Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

BC has never historically been anything close to a "game changer" so I'm confused as to the people who think this will in any way affect the Xbox's market position.

That seems like a situation where the developer would say no to BC - despite gow nice harmonix is....

Though getting a bonus for popping in a 360 rockband disc would be nice

I could see RB3 being approved somewhere down the road for BC, but not in the first batch. Let people live in the new RB ecosystem for a year or so, add RB3 BC support down the road in case keyboard support and an RB3 export never happens for RB4.

I don't have time to play 1/4 of the game I'm buying so.... Still haven't touch witcher and batman is coming. I couldn't care less about retro ... It's a nice deal but no way a game changing deal

All of you guys saying BC is worthless are crazy.

Perfect BC like on Nintendo systems is great.

Bad BC like on 360 is worthless. Wait and see with this, once bitten twice shy.

If it's glitchy, delisted games aren't downloadable and there are big gaps in compatibility then this may as well not exist as a feature.

LMAO. I love this so much. MS faceplanting over the past two or so years has caused them to put in something that should've been there at launch.

Oh well, if they add X-box 180 backward comp to the 720 as well, I'll probably buy one. Especially since it seems we aren't going to get Phantom Dust.

I guess some people might just buy an XB1 just to switch out their 360, and have a way to play whatever exclusives down the line?

IMO the difference is that the difference between last gen and current gen isn't all that huge so the older games aren't that bad and there were a lot of really good games last gen.

I missed out on roughly 6 years worth of XBLA content, so to me it's awesome. I'll be able to play games like Shaow Complex without having to buy an old system.

You'd get the popular titles whose publishers are willing and able to sign off on, but I seriously doubt you'll have even 25% of existing 360 content available on the XB1 any time soon.

Well done MS. What an amazing technological achievement. :)

Wow was totally not expecting this. It''ll be nice to be able to put away my 360 finally. If MS can do this for 360 games, that Sony should at least support PS2 games on PS4.

Well, aren't you just a cute little junior.

Look, the first current generation console to allow people to play games from a past generation is important. No one's going to engage your opinion if you keep this kind of attitude, friend.
Don't belittle him for being a junior, he's right. It might be an awesome feature, but it isn't a game changer.

This thread is hilarious. Backward compatibility for a subset of Xbox 360 games (not a native HW solution to cover all games) on a 2 year old console is a "Game Changer"? Really? I mean really! So suddenly being able to play your old games that you've already been playing for 10 years is going to change the tide in the console war. LOL. I really can't believe what I'm hearing.

Sure, BC is nice and it makes upgrading for those who HAVEN'T yet a bit easier to swallow. But this isn't 2013 guys. If this was announced prior to XB1 launch, that would have been a game changer. But in 2015 with the sales deficit XB1 is in, you guys are saying the killer app to make people upgrade is not a cool new feature or new exclusive software, but BC with old Xbox 360 games?! Hilarious.

With all the HD remasters going around and the trickle of releases that X360 gets currently, BC is even less important. But since when has BC been a game changer? PS3 launched with the ability to play ANY playstation game from PS1 and PS2 day 1 and did that do anything to allow it to dent into X360 marketshare? It was so valuable in fact that Sony removed it within a year and nobody even blinked. Microsoft tried SW emulation before too with X360 and how many people bought a 360 to play Halo on Xbox? Oh how can I forget how the Virtual Console allowed the Wii to win the last generation console war and kept the WiiU in the hunt this generation. Yeah...game changer

Eeek. I can't believe you typed all that out just because people are excited to replay their old games on new hardware. It's not that big of a deal. Chill out.

I just think it's hilarious how much people want to tell others how this isn't a game changer. Guess what? It is for me.

So basically if you own the game digtally/disc based on 360, they're offering you to download the digtal game on Xbox One for free.

If yes, then no this is not like PSNow

And yes it's a megaton and as PS4 owner you need to buy those games again on PS4 to play them.

This is the most convincing reason for me to get an Xbox One honestly.

A nice feature to have but wouldnt call it a gamechanger. Will be nice to finally play Lost Odyssey though(Hopefully)

Add me on Xbox, you need a preview member to invite you.

GT is the same as my GAF name.

Added you on XBOX ONE. GT is TAH3145.

If you could invite me to preview, that would be amazing. My fiance is going out of town in two weeks and I'd love to be able to play some banjo nuts and bolts and viva pinata then.

Thanks in advance!

Any list of compatible games? Can i go buy dragons dogma and the mgs collection at the store right now and play since im a preview member?

This is backwards compatibility like the 360 had if people weren't aware. Not 100% and will cover specific games, otherwise all the "this game will be work with backwards compatibility" wouldn't matter.

how is it "important"? its a neat thing for people who believe that once something new comes out it negates the previous.

My 360 is still hooked up. its a cool choice to have it on the One. choices are nice, but its not mind blowing.

Also a lot of publishers went bust last gen, how is the approval process going to work for the games they published? Those are probably out.

nice. but i mean, it's something the system should have had at launch. and having to download the games kinda blows.
but it's still better than nothing.

Does anyone know if it's possible or will be possible to play some OG Xbox originals via this or a similar route? I'm thinking of Burnout 3 / Revenge.

I just wanna read a technical write up on how they even managed to make this possible at all. Game changer or not, it's a mighty impressive feat.

It might convince XBox 360 owners that are in doubt to switch to Xbox One instead of PS4. But yeah it's mostly a really nice gesture for existing owners of both consoles.

I don't understand some of the reactions. This is huge, this is a game changer, megaton.

I plan on using it too but you gotta be kidding if you think this is going to somehow change the landscape of this generation, which is pretty much set.

How is it a game changer? It's up to the pubs to allow it, lol. Too many variables involved in this to feel absolutely sound about how positive it truly should make a fan of the Xbox feel.

Will EA's extended sleepover with Xbox play a role in getting more BC titles from 360 to the One?

Capcom loves remakes and money.... you know the deal.

Smaller companies might like the idea of extra money for remakes or remasters.

If this grows the library substantially, then I'd bite the bullet and grab a Bone myself. I have tons of 360 games, despite not ever paid for Gold nor not owning a 360 system myself.
To me, it seems like higher profile titles might get a pass via Microsoft behind the scenes deals. Smaller companies could allow it for more exposure at the loss of potential new cash for a remaster.

I'm definitely on the fence now. I just await how it'll be handled. This is BIG, but not a game changer, imo.

I thought there were 100 compatible games?

"We're giving you backwards compatibility!"
(As long as you put in a retail disc and download a copy of the game from our limited selection of 360 games and not do anything with the disc it's self)

I'm sorry but that's not backwards compatibility, I mean hopefully this encourages Sony to do something similar but come on now.
It's also worth remembering that old games will look exactly like they did back then. Your 2008 692p/27fps wossname will not be magically uprezzed. This is mainly a feature to stop 360 owners from jumping to PS4 as their old consoles blow up due to old age. If you want 1080p/60fps with modern effects, that's what remasters are for.

Though MS has the advantage here, due to the two platforms having several similarities, like a common memory pool, an on-die fast RAM cache and an AMD-sourced unified shader GPU. Any wrapper work will be limited to shifting and paralellising the CPU compute load.

For Sony, PS3 direct emulation is impossible due to having an entirely different design. PS1 and 2 emulation could theoretically be brute-forced via virtual machine, but not for the CELL/RSX combo.

This is actually the first thing that has appealed to be about the xbone, I still have a few 360 games I'd like to play after I two consoles RROD. I vowed off ever buying Xbox brand again, but I would definately pick up an xbone at the end of it's lifecycle if I knew I could play 360 games too.

BC is great and all, but in my opinion, they kind of missed the boat for it to have a huge impact. I've only ever utilized it near a new system's release, when there's a dearth of quality titles available for it but still new and good titles releasing for its predecessor. That isn't the case here.

This is a big deal and game changer for many people on GAF who find the feature useful and those gamers should be happy. I'm not sure how much of a game changer this will be beyond that.

The PS3 allowed full BC with the PS1 and PS2 which made for a massive library. They had it at launch and it did not allow it to move more consoles than the 360 at the start. It was a feature Sony felt comfortable dumping and it did nothing to the PS3 sales.

Big news on GAF does not always equal big news to the general gaming public but that shouldn't stop anyone from being happy about this.

Hopefully MSFT does it right and has a large library of 360 games.

Yawn at this. It's a "pubs approve, so your favorite game MIGHT work!" solution and I have already been trained by MS and PS to move on this gen. Nothing really left I want to play or replay.

It's better than nothing though. I do hope Sony does something in these lines as well.
