Koji Igarashi Kickstarts Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (2.5D, backdash, 2018)

I am happy with what we have in terms of stretch goals, 4.25 million and above is gravy. Though it wouldn't hurt for them to at least do a little more of an outreach to gaming news websites, especially with the gameplay footage they now have (kind of).

Amusingly, even though I was a #sword follower and even a Katana clan initiate, I now have some slight remorse for doing so. Mostly because it apparently boiled down to "here's another Crissaegrim". The katana looks cool, but it seems so weird for us to now know what apparently one of the very best weapons is... Ah well, I'm sure there will be some whip that is pretty darn close to as powerful. Crissaegrim would have made the final fight an absolute cake walk in SotN, I had to hold myself back intentionally by using the Alucard Sword and even then the fight was over in no more than just a few minutes. Mind you, this was about a week ago, the first time finishing SotN, and I ended up only challenged in the end by Galamoth. I'm glad I beat him before figuring out some way to cheese him with no effort, I could refrain from doing it, but ignorance is bliss, you know?

Anyways, let's hope the game's Nightmare difficulty is available from the beginning, or maybe that the game will have just a better difficulty bell curve. I don't know, maybe killing every boss in the inverted castle isn't expected as something the player would bother with the first time around, but I ended up dissapointingly overpowered. Apparently OoE doesn't have that problem, if so, that's another reason why IGA and co should take inspiration from all of the Igavania's, not just SotN. The souls system sounds interesting, so something like that or OoE's runes system sounds awesome, just some thoughts. Oh, and a joke gun weapon that is somewhat easy to miss would be cool and funny. Followed by a "true" version that is very difficult to find, just to mess with people.

Edit:
So even if we don't quite reach 5 Million, you think whatever extra that was going to be thrown in at the 5 Million level will be included anyways after the fact, considering Publisher funding.

Another thing I want to bring up. Does anyone know the development budget of Symphony of the Night? I am curious if what that was? Does anyone know how much that game cost to develop?

The first is something I've thought about since the first week. Given its success, a perfect way for the publisher (Spoiler: it's
Deep Silver
) to announce itself and get the good faith of the community is to make a public gesture of being moved by the support and "upping its pledge" to fill out the remaining budget necessary for "IGA's unhindered vision". I think it'd be great PR, and would in general be not very unrealistic, all things considered. Only a max of 1 million extra starting from today, with a more likely half a million by this campaign's end. Which is like if they had "pledged" the original budget's 5 million from the beginning, even if the actual total would be a bit less than 9.5 million in total after Kickstarter got their cut.

As for the second part, I am also curious. Sorry I didn't have an answer or anything, just thought it'd be good to bring the the bottom of the last page to the top of this one.

Would you [or anyone else] happen to know if it would be possible to say, go from the $100 tier [via standard Kickstarter procedures] and then, after the Kickstarter ends, up-pledge to a higher tier [such as the $300 one]?

Regardless, I'd love to go for the $300 tier [and would, if I had a month or so to plan/budget for it], but with the CDN dollar as it is right now, if they don't allow up-pledging after the Kickstarter ends, I guess I'll be locked in with the $100 tier.

I was also wondering this as well. I just barely have enough for the $150 tier, and that's with borrowing money from my brother. I'd only just barely have $100 otherwise, and a clarification on this subject would be very appreciated from me.

Also, it looks like we'll see (hear) Miriam's voice actress after the campaign has ended. Oh well, at the very least, it would likely mean that she'll actually be auditioned for rather than simply being presented as fan service. I mean that in the non-sexual way, I thought I should clarify, like David Hayter and Robert Belgrade. I just want to hear what our MC sounds like, but we are all left in the cold for now...

Edit 2:
Who else hopes there are bow and arrow type weapons? All the ranged disposable items in SotN were so tempting, but were never worth using up, as even farming for spears would still only give you enough for just a few enemies even after lots of time. It would be pretty cool to have something ranged, in addition to whatever they probably have as the "sub-weapon" fill-in, so a bow and arrow or something similar would be great. Magical rock and sling? An actual slingshot? A crossbow would fit well I think? Oh, and like I said earlier, a joke gun, followed by a very secretive powerful one would be a great joke I think.

Would you [or anyone else] happen to know if it would be possible to say, go from the $100 tier [via standard Kickstarter procedures] and then, after the Kickstarter ends, up-pledge to a higher tier [such as the $300 one]? Since you're charged immediately after the Kickstarter ends, I'm guessing not, but they could always re-charge you the price difference between the two if you did decide to increase your pledge after the fact. So, for instance, if someone decided to go from $100 to $300, they could just charge you $200 [$300 - $100], and whatever the difference in shipping [if it's not the same].

I'm not sure if they have things set up in this manner, though. I'm guessing that the PayPal pledges after the Kickstarter ends will be for new backers and not those interested in up-pledging from their initial pledges. Regardless, I'd love to go for the $300 tier [and would, if I had a month or so to plan/budget for it], but with the CDN dollar as it is right now, if they don't allow up-pledging after the Kickstarter ends, I guess I'll be locked in with the $100 tier.
Other Kickstarters have made that possible in addition to adding to the stretchgoals for about a month after the campaign ended. They haven't said anything about this yet.

You might want to drop them a message on KS and they should be able to answer you or at least tell you whether they are considering this!

Thanks, I think I'll do just that.

Here's hoping they'll at least consider it, as it would also add to the amount of money they can obtain.

Nice, so the 50 achievement stretch goal is something we just straight up get for free without hitting a certain amount of money raised. New Game Plus hype. Still curious what 5 million is.

So it seems like we will be able to upgrade or pledges later after Kickstarter ends. Apparently their FAQ was updated to include it.

"Can I upgrade my pledge later?

Yes, you will have a chance to upgrade your pledge in our survey after the kickstarter ends, as well as add-on additional tiers!"

So great news!

That's awesome!
I already upgraded my first $125 pledge to a $175 pledge, but I am totally willing to upgrade it further to a $250, thanks to the Amano poster. I just don't have the money for another 10 days for it.

*whew!*

WELP, I almost waited until the last minute, but I finally (got around) to be a backer! :o

I went for the $100 tier, though I had considered the $125 tier...but nah. I'll just buy a digital copy for another platform when I'm ready to, no need to do that so soon. :p

Nice nice

We made $50,000 more (plus PayPal backers) money on the 4th to last day of the campaign than we did on the 4th day. If this inverse climb continues, we're going to see some serious 88mph

Would be awesome if the katana would be an Iai-drawstance weapon. Why else draw the scabbard? Would be really unique as well as far as Igavania goes.

not sure if i should get the physical vita or wii u version. unless these both make it into retail in 2017 (unlikely), the vita version is probably the one that will be the rarest and therefore coolest and best version to have.

but seriously, outside of sotn, my experience with castlevania's only been on handhelds, so playing it on a handheld screen and potentially on the go makes the most sense.

edit: hm, but i also played the ds games for the most part and if the wii u can replicate the map on the screen and game on tv stuff like the ds games did, that might be nice too.

Might get another tier for the Vita version...

Go on...

take it.

But the physical Wii u ver looks prettier. >:|

I want the third playable character just to have more people to use in Harmony of Bloodstained multiplayer. I want them to add 8-bit DLC chapters too!

Sword beat Whip?

Ya'll is some boring people.

There are a zillion games with swords.

You might as well have written in "Gun," since that's the only thing more popular.

I think most people ignored the site after the Kickstarter began. I believe Whip won every round prior to that too. I honestly thought it had ended at that point.

Ain't even mad about Clan katana winning with that design

I think it looks terrible but it's one weapon.

Highly underappreciated hilarity right here.

Also, I don't get it, where is that 5m stretch goal? I know we are still a million away, but we are seriously getting low on time. I hope they know what they're doing.

We have more than 2 days left and as I've stated before i think it's counter productive to even state what it is if we're not even remotely close.I would say revealing it at the 48 hour mark would probably be the best course of action if it's still climbing at the rate I expect it to by that point.

it gets the reminder e-mails out and more games sites talking about it, particularly if the goal is something big.

When it hit 4M? Yeah. Specifically designed stages, with rare loot and online co-op. It's on! I love how IGA was super happy to find Harmony of Despair fans, during his Reddit AMA.

Goddamn, that's amazing! Harmony of Despair was one of the best multiplayer games of last gen.

Do you have a link for that? I'd like to see his reaction.

Oh... Never played his games. Still need those and Ecclesia on ds or VC. But still, I'm all for cool animations:)

You should grab them. Aria of Sorrow is hands down one of the best games in the entire series, and while Dawn of Sorrow's normal mode is not as great (still good tho!), the unlockable Julius mode is fantastic.

Personally, I found Order of Ecclesia a bit disappointing, but it's alright.

What a shame that the whip was beaten. Iga wasn't known for running around with a sword during his Castlevania days.

Most people know the series for SoTN and nothing else.

My point was that whip never had a chance and y'all should have resigned yourselves to that early on. :p

I'm pretty sure whip literally won every round before the kickstarter happened and everyone stopped talking about the site. A lot of different conclusions could be drawn form that but the whip never standing a chance doesn't make a lot of sense with that in consideration.

Finally backed this, at $125. My first kickstarter ever, hope it turns out great. SotN is one of my top 5 games ever, so I have high hopes.

I don't think it's really possible to find that. IGA went over some of the details. Off the top of my head it mainly had a staff of about 5 people for the 3 year dev time but near the end the staff grew to around 13 or so to finish it. If you go through the videos and such from the start of the Kickstarter it's there but you'd have to do a ton of guesswork to actually hit numbers.

I think it was specifically the Doublefine video where IGA did commentary on SoTN.

I'm still deciding if I should upgrade from $100 to $300. Decisions decisions...

Question:

Do we know if the paypal donations (or any other) count toward the kickstarter tiers? And, if so, how much additional has been brought in? I'm really hoping for the prequel mini-game for portable systems.

Further, is anyone making guesses as to where this will end up? I know that kickstarters always get a final bump, but I don't know what magnitude we're expecting here.

Yes, they do.

Best guesses are that it will actually cross the $5 mil mark.
Most of the money comes in at the last 3 days of a Kickstarter campaign.
I personally am 100% certain that they will cross that $5 mil border.

Does anyone know if that $10 000 tier live stream is happening soon after the Kickstarter ends? One of the streamers I follow suddenly jet setted to Japan, and this was the only thing I could think of lol

I've figured out what the 5mil item will be:

Yngwie Malmsteen and Micheal Romeo both guest star on the soundtrack to deliver some shredding renditions of Yamane's compositions.

You heard it here first.
A man can dream...

So on a serious note, that has something to do with NG+... and that's all what they're saying now?

Quite disappointing to me to be honest, but can't speak much about CV fans.

They really could have done a better job to explain the Pyrite coin it seems... Basically Pyrite appears to have been an extra "no pay" stretch goal for a New Game Plus. It has been explicitly stated by Ben Judd that it is not the 5 million goal. It couldn't hurt for them to tell us that in an update, but he's said it in the comments section.

New update.

And holy shit, Armature are actually porting the UE4 engine to Wii U/Vita rather than remaking the game in another engine. And they'll share with other devs, this is awesome.

Also, $5m goal reveal tonight. It's a mode of some sort.

The crew at Armature continues to prove that they're the right studio for the job. We'll let them do the talking:

“Hi Bloodstained backers - Armature here with another update. It turns out that a people have shown a ton of interest in our plan to port UE4 to the WiiU and PS Vita. Since they're not officially supported platforms, it's going to be a lot of work to get Bloodstained and UE4 on these platforms, but we are up to the challenge.

“Since the community got these platforms off the ground, we figure that it's best to let the community have them back when we're done. As a result, after the release of Bloodstained we will share, for free, the UE4 WiiU and Vita code with any developer authorized to develop on those platforms! Thank you all very much for this opportunity!”

This is HUGE. Holy shit.

That's fantastic. Hopefully that opens the way for other developers comfortable with UE4 but want Wii U releases.

Its an awesome gesture, and very cool of them to do, however by the time Bloodstained is released I'm not convinced those platforms will have much (if any) life left in them.

You think it'll gross around 900K in the next 57 hours? I don't really follow kickstarters that closely but is the last minute bump really that high? I'd love for you to be right, that would be amazing.

Well, don't they have to have the engine running competently well before finishing the game?

Well, I'm thinking it'd be more indie developers at that point. DSiware is STILL coming out. Plus, I'd wager chances are good the Wii U successor with have backwards compatibility.
