SHENMUE 3 kickstarter (PC/PS4) - FINAL DAY - NEW KS RECORD GO GO GO!

I do hope we see a return of some of the Shenmue I systems. Shenmue II lost a lot of that in favor of sheer scale.

Exploring Ryo's house was one of my favorite gaming memories.

As of right now, Sony isn't involved in this game. And Microsoft just announced a brand-new IP from Rare that's coming to PC: Sea of Thieves.

But there must be a huge publisher behind the curtains. Sony is taking big chunks of the spotlight for shenmue 3 atm for free. Why would the true founder let them? I mean this will surely cost at least 50kk, that's not a small investment, so why let Sony take nearly all the glory? I am not saying you are wrong, I just do not understand why some big company would found this quietly.

And yeah I forgot about sea of thievs looks interesting enough.

Can't wait for:
  • Shenmue 1 & 2 full games to be included stretch goal.
  • Full retail version for PS4.
I never played those games, but if they put those on the stretch-goals, I'll back them my self!

Can a KS campaign change stretch goals during the campaign?

It's the biggest videogame press even in the world. Might as well get the free publicity for the game you're funding. If there is some anonymous Asian bankroller, they're not likely to be in direct competition with Sony.

OH MY GOD.

The dream has come true...

Yeah, I never really got into Shenmue, so everybody's freaking out, and I feel like the girl in OP's gif. FF7 looks cool though. Great E3 so far.

You're crazy if you don't think Sony is involved w/ this game. They have to be fronting a majority of the funding.

Before June 2015, I had never backed a Kickstarter project before and now I've backed two.

I've never even played the first two and whatnot, but I'm excited about the precedent that this KS sets. It's a sequel to a AAA series, long thought dead, that undoubtedly has a dozen or two legal knots regarding the licensing from Sega that had to be worked out. It's a huge damn deal that this game is getting made and I want all of the old makers of other dead IPs to be paying very close attention to this campaign.

First one won't happen. It says in the FAQ that Sega owns the rights to the first 2 games still and it's up to them if they want to re-release them or not. Hopefully Sega sees how successful the Kickstarter is though and jumps on the bandwagon by releasing them.

Did companies REALLY think there was not a demand for this? Did this really have to be kickstarted? It is things like this that make me think companies are woefully out of touch.

1) Adam Boyes: "This is very much their project, but we wanted to celebrate their announcement on our stage...."

2)
Will there be an Xbox/Wii U/Linux/Mac version for Shenmue 3?
Currently we are planning development only for PC (Windows) and PS4. Other platforms have not been decided yet.

But I agree that Sony is the most likely source of funding. Then again, maybe there isn't any more funding. Maybe Yu Suzuki is fucking crazy and thinks he can get by with $2 million.

Yu Susuki is crazy and this is very plausible

Presumably though Sega no longer has the license for Shenmue though right? So they essentially own the rights to two game that they can never put out. Or is it a joint custody thing.

They are not involved - they even state as much before announcing it saying "this is very much their project, but we wanted to show it off on our stage". They aren't even listed as a sponsor at the end of the trailer

Boyes made it clear it was not a Sony project. Suzuki has friends at Sony so it's not beyond possibility that a mutually beneficial arrangement came about. Sony gets the Kudos, Suzuki gets the exposure.

Sega still owns shenmue, they have just given yu permission to make shenmue 3, Sega could (and should) remaster 1+2 if they feel it's profitable, which after this kickstarter it's looking like it would be very profitable.

I'm not holding my breath for a physical release on PS4, but a $60 Shenmue trilogy tier would generate more kickstarter cash.

Yes, Shenmue fans are a very vocal minority within the whole community. This is more than likely a "hey do a kickstarter, get funds for X part of development and we will fund the rest" from someone (Sony? Sega?). It's basically a guarantee for the funding company. If they just went out and funded the whole thing, it could have been a costly mistake. This eliminates a lot of that possibility. Business.

Shenmue has the scope and feel to be a big hit, it just was never on the right platform.

Its a hong kong revenge flick, but its set in every day life, with time of day, and weather, and yo boy Ryo has to be home at 11pm to get his beauty rest, so get as much as you can get done in one day for optimal play! Things people eat up nowadays, but the game was way too ahead of its time.

That this license sat in the dustbin for 15 years because no one had any foresight is unreal.

Call me crazy, especially on the "fronting a majority of the funding" idea. Sony would not Kickstart a game that they are already planning on giving the majority of funding for.

I wake up and it's already funded, my faith in the gaming community is restored, life is good. Happy for Suzuki too, he's had a rough time in the past decade.

I do hope we see a return of some of the Shenmue I systems. Shenmue II lost a lot of that in favor of sheer scale.

Exploring Ryo's house was one of my favorite gaming memories.

Shenmue's systems were great, but the sequel ditching some of them made it more focused, and I'd argue a better game for it. Probably makes it more affordable for the devs too, but I'd welcome such returns none the less if possible.

Copies of Shenmue 1 & 2 on Dreamcast are going through the roof. £80 now for pre-owned Shenmue 1 and £70 for Shenmue 2.

I knew I should have pulled the trigger on Shenmue 2 last month but I was holding out for HD remasters.

Shit, I got 2 Dreamcast copies of both games, if Sega (or whoever) actually puts out digital versions, then I'd happy get rid of a set. Obviously wouldn't be worth as much then, but it'd be a weight of my mind in any case, terrified something will happen to them.

It's more so they want to see if demand still exists now, without this going through Kickstarter there's no real way of gauging interest.

That and SEGA lost money twice on this project and by the time they were in a position to make a sequel to the series, it'd have been almost 8 years from the release of the last one (Which failed hard on the Xbox.)

So I'd imagine for whoever is interested in funding the full project, this is very much a testing of the waters (And looks to have been a massive success so far.)

I did my part and backed the game. Last game I kickstarted was Mighty No. 9, it's been a while.

So happy this is happening. I hope we see a remaster of 1&2 though.

I'm sure it's been posted but if I pledge when do they take the monies out? Immediately or later? Never backed a game before.

You will. Sega will just be waiting to see the viability of Shenmue via kickstarter and now will green light them since the audience and money is obviously there

I agree. My two favourite parts of the series were the Yellow Head Building and the whole of the trek through Guilin, neither of which had much exploration. I remember Yu Suzuki saying a few years ago that there would have been a heavy focus on the relationship between Ryo and Shenhua and many ways to develop it.

I still can't believe we're getting a reasonably well funded (if they have outside investment too) Yu Suzuki game... However the game turns out I can't wait to see how his vision of an open world game has changed in the last 14 years.
