Mt. Rushmore is only 4 heads. And Smash already has them all.

Patch Sonic out. That was easy! :P

Congrats, and these in the picture, with the unfortunate exception of megaman recently, are the faces of gaming basically as an industry given their history. People saying that Ryu or snake belongs on a "mount rushmore" of videogame characters are out of their goddamn minds.

ARE YOU FOR REAL RIGHT NOW.

Ryu IS Mr. Fighting Game.

Pretty much, you got the Arcade icon (Pacman) the Nintendo and most recognizable vg character ever icon (Mario), The sega Icon (sonic, from the golden years were sega and nintendo were the big 2) and you have the 3rd party icon (Megaman), that sums up the game industry history pretty well.

We know there are other older icons of arcade besides pacman, but Pacman is the most recognizable icon of arcade gaming, and he would be the biggest gaming icon if mario hand't dethroned him.

Ryu IS Mr. Fighting Game.

Ryu is well known but no way he's more recognized than any of the other four, the closest he's is Megaman, and it's debatable.

Ask your mom (im being semi serious here), she prolly knows who pacman, mario and sonic are, but unless you were a hardcore obssesed street fighter nerd as a kid, chances are she doesn't know who ryu is.

Fighting Genre wouldn't be on the VG Mt. Rushmore though, it's pretty niche.
Wikipedia said:
By 1995, gross revenues of Street Fighter II and Street Fighter II′: Champion Edition arcade machines had exceeded $2.312 billion (9.25 billion quarters),[6] equivalent to over $4 billion in 2015.
If that isn't mainstream success I don't know what is.

Shooters are the same way now, but it's possible the genre will shrink with the exception of a handful of mainstay titles.

Pac-Man, Mario, Ryu, Doom Guy all deserve to be on Video Mt. Rushmore. Maybe with the exception of Pac-Man, the others are figureheads of genres that spawned dozens if not hundreds of imitators.

No way man

SSB4 has 8-player mode. there's room for 3 more gaming icons

Snake's really the only one on gaming's Mount Rushmore.

Vurtua Fighter the OG 3d fight game

And Kazuya is best mishima.
I guess it was either Kazuya or Heihachi.

I don't know if I'd choose Akira instead of a King of Fighters character. After the obvious Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and Tekken, it's kinda hard to pick the fourth icon.

Wasn't there a rumor or a report or something that said Capcom wanted Ryu in before Mega Man, but Nintendo really wanted Mega Man first?

Well I mean the genre in general. Street Fighter and MK are huge but the rest really aren't.

SF2 was one of the biggest hits in the 90's worldwide. So regarded in fact, that it still has people playing SSF2T to this day. It basically created the fighting game genre as we know it. And Ryu is the character that represents that. He most assuredly belongs. In fact, I'd say he is far more influential, and thus more deserving than Sonic and Megaman, considering they were basically others attempts at pushing the platforming genre forward while Mario had already laid the groundwork. Hell, the same could be said for Snake for the stealth genre. Although, MG1 wasn't quite as huge as the other games it's stacked up against here.

Why are you so angry about a video game character in a stupid crossover game?

Ryu is a pretty awesome pick, not gonna lie. Roy is... eh. I expected to be mad about it when the leaks happened, and maybe the distance kinda just weaned me onto the idea or I just didn't care as much as I thought I would, but I don't really mind him. I'm not enthusiastic, mind you. I think FE has shitloads of characters way more deserving of being in the game, but... eh.

It really helps that this ties in weirdly well with Awkward Zombie's Roy plot.

ARE YOU FOR REAL RIGHT NOW.

Ryu IS Mr. Fighting Game.
His point that there are at least 4 other video game characters more popular then Mr. Fighting Game. I could show my parents that picture of the big four and they would know who everyone is. They definitely wouldn't know who Ryu is by name and they would probably struggle naming the series he's from.

Ryu as a street fighter rep deserves to be there at least as much as megaman.
Not only did streetfighter basically define an entire genre, but as a fact Street fighter has more lifetime sales than megaman.

Seriously, look at the sales by game
http://www.capcom.co.jp/ir/english/business/million.html

Ordered by sales numbers, there are 7 street fighter games before mega man even shows up (2,7,10,25,27,30,33, before megaman 2 shows up at position 38), and is 11 of capcoms million+ sellers, while mega man is only 4 of them.

How anyone can say megaman is more influential is beyond me.

Oh, is that the metric we're using. Great, because I could show my parents and they would have no bloody clue who mega man is, but could name pac man, sonic and mario.

I think we need to get a survey going of all of gaf's parents to settle this once and for all.

The way I see it, after getting Roy and Ryu (!!!) we could easily fit two more characters on the roster. Wolf clearly needs to come back, and the last one could go to the Ballot winner. OR they could have Wolf and another non ballot character and then introduce the top 4 Ballot winners (I can dream).

Rofl at Ryu not being a gaming icon like Mario, Pac-Man or Mega Man.
Mario, Pac-Man, and Sonic are in a league of their own. Pac-Man and Mario are the most recognizable video game characters in the world, and Sonic's not far behind.

Mega Man is only really an icon among the hardcore audience these days. People overestimating how popular he is. My younger brothers have no fucking clue who Mega man is, but they certainly know Sonic, Mario, and Pac-Man.

Can't way for 8-Player Smash featuring Roy (Koopaling) and Roy (Fire Emblem) fighting each other.

The best Roy prevail!

Do you even understand what a Mt. Rushmore represents? It's the most popular people in a group. So yeah, generations upon generations knowing who the characters are is pretty important to them being on the Mt. Rushmore of whatever you're talking about.

Mega Man would most likely win over Ryu by the sheer fact that he was the main/title character of his game.

I don't think KOF has done anything anywhere near as important as starting 3d fighting games.

Fatal fury is one of the most important fighting games in videogame history tho, and SNK rep is a must if you're going for Fighting game mt. Rushmore, Tekken repping 3d fighting games is good enough and the perfect 3d game rep. Ryu personifies the inception of fighting games and scorpion the creation of digitized actors and hyper violent fighting games.

Fighting game mt. Rushmore would be Ryu, Scorpion, Heihachi (or Jin) and Terry Bogard.

See this is why Wolf hasn't been announced yet.

Nintendo and SNK will have a partnership resulting in Terry and Wolf being announced at the same time in Smash and are called the Legendary Wolves!

If your parents would seriously know who Mega Man is they're far from the norm.

Aw, that's unfortunate! I would've loved for this to not leak, would've been massive amounts of hype.

Holy shit regardless! Day one!

Mario, Pac-Man, and Sonic certainly belong on a "Mt. Rushmore of Video Games," but Mega Man doesn't. No way. It's not even a matter of recency. Certain Mario, Pac-Man, and Sonic titles have reached tens of millions of consumers, but the best-selling Mega Man game barely sold over 1.5 million copies. Mega Man is several rungs below those other series.

Also, would you mind explaining to me how Mega Man is more significant than Street Fighter? Don't get me wrong -- I like Mega Man and his inclusion in Smash Bros., but Street Fighter sells gangbusters and inspired an entire genre. It was a legitimate pop culture phenomenon in the early '90s. Mega Man is just a series of tough platformers and that's it.

I can't believe Sakurai didn't consider talking to your parents first.

I'm indifferent on which characters were added (I'm neither mad nor excited), but I have suspicions about whether Ryu and Roy were in fact the top voted characters. Roy seems like a cop-out from Nintendo to me.
