Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

Seems like this will only work for a limited selection of games like the 360's initial backwards compatability before it.

Hopefully the games aren't just bad emulation.

Sounds like they just need the publisher to give them the go-ahead and MS does the work. The latest XBO preview patch likely set up for this.

how is this native when the architecture is different. its not possible to do it natively, that must be a marketing term. people need to know how software works with hardware. an existing 360 disc to work on Xbox one NEEDS emulation to work no matter what

They said discs work in terms of allowing you to download the game when you put the disc in, so I guess it won't work directly.

Shots fired at Sony, and for good measure, PS Now is crap.

I'll be really curious to see how this all works technically. Good start though. I'll still take limited xbox 360->xbox compatibility over none at all.

Yeah, sounds like the discs basically work as a license check, if you don't already have a digital license.

Major Nelson says all third parties need to do is say "ok" and the game is up.

So is it like you get the digital version off the store if you own the disc. Like with the Vita vmu trade in program.

Are they launching a 360 classics store?

If it's anything like the OG Xbox BC on 360 then I will be keeping my 360.

Let's see how good this is before getting too excited.

Hmm, just bought a cheap ps4, might have to buy this to replace my 360 later on if it works well. This + some good Rare stuff might make me want to get one.

Funny this might be the first gen I own all 3 consoles during the consoles lifespan.

WOW.

Amazing move by Microsoft. I've been contemplating a 360 for a while now but that might just have gotten a Xbone purchase out of me.

Here's hoping this is region-free so I can play my Cave shmups. But from the looks of it, the game needs to be compatible first and needs to download some sort of patch. But Cave is dead now... *sigh*

Basic feature? How many generations of consoles had backwards comp? Like 2?
Yeah, for a while it was a basic feature when everything went CD based. Then last gen came around and they phased it out to save costs and now people get hyped about it.

If they can do shit like this now, there is no reason they couldn't have been doing it at launch. They chose to keep this shit absent and now people are supposed to get excited when they're giving us what they should have been giving us in the first place.

BOMB HAS BEEN DROPPED

i think he said retail discs work too

Yeah but they still have to be downloaded to the HDD

I'm so glad! My 360 died awhile ago and I miss playing games like 3rd Strike, MvC2 and Garou. 100 titles at first but I hope they can keep it updating often.

Now it's up to the companies to be okay with relinquishing that sweet, sweet remastered/classics line money in order to get all 360 titles accessible this way. Here's hoping...

I would love to believe that all titles will be supported, but that seems really unlikely.

Microsoft did something similar with OG Xbox on 360. I don't have a faith that they will do it properly this time either.

If it is real and I can take any 360 game (including ones that sold like 15 copies), this is great and I am very impressed and will be happy to be wrong.

Much more likely, this will cover many popular titles, but not actually cover everything.

I'm really lost as to why people want this? If you like old 360 games then you probably already have a 360 surely?

It hopefully gives me access to my xbla library, which I lost when I packed up my 360 after buying the xb1. Conveniently playing my old games again from time to time is great. I don't want to bust out a 360 just to play shadow complex or outrun.

These guys just killed everything. I can't believe they just announced it a couple of minutes into the conference.

This is a game changer. Just had 3 friends that still have 360's and never got a One and now they are. I am in the preview program, going to check if I have the update to test this out.

This was a MEGATON, if there ever was.

Ok, now I only need to solve my account problems (because Microsoft are idiots regarding old accounts and their database fuckups) and a One will be mine.
