Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

Nice feature. Bit misleading to call it "backwards compatability" since most use that term to refer to actual hardware back compatibility (as in OG PS3, Wii for example) which this isn't, by the sounds of it. They specifically said that you put the disc in, download and then play - so that implies it's streamed or something, no?

Still - nice feature :)
 
Is this streaming or not? It didn't look like streaming. I need to know before I use this so I don't use all of my data this month.
 
Waiting on details and hands on impressions before deciding how to feel. The games I care about may not make it to the list; or the entire experience could be Jank city.
 
Curious to see the quality of the emulation but this is great announcement. Hopefully Rez HD is supported.

Yup. The way they said it was that you put the 360 disc in the Xbox One drive, it reads the disk and it manually downloads the digital version that I assume is the version that makes it work. You just need to have the disk like you do retail Xbox One games.
 
Pretty cool! But they said it only launches with 100 titles.
 
When they say natively they mean that the Xbox One hardware is running the code versus a streaming solution like PSNow.

Anyway, here is my understanding:

1) BC/emulation will be on a per title basis with the library of compatible/working titles being added over time.

2) These titles will either be available for digital download (purchase) or when you put your retail disc in it will download this content for free (but will require the disc to play).

This isn't that much different that the OG Xbox emulation on 360.

That was the exact same way the Xbox 1 compatibility worked on 360.
 
Pretty amazing, if this actually works for all or the vast majority of games I'll be super hyped. Was planning to get an Xbone eventually anyway but this is pushing me to do it sooner.
 
Want more detail. BC on the 360 was incredibly "eh", so it doesn't sound too much like a monster game changer. Still exciting to hear about the direction and look forward to seeing what they'll push Sony to do (PS4 owner).

It's not. how the 360 did it, was pretty match patch the game so it could launch on the 360, and the 360 would run it through it's hardware.

Sony does the same thing with PS1 games on the PSP back in the day, where it was just a different launcher for the PSP and you could play PS1 games natively on it with little work.
 
Well, the only way Sony can top this, is if they announce ps1,2 and 3 bc on ps4, and lets face it, that ain't happening.

Oof. Hope Sony can do something comparable with the PS4, because I'd love to be able to play my PS3 games more conveniently. That said, this will be a great test of how much BC really matters to the wider audience.

I (don't) play my games on my ps3... honestly this is a megaton, but I never understood why people who love old games ditch their consoles only to lament about bc later.... I was hyped about the phat ps3, then promptly never played a ps2 game again.

nice to be able to ditch 360 now but why would anyone ditch theirs before?

Why is BC a big deal?

If you're new to XB1, you don't have 360 games. Sure, you could go buy some used ones, if you want. But if you already have 360 games, you probably still have your 360. It's a convenience thing, but it's not really adding to the experience.
 
Some of you need to be a lot more sceptical about this. Wait and see! I will be very surprised if I don't have the Xbox, 360 and One trifecta around to play all my games.

Native means no significant extra layers of software overhead are needed to translate/execute. If they recompile old 360 games to target XBOX One and are able to get them working without adding significant on-the-fly translation then those recompiled games can be said to run natively.
