Splatoon Direct - 7th May 2015

I now want the splatoon amiibos.. anyone knows if they are available somewhere? I don't know if amazon hasn't put them on preorder or they already sold out

Still haven't gone up on Amazon I think most other places have though. Hopefully won't be hard come launch day to find them. I am looking for a 3 pk still.

I assume its got mod support though?

Best shooter as well? Other guy was closer with TF2 ;)

It did, but if I'm remembering right it took a while before custom maps that were actually good to come out.

If you;re in Canada Best Buy has the triple pack available for pre-order.

I'm not the biggest shooter guy and I'm ok with how they're handling the updates. Looking forward to really learn those 5 maps at launch and get good at the game. I'm not saying every game should do that but for 40€ 5 maps, single player, mini games and gear customisation sounds good to me. Especially since the later updates will be free (up to summer 2015 I guess).

I wonder if maybe that Splatoon poster will come up through Gamestop's reward program in the States? I dig that front side, I would actually love that, and I'm not generally a poster guy, either.

That doesn't really help your point since both of those games were 20 dollars at launch. This game is 60.

There's a big difference.

My point was that some people seemed concerned about a lack of content to keep people playing. My point was that the quality of the maps is what determines the length of the online community, not the number. I wasn't even factoring in the cost of the game at all.

Funny to see single player mode completely ignored judging the contents, while it is my main interest :p
hope reviews will take care of it

Yeah that's disappointing. But I think they clearly wanna built a multiplayer community more than anything right now

Finally home and downloaded the demo! All set for tomorrow!

...At least until I read the manual to familiarise myself with the controls. Gamepad only, gyro aiming only, right stick only moves the camera left and right? What is this shit???

I mean I'll give it a shot, but given that I've already spent several hours on previous games cementing just how fucking awful and uncomfortable that shitty tablet controller is for me, I'm pretty certain this is going to be a deal breaker, which is utter wank.

What?

WHAT?

I can deal with Gamepad only, but man...what?

right stick only moves the camera left and right?

wait, what? that's kind of weird..

I am a gyro convert though after playing Wind Waker HD. big sweeping movements with the right stick and fine tuning with the gyroscope. perfection.

but if you can only move the camera right or left......I don't know. need to play it but that sounds really strange on paper.

they were actually available on walmart for like 2 days before the inkling boy and girl ones sold out i dont think those 2 will be hard to come by but the triple pack good luck getting it.

I would generally agree. I mean heck nuketown 24/7 was a thing for a reason.

I just don't understand why they wouldn't put in Pro controller support. It's like every one of their multiplayer focused games this gen has had it, along with support for a variety of other controller options, yet the one game they seem to want to build almost solely on its multiplayer, and they don't? It's...baffling.

I mean, like I said, I can use the Gamepad. It's really not a deal-breaker (though this gyro only aimming is...urgh, I don't know), but why would you not include the option?

That's not true, you can disable gyro if you want and that will allow you to only use the right stick and enables you to move the camera up and down with the right stick.

This is one of the things we have known since the reveal of the game. You can see in the manual that they list a setting to disable Gyro.

I hate gyro controls full stop. Just doesn't do it for me. Wiimote's and Move controllers are great mind, but waving a controller around just doesn't work for me at all.

But yeah, I'm look at the manual right now. The right stick is labelled as "Look Left/Right" with a corresponding single horizontal plane of movement arrow next to the symbol that isn't present on the left sticks.

They added a few weird minor dependencies on the Gamepad such as that airstrips ultra and superjumps. Probably because people were asking for more Gamepad use. So, well, it got it.

Yeah, this game is being pushed out the door early. Feels like paying 60 bucks (or 50 not sure how much it is) for a beta.

$60 in US, 40 euro in Europe, and I don't know, a trillion yen or something in Japan probably, I have no idea.

I feel like that could easily be implemented without Gamepad use. You're talking about the spawning thing, right? You just have the map pop up on the screen and select your place like every other shooter game in the world. Not a hard solution, not hard at all.

I've been sooooo pumped for this game, but I gotta say this latest direct really turned me off. The marketing seems way off, the lack of maps and modes is pretty startling (especially for the price point), and there seems to be a general lack of polish about the game that I can't quite put my hands on, but seems very anti-Nintendo.

I'll wait for a deal, or for the remainder of the content to come out, but what had a lot of promise for me is starting to dwindle by failing to really show much/anything new.

Good, hate gyro controls. So bad.

Also good that EUsers aren't being screwed on price this time. Still not cool with paying full price for an incomplete game, I understand that they would have to charge less initially but charge for the updates as well though. So I'll just wait for the game to be complete (in August?) before I even think about buying it. Sad that they have to rush games out to complete the library.

It's near the end on the direct, 2 maps are chosen and they rotate every 4 hours. I just watched it and that made it sounds like you can't just have multiple loadouts since they mention a smart squid will check the maps from the display board and gear up according.

I just rewatched it. I don't know how I heard 1 hour this morning. Oh, well. That part of the online mode has me indifferent. I'm used to only playing a lot of the same maps in multiplayer.

Also, as I was rewatching it I realized that Booyah Base is actually Bouillabaisse, a Provencal seafood stew!

Like I mentioned earlier, I'm still pretty hyped for this game and I can't wait to see some of you guys online tomorrow.

I could understand up to this point. From what we've seen, it seems exactly like the kind of polish you'd expect from Nintendo, right down to the small details like all the retailers. If anything, I would say that's probably about the most Nintendo thing about something that seems very much unlike Nintendo otherwise.

August is when the traditional party system is out, yes. As far as new maps, weapons, gear, and modes, I don't think we have a time table yet.

Well initially I was very off put about this game, but single player content looks cool, but the pricing and content scheme is VERY off-putting so yep, a no buy for me until the game is fully complete. Very unlike Nintendo to do this.

I've managed to get Splatoon for £22.45 in the UK from thegamecollection.net.

I did have a 10% voucher to use as they messed up my original order, but even without the voucher it's only £25 with free 1st class delivery.

Out of curiosity, did you ever try something like one of those Ps1 pads which have an axis in the middle?

I actually did! Got a cheap one from a bargain bin the year before the PS2 came out! Briefly fun for the novelty factor, but no real improvement over the original Dualshock for me.

I actually kind of like novelty controllers in all honesty, even mad shit like the DK bongo drums and RE4 chainsaw controller. That whacky novelty wears off real quick though, and that's pretty much all I consider gyro controls to be.

Fair enough if others prefer them, but I'm vastly more comfortable and more competent with the standard shooter twin sticks myself, and if a games going to force gyro controls on me, then I'm not buying it. I've got a massive backlog of games I'll actually enjoy to play instead.

This. CoD has a number of maps the games launch with but only half are what most would consider good. Those are the ones designed the best and can get you back into the action quickly. That is why nuketown is so popular. Quality of the maps is indeed what is important and not the number and that goes for a lot of shooters. Battlefield is the same way. Some maps are way better and liked over others. You don't need a lot of people playing them for this to be determined I think.

Yeah, honestly, I get that 5 is a low end number, but if they're well designed and everything, I really don't think it'll be a problem. They've said more maps are coming by June (if I heard/understood correctly), so newer maps are going to come soon. As long as the maps are good, that part doesn't bother me.

To be honest, my main source of sourness right now about the game is the price, lack of Pro controller support, and not having co-op online in some form.

well personal preference all the way but I'd recommend trying them out again. if "waving a controller around" is what you have in your mind then you haven't mastered the right stick/gyro combination yet. now I'm just going to assume that the right stick can move in all directions because fuck, that'd be really weird if not. but yeah, instead of waving the controller around use the right stick for large movements and the gyro for fine tuning and accuracy. if you're doing it properly you'll only be slightly moving your wrists.

As much as I'm excited for the game, this direct wasn't too enthralling to me.

-only launching with 5 maps
-weird server-testing demo?
-regurgitated info
-no paintbrush until update?

A few good notes:

+custom friend settings (in August)
+DLC is going to be free
+Splatfest sounds cool
+Arcade mini-games

Why can't you play any other modes on unranked? This seems really weird. Shouldn't you be able to play any gamemode online without having to worry about your stats? How do you even train for a new gamemode then?

But I guess the ranking doesn't matter that much anyway.
