Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

Cool for the one or two games on Xbox 360 that were worth keeping to me (Red Dead and Alan Wake...and Alan Wake is on PC so I guess good for red dead)

Nice move from MS...a game changer its not IMO. Not all games will be available from the start ..you need to download the game even if you have the disc (GOLD required?) and publishers need to allow it. So there are some caveats regarding this announcement.

Curious how Sony will respond though

Fuck yes!
Good to see the whole buy into an ecosystem thing looks to shape up well.

There are 360 games I wanted to play but the whole new gen thing eased me off last gen. Some XBLA that I thought locked to the 360 I will get a chance to give a go!!!

AMAZING!!! And guys please stop with the salt. You damn well know that many parents and cheapwads are going to love the fact that they can upgrade and still keep themselves entertained with old titles.

I can see Sony doing PS1 and PS2 BC on the PS4 but there's almost no way, even with having all the documentation of the PS3 could the PS4 be able to run games on it. The XB360 is a lot more straightforward to emulate.

Gaf is not the best place to judge this stuff .
BC can help with sales but how big is the question .

BC does matter, and with a growing digital market is matters more than ever. I used to hear it often among parents looking to buy a game for their kids; Does it play his/her old games?

This is a game changer.

As a now content PS4 owner who was previously 360, if they'd had this from the start I may have forgiven my initial misgivings and stuck with MS

As is, I'm still content with my PS4 but pleased for Xbone owners, great news

Sony better find a way to make the PS4 ecosystem have a similar feature. Maybe they have to allow PS+ users PS Now access to games they already own or something like that.

I just don't know how they can sit and not respond to this. Literally the only reason I'm clinging for dear life to my often-broken BC 60GB PS3 is because of the backwards compatibility. If that feature existed in PS4, it would be worth almost any amount of $$$ to me.

I moved from "Wii60" last generation to "WiiS4" this generation. Hearing this initially had me rethinking my purchase. But the more I think about it... as I get older, I've found I'm playing my old games less and less. There are so many new good games coming out, and of course, less time to play them.

But not knocking MS at all; BC really should be standard in these systems today. Hopefully Sony takes notice (so I can play those PS3 games I missed out on).

Holy shit.

This may just sway me towards an Xbox One when I decide what console to get this gen, seriously.

LOL no... it is limited titles, and this is hardly any kind of megaton, 360 also had this.

Is this confirmed?

That the idea BUT the game must be approved by the developer to be recompiled and make it available to download... after that you can download and play the game.

Of course it is not take into account if just recompiling the game will make it work :P

That's uh...wow.

And cause of Cell, Sony can't possibly hope to do the same thing.

Only thing Sony could announce to counter that is PS1 and PS2 support.

I gotta say, i already have a 360 so no point of this for me, but MS is bringing the pain

I think it's a game changer in terms of forcing the standard of BC this gen and how Sony should respond to this. I fully expect and demand some kind of emulation if not just for ps1 games we bought already for ps3/PSP/vita.

Not streaming. They said that as long as the disc is in the drive, it lets you download the digital version of the game and play it (system doesn't actually read the disc just the digital signature to allow the digitally-downloaded version to be played, from what I gather, correct me if I'm wrong).

So is this full scale 360 emulation or are they recompiling the executables like they did on 360 for OG Xbox?

I have 400 xbox 360 retail disc and over 100 xbla titles, if they can make them all work plus with kinect 2.0 rather than kinect, i'll be very grateful :)

BC is a nice feature to have and if you're going to drop a few hundred dollars on a console who wouldn't want it?

That being said I'm not sure how much of an impact it will have on the average person who is picking up a XBOX ONE for the first time. That person may have never owned a 360 and I doubt will want to buy many 4-5 year old games to play on their new console.

Those who do own a 360 and pick up a XBOX ONE probably have had their fill of last gen as we are almost 2 years removed and are ready to move on. I think the more hardcore gamer which represent many who are posting in this thread will find it very useful because they still play older games.

I'm curious how this is going to work at a technical level. I mean, XB1 can't emulate Xbox 360 in the way that all emulators so far have functioned. But they said it doesn't require any work from publishers. Hmmmmm...

Now that I've been thinking about it for a few minutes, I have to say it doesn't move the needle at all for me in terms of wanting an X1. After all, if there were 360 games I cared about playing, I'd have bought a 360 at some point. All it does is make me a little jealous that PS4 doesn't have it, which ultimately has no implications for my purchase behavior because I already own one.

Nonetheless, the idea that you can get a (partial) 360 and One in the same package has to be enough to push at least some people over the edge. And of course it's great for people who already have an X1 who want to streamline their entertainment centers.

I'm feeling the way,
I honestly couldn't think of any games that I would want to buy other than the vanilla ninja gaiden 2 :)

I'll wait to see how gud the emulation will be, what if it's like laggy or sound mismatches.
Still great JOb microsoft , now maybe PS4 now will lower their prices or something :)

This thread is hilarious. Backward compatibility for a subset of Xbox 360 games (not a native HW solution to cover all games) on a 2 year old console is a "Game Changer"? Really? I mean really! So suddenly being able to play your old games that you've already been playing for 10 years is going to change the tide in the console war. LOL. I really can't believe what I'm hearing.

Sure, BC is nice and it makes upgrading for those who HAVEN'T yet a bit easier to swallow. But this isn't 2013 guys. If this was announced prior to XB1 launch, that would have been a game changer. But in 2015 with the sales deficit XB1 is in, you guys are saying the killer app to make people upgrade is not a cool new feature or new exclusive software, but BC with old Xbox 360 games?! Hilarious.

With all the HD remasters going around and the trickle of releases that X360 gets currently, BC is even less important. But since when has BC been a game changer? PS3 launched with the ability to play ANY playstation game from PS1 and PS2 day 1 and did that do anything to allow it to dent into X360 marketshare? It was so valuable in fact that Sony removed it within a year and nobody even blinked. Microsoft tried SW emulation before too with X360 and how many people bought a 360 to play Halo on Xbox? Oh how can I forget how the Virtual Console allowed the Wii to win the last generation console war and kept the WiiU in the hunt this generation. Yeah...game changer
