Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

Sorry if this has been asked before, but do discs work yet? Tried Kameo and PDZ and they both spat out error messages :( this Xbox 360 game isn't compatible etc

It's supposed to work with discs. I don't own any of the supported games on disc though, so I haven't tried myself.

So once they start getting a good library of games that are capable of backwards compatibility do you think then they will start throwing out big games on Xbox games with gold?

I'd be absolutely made up if they give away Red Dead Redemption for example

Well for Xbox 360 we see AAA-games all the time.

So I assume they will just continue these.

PAL discs do not work at the moment.

I assume you are not living in NA. Only discs from this region are supported atm.

At official launch of course discs from each region will work.

That's strange, my PAL copy of Viva Pinata did work. And of all my library of digital games, only World of Keflings appeared in the download list, while I also own Mass Effect, HexicHD, and Banjo N&B that should appear there (I think I may own a digital copy of PDZ too, but I'm not even sure)

Just playing Mass Effect. It's great, just makes me realise I don't need remasters. I just want to continue to have access to the games I own.

Also I'm using a UK disc which works fine.

For what it's worth, I switched my console settings from FR to US, and had Mass Effect appear in my list. Downloading right now, will check if it works in both settings. Still no Banjo N&B nor HexicHD though.

I played Kameo with my game disc and it worked fine. Once you put it in you have to install and then it plays just like any other disc xbox one game.

I hope the consoles can catch up with PC in this regard

PCs have their own issues as well though. I couldn't get Fallout to work when I bought it and a lot of games don't have decent controller support.

I do love being able to play Champ Manager 92 and Civ IV though I gotta admit.

Edit

For Hexic did you go to the store and rebuy it? It's free but it wasn't saying purchased for me.

They could presumably offer the same games the 360 gets, instead of that fucking pool game.

Good lord, I f*cking HATE Kameo. I did NOT remember it being like this. It feels soooo bad to play. I remember kind of liking it but, nope, it does not play well at all. Just awful mechanics.

I'm trying to add a game to vote on on the feedback website but for the life of me cannot see any option for 'new'. Am I being dumb??

*edit* Yes. Yes I am.

For those in the preview, how does the BC of the XBLA games work?

They just appear in your "Ready to Download" list ?

yep, BattleBlock Theater and the two Army of Men games appeared in my "Ready to Download" list.

not sure about Hexic HD because I got it for free on the XBOX website a few hours ago, will check back when I get home

Only NA discs currently work

Yup, my thoughts exactly

It's a shitty game. The controls and the camera are terrible. The music is amazing though.

MS need to get every 360 game in the store. A separate area of the store is fine. Don't stop there though, let's get OG Xbox games in there as well.

It's interesting seeing the size difference once the 360 backend stuff is taken into account. N+ is about 20mb on 360, but with all the framing, it weighs up at around 600mb on Xbone.

well, it's running a 360 via virtual machine, so it needs the 360 OS files included in the package..

There's been quite a few already, even if a lot of them have been a number of years old by the time they showed up. Some of the bigger names have been Assassin's Creed 2, Halo 3, Gears of War, Sleeping Dogs, Dead Island, Hitman Absolution, Saint's Row the Third, Dark Souls, Dishonored, Halo Reach, The Witcher 2, Tomb Raider, Bioshock Infinite, Gears of War Judgement, Assassin's Creed 4, Just Cause 2, and currently Thief.

:L

They feel 60fps :'(

Nah, they feel smooth. If you try them patched on an N64 emulator at 60fps, it's noticeably different.

Don't worry though, prior to the whole Yooka-Laylee thing causing me to go back to them, I had misremembered them as being 60fps too (partially because of Perfect Dark I guess).

Shouldn't they be shipping those with the BC update though? Seems very wasteful to basically ship a 360 with every game?

well, that's the way the games are working now, and they work pretty good, so there's no need to change that now. plus, this is just a preview, maybe this will change in future versions, but as of now this is the way the games are emulated.

Some do work.

But it´s also in the official FAQ that only North American discs work officially.

Maybe they are fixing every game slowly.

I guess it's just to do with how the Xbox One handles applications. To make it seemless each game contains everything it needs to load in fully. If the emulator was distributed once instead, then you'd probably have to load an emulator app first and then choose the game from inside it. This would also mean that your online status would probably show you as "Playing Xbox 360" rather than "Playing Mass Effect" or whatever... which would also be a problem for game clips, broadcasting and other stuff.

I suppose for full retail games the overhead is proportionally smaller and with 1TB Xbone being a thing it's a non-issue.
