The Witcher 3 | Review Thread

Have you ever been on a product page on Amazon or something and then looked at a very positive review, and then went and read the most critical review?

I feel like everybody does this for everything except for video games, because for some reason it gets personal.

It goes both ways. You'll have people completely ignore the multiple perfect scores and find that one bad score and say "see, overhyped total!"

So, how much time before we get the threads:

-Is The Witcher 3 GOTY?
-Is The Witcher 3 the best game of the generation?
-Can the The Witcher 3 be the best RPG of all-time?
-Why aren't most games like The Witcher 3?

=P

Pretty soon, the same happened with Bloodborne.

It's like the opposite of GTA5, whereas GTA5 had an EPIC main storyline and the open world stuff was just "stuff to do".

In Witcher 3, the open world stuff is EPIC and the main storyline is just a nice way to tie up the main character's storyline.

I love Open World games, so I'm curious to see how this game compares to the GTA and Elder Scrolls games.

Goddamn. Wasn't a huge fan of 2 and was planning on waiting for a drought with this one, but those scores have me tempted. It's coming at the absolute worst time for me to get into a giant RPG (moving and starting a new job) so maybe I'll just end up waiting anyway.

No mention of how decisions in W1 and W2 will impact W3?

The press played the PS4 version. There's no way to import a save. There's just a conversation to see what you did, and from what I saw on early impressions of the 'leaked' copies, that conversation is all of about 4-5 questions.

I personally kind of doubt Witcher 2's story will impact 3's at all. First off, because CDPR was trying to blow this thing out of the water they had to keep in mind that a shit-ton of people wouldn't have played those games. Second... well... Witcher 2's ending is kind of the same no matter what you do:
Shit is fucked and Nilfgaard is going to come in and kick some northern ass

I can't rely on reviews to tell me if a game is truly good or bad. I picked up the Order: 1886 after all the bad reviews came out, and absolutely loved the game. Same with Ryse.

But, on the other hand, I can't get into the better-reviewed game, Shadow of Mordor.

The hype train has me a little onboard with the Witcher 3, but for a similar game like Skyrim on the other hand, I couldn't get into that either.

I have issue with comments about difficulty. As far as i know Reviews are done usually on Normal difficulty. Witcher 3 has two or three more.

The things I am hearing about this game!

Gerstmann doesn't like Yoshi's Island, Resident Evil 4, Super Metroid, or Red Dead Redemption. I spend an inordinate amount of time consuming Giant Bomb content, and it's hilarious how much he really does hate videogames.

Every time they talk videogames on the podcast, it becomes more and more apparent that Jeff needs a break from games. Jaded and cynical, i mean he's a good guy and all, but damn, being in the industry for so long seems to have taken its toll.

He hates 90% of games. I think he's in the wrong business.
Do you need to like video games to be a professional videogamesman/videogames journalist/Let's Player?

edit: saw xander encouraging people to stay on topic, didn't see the post on mobile. :) Discussion for another thread.

Better scores than I thought, so that's cool, but a couple of the reviews were written by the same people that gave high scores to Dragon Age: Inquisition, so I'm not sure I can trust them. I got burned badly by that game's high scores.

How could it be mentioned? Only the PS4 version was available for testing, where none of the predecessors exist, of course. You can "import" key decisions of the older games by influencing how the backstory is told early on.

Knowing Jeff he played it for 3 hours and put it away. There was no chance he'd like the game. More interested in what Vinny and Rorie will have to say.

And this is the crux of the matter. Considering only Vinny, Rorie and Patrick played 2, the opinions worth listening to for W3 are theirs, in this instance.

I didn't mind hearing Jeff's opinion on Bloodborne as I, like him, didn't like the Souls games so needed to find out how a similarly minded person felt about it.

Then why are people interested in his opinions ? (honest question)

I'm never sure on this. I think the reason GAF can be such a negative place sometimes is because there's such a large Giantbomb following. A lot of them seem to dislike video games, I stopped following them after the Driveclub review and then podcast turning into a wrestling podcast. I hate how much they used the phrase 'hot trash' and the heavy breathing and smacking of their lips before it. It's just all so negative.

Edit: sorry that was OT.

That's kind of a serious accusation, since they even say they paid for it themselves in all the videos.

Okay, I was wrong about them paying to fly the gamespot guys out but I wasn't trying to imply they were being bribed. What I actually meant was them being swept up by the behind the scenes development and letting that influence their opinion.

So now I'm wondering if I totally misjudged this series. I played about an hour of the first Witcher game and got bored. Never tried the second game...

The Witcher 1 takes at least a few hours to get going. The Witcher 2 is a completely different game, basically.

Compare the hype of this game to the scores so far.

15/18 of the reviews in the OP have it at 9/10 or higher (and I'm even excluding Kotaku's "YES" score).

You finished the game? you played the previous games? How can you say this with such a certainty?

i'm starting to think that the reviews have been bought out, i'm surprised that reviews re not taking into account the graphics downgrade and also that jeff does not like this game.

seems like it should be scoring around 7/10 (at best).

Damn, reviews are higher than expected. The framerate issues on PS4 are a bit worrying but hopefully CDPR's message saying they've improved performance since going gold means there's a patch on the way that'll address it.

its hilarious how everyone gets so upset every single time jeff doesn't like the current big game
has anyone figured out the guy tends to like arcade or at least arcade-ish(official term) games?
also, you know, opinions. how do they work?

I love Jeff to death , I've been GB subscriber since day one. However, I've also learned that Jeff's taste in games is far removed from my own. That doesn't mean I dismiss his opinions, but it also means I don't take anything he has to say at face value. Likewise for any of these reviewers. Its nice to see many different opinions but the ones I hold in highest regard are the people who I've identified as having similar tastes to mine. Which is why I'd be much more interested in what Vinny or Rorie have to say than Jeff or Dan.

Those three IP's you mentioned don't have a track record behind them that this series has. You kinda expect that this game was going to turn out good based on the dev track record in this franchise.

Kinda like how we all expected Bloodborne to be good. It's basically a Souls game with tweaks.

Via Jeff

@jeffgerstmann: The review disc they sent over was said to already have the Day 1 patch applied, but I had it crash on me twice in the first hour.

@jeffgerstmann: That hopefully won't carry over to retail, but it kinda left me in a spot where I couldn't trust what I was playing.

And dont forget paying for the gift of flight

I have no idea - just basing it on the reviews I've just read.

It SOUNDS like that's the case. It's being praised mostly for how rich the open world stuff is, as opposed to the main storyline.

Kinda disappointed about the difficulty, I'll definitely be turning that up as high as I can.

As i said before i have issue when review states that game was easy but they played it on Normal usually. We should get more info about higher difficulties.

wow, i am so excited for this game. good on cdpojeket red for all their hard work. I hope this game gets GOTY

Just read it. The reviewer complained about technical problems with the PS4 code with slow and frequent loading times, texture streaming issues during cutscenes and also some NPC animation glitches, then again he also noted that CDPR has a day one patch ready for most of these issues.

Oh man that sucks...hope it plays smoothly by the time i get it.

Jeff kind of always been like this but Ryan/Vinny would always point out the positive side of games during podcasts/quicklooks etc where as now it is just Brad & Dan who point out even more negative stuff for the most part. Drew is the only one left who seems positive/happy to play anything but also has a limited scope on what he actually plays and follows.

Also he never really has been a fan of the large RPG heavy story driven games. Hopefully Vinny gets to do the quicklook ^.^

I agree. It's also becoming increasingly more and more difficult to listen to their extremely long podcast with the way the discuss games anymore.

i need this game ASAP, i hope some stores will break street date this weekend, i cant take it any more!!!!!!!!!
