For people interested in the Famitsu Story/Images, you can download the free Bookwalker App (iOS/not sure about Android) and paste this into the searchbar in the store: 週刊ファミ通 2015年7月2日号

It's the digital Version of this week's Famitsu (2,99€), the second item from top, with the woman from the new Tales game on a brown cover.

It looks like the team pictures from the Kickstarter were taken during interviews if the new Tak Hirai video is anything to go by.

So I guess we can expect interviews from the following too at some point:

Also, it looks like their removing FREE battle. I suggest backers tell them they actually WANT to fight. It doesn't need to be less complicated.

What does that mean?. That fighting system will be differente from Shenmue 1&2?. Don´t tell me they are going for a Batman style fighting sytem. The best in the original games was to have a Virtua Figher-lite system inside an open world and learn new moves as story progressed.

I'm excited to know more about the battle system. I liked the battle system before, I don't think it needs to improve by a lot, but if they can change it for the better, why not?

They want to combine free battle, QTE, and learning skills into a new system. From what it sounds like, the idea is to do a QTE tree of sorts, where different QTEs present themselves and depending on your choices and timing, the flow of the battle changes. No idea if that's exactly now they are going to implement it or how well it will actually work but that's what it sounds like to me.

The camera was at times abysmal. And you never really knew if an encounter would be a free battle or a QTE. Combining them, like he suggests in the video, sounds like a decent idea.

But, yeah, hopefully that doesn't just become Batman combat.

The entire point of kickstarter is to give us influence over the game and most would rather have a complex battle system.

You seem to have misunderstood what kickstarter is. You don't buy in to the dev team. You become a patron of creators and trust them to deliver.

the $5 tier literally says there will be surveys that will influence the development of the game

a new style of QTE sounds good, but they shouldn't throw away FREE battle. in 2015 they could make that incredible, seeing how it still holds up today

There are a lot of kickstarters (including this one) that state that the backers will have influence over the creation. This project is for the fans as much as the original creator.

I'm not really worried about what will become of the battle system. I have much fonder memories of buying capsule toys and soda cans, playing arcade games, finding a MkIII in Ryo's closet, QTE's, forklifting, moving crates with some guy who yells at me all the time, etc... than of the fights themselves in Shenmue. I sure liked them and I hope they turn good and fun for everyone, but they're not as important to me as other aspects of the game.

Let them make the game they want to make. The main Shenmue guys are at the helm, have faith.

I think fans should at least give feedback on what did and didn't work in the first 2 games, granted being too influenced by what fans say can have a negative impact, the balance needs to be there.

Updated my kicktraq comparison w/ Bloodstained and Ouya as best I could with only smartphone available. Still only based on the daily Kicktraq-data, not adjusted for 24h intervals.

Shoutout for everyone contributing with other diagrams and pictures in the thread and elsewhere. Nice to see! Soon I guess someone skilled with design will be able to do the official Shenmue III OT. Looking forward to see that, will probably be better than the KS mainpage.

Outpacing Bloodstained in every single number. Good.

I feel the same way. Also, I suck at Fighting Games so a Virtua Fighter system is always painful for me^^ I would go for a Devil May Cry/Bayonetta fight system. Third person character action (of course not that much over the top) instead of classic beat em up style (because of camera problems). That way it involves skill (and fits the technique scrolls system) and has less camera problems.

Based on what they said in the interviews and KS info, they intend to allow fans to give some input into the game but it doesn't sound like the design will be fan driven, so think, "We have these two new designs we've been thinking about Ryo getting a bandana what do you think" together with a poll rather than "Help us design the battle system!"

So the game should be fine.

Oh man, Ryo should totally have a bandana.

I just don't want to force them into making exactly the same game again. I don't want to sap their creativity.
don't get me wrong, i don't shenmue 2:2, i want a full evolution of the series for the modern era.

but seriously, FREE battle is still so good. getting rid of it totally for something else is throwing out the baby with the bathwater.

i can't imagine when we finally get to fight lan di (in this, or a shenmue 4), that it won't be in a FREE battle. it's just part of shenmue's identity.

I agree that it shouldn't go away. I just think you're drawing the wrong conclusions from the video.

Yeah, the open world Virtua Fighter battle system of the first two games was awesome, I'm a tad concerned as to why they would not do the same thing for Shenmue III?

I think it's going to be interesting to watch how this game unfolds.

I personally don't think Yu should listen to any of the fans opinions on what should be in the game, but if he did.....

- fix the Notebook.
The blank spaces if you 'miss' something were annoying.
How would Ryo even know or decide to leave complete blank pages when writing anyway?
I've done a 100% run of Shenmue 1 and 1/3 of the notebook is filled with clues given by the fortune teller, but these clues are triggered in completely nonsensical ways.

One example is when looking for Warehouse 8, Kurita tells you to use the payphone which is within your viewing distance.
At this stage if you don't go home, speak to Fuk-san, then go to the fortune teller, then speak to Kurita again before using the phone you'll have a blank Notebook page.
What!?
Also if you pick the key up from Iwao's room before getting the sword guard on Disc 2, you permanently miss a page and a half of entries. Terrible.

I think for me the thing about FREE battle was that it really reinforced the part of Ryo's journey about him being a young martial artist who meets new masters who teach him new techniques. There was just something very tangible about learning a new move and then getting to use it in an actual battle.

And when you learnt new moves from an actual person they'd teach it to you in a way that translated into the actual controls. So if they said 'shift your weigth on to your back foot then step forward and punch', that would translate into back, forward + punch.

All of that is memorable to me to, but I have to say that some of the fights were some of my favorite parts of Shenmue. That 100 man brawl at the ship docks at the end of Shenmue 1 was freakin adrenaline pumping! I want to play through the entire game again just to get to that part!

Agreed. I really liked him as a character. Other than him, I neeeed Ren and Xiuying to show up again.

I can see it now. Niao Sun and a bunch of her men are about to beat the shit out of Ryo and then suddenly Ren and Gui Zhang show up to help. Maybe we can have an epic Xiuying vs Niao Sun showdown but I think there's less chance of her perusing Ryo, hahaha.
