Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

Yup. The way they said it was that you put the 360 disc in the Xbox One drive, it reads the disk and it manually downloads the digital version that I assume is the version that makes it work. You just need to have the disk like you do retail Xbox One games.

Yup, think that sounds right. So as far as the average consumer is concerned, they are putting a disc in and playing it - which to them is the same as hardware backwards compatibility. Nice move Microsoft. Nice move...

Now follow suit, Sony.

I would love them too follow suit as well. However, it would conflict economically with PS Now. Sure, PS Now allows you to stream older games to any device, but its in direct opposition to free backwards compatibility on the PS4. I mean, Sony turned down EA Access because it conflicted with PS+ which makes me less than optimistic about getting a feature that negates the need for PS Now for PS4 owners (the only people who have access to PS Now currently).

Just got to this on my delayed stream. FUCKING YES. I hope every dev gives them the ok to get them all up and running on the Xbone ASAP. Love they are doing both disk AND digital. MS starting strong this year!

I was always somewhat confident future consoles would have BC due to the growth of digital games (on every platform) as well as the switch to x86 technology, but now this move really brings it back to the forefront as a necessary feature.

Great stuff from Microsoft here.

Well, the only way Sony can top this, is if they announce ps1,2 and 3 bc on ps4, and lets face it, that ain't happening.

Well played Microsoft, well played.

I'd be happy with just PS1 and PS2. Then I can just get PS3 slim, I'm still rockin a phatty BC PS3.

This probably is a game changer for me. I'm probably going to get an xbone before I get a ps4. I would've like if the ps4 was ps1,2,3 bc compatible with disc based. With PSNow, I doubt that's happening.

The wording still implies each title has to be supported manually, otherwise all games would just work already.

So it's basically PS2 Classics on PS3 but not having to pay for games you already own. Cool...but no guarantee all my games will be supported.

This is amazing. If sony doesn't do the same, Microsoft won e3, hands down. Not even Shenmue 3 + TLG will be enough, to me.

Great job, Microsft! And that's comming from a Playstation fan :)

Wow, I never owned an Xbox, but the backwards compatibility gave me the goosebumps for some reason. Awesome addition to the Xbox Platform!

Interested in seeing how this is going to work.

Just about like OG Xbox games on 360.

Patches to make whitelisted games run inside a wrapper

Kind of. 360/PS3 upscaled previous-gen games, these sound like they will look exactly like they did on 360

including older games like they're doing with fallout for free might be enough to convince me to get multiplats on XBO

Nice but this doesnt have the same impact for me now.If they had this from day 1 i would have an x1 already.

Oof. Hope Sony can do something comparable with the PS4, because I'd love to be able to play my PS3 games more conveniently. That said, this will be a great test of how much BC really matters to the wider audience.
That last prt is very true. Pre launch BC was ok to get rid of and dismissed by many to not be a worthwhile feature. Now all of sudden it is important and a game changer. It's big news for sure but after the dust settles it will be interesting to see what impact it has.

Does this actually natively render the games at 1080p? Or does it just upscale the games from their initial resolution?

I hope this gets broken open and helps the PC emulation scene.

Why is BC a big deal?

If you're new to XB1, you don't have 360 games. Sure, you could go buy some used ones, if you want. But if you already have 360 games, you probably still have your 360. It's a convenience thing, but it's not really adding to the experience.

Yeah pretty much. My 360 is sitting right next to my One.

sony won't go bc, there's probably too many new sony owners that doesn't have the older games from the previous consoles to truly benefit from it

I hope the games come sooner rather than later, I have a crap ton of 360 games and if I can pack away my 360, that'd be great

What if the game doesn't have a digital version? He said if you put in a retail disc you have to download it? Or did he mean install?

The amount of engineering work that must have taken is ridiculous, super impressive. Although, I can't really think of any Xbox 360 game that I'm currently missing out on thanks to the Halo Collection. Maybe it'll take a few more years for me to miss more games.
