles, with the freedom and flexibility to experience the game in a way you may prefer.
  • Consoles remain cost effective if you are not intending to subscribe to play online and want great game performance
Both have their own "exclusives" and features to suit your tastes. Make your choice and be happy (or both).

Lets be clear, though, the ps4 version currently holds a rock solid 30fps without dips. That requires a frame-rate well above 30fps on average. If it were unlocked I wonder what we'd see? With the 30fps cap it's impossible to know.

This isn't mentioned enough. It doesn't necessarily mean the fps will be significantly higher, but it does assuredly mean it is high than 30fps. The question is, by how much, and that is likely never going to be demonstrated unless developers open this up or someone can modify the PS4 to demonstrate it.

Impressive numbers for that system...

Running an OC'd 2500K (4.3GHz) on a 2GB 770 with 8GB and I'm usually at 60/1080 with occasional dips, most settings pretty high, though limited due to VRAM. Silly me for getting the 2GB version. Debating getting a 980 right now or waiting for the new gen.

Might as well at least wait for AMD to trot out their new stuff this summer(?).
