Agreed! And on the positive end of the numbers game, the current funding total just jumped by five thousand dollars in the last few minutes.
whoah! hope that holds. it's been a decent day for funding today actually, at least from eyeballing it. it hasn't been as excruciating to watch it limp up to the next 100k

Being on the front page of Reddit certainly doesn't hurt! It has been there for the last few hours, so I'm sure that AMA has been a lot of people's morning reading. Great exposure for Shenmue.

Sony really should back this up.

I mean, they've wasted money on other IPs, but this time they actually promised something at e3.

No matter what, having this thing on the e3 conference is like promising.

They should at least help him with the PR... because for now, it's the fans who're trying their best to do it.

My message isn't exactly positive though lol. All I'm saying is that when you're hugely involved in something it's hard to get perspective. I mean, in that thread, people are freaking out and think that Polygon of all sites is going to somehow kill the Kickstarter and ruin it for the fans. It's just bonkers.

And looking at Bloodstained's tracking, I think $7 million for this is entirely possible now.

I also find it incredible that "big fans of Shenmue" don't want to have to do with this "just in case Sony are in this" or because "the kickstarter is not transparent enough". This is a one million chance, who cares where the money is coming from as long as it gets made?

Having said that, I really feel sorry for YS having to literally beg for money to get Shenmue 3 made. I guess the business world and the love for videogame art do not intertwine.

What we need is the ability to import my DC shenmue 2 save, I loved that you were able to continue from your Shenmue game in 2.

I might as well wish for a Dreamcast 2 though

actually that makes me wonder about the default items in the inventory

i want to see what the mysterious scroll from shenmue 1 does

Have always loved her grounded design, particularly that distinctive white sweater. I also think she has some of the best English language voice acting in the original games. You actually believe she cares about Ryo.

Nozomi was the best.

And don't forget this super creepy bit of vintage Sega marketing...

It's positive, you're reasonable and not like many who're on the fence because of the collab not being publicly announced and clarified by Obama.

Lol! That ad is awesome and its true to the game expereience too. Someone had their thinking cap on.

while we're sharing videos, how about shenmue on saturn!

it's crazy how far along this looks. even crazier when you know shenmue and shenmue II were meant to be the same game. that'd be nuts. the scope of both those games are huge as it is.

Yu is just such a damn genius. Shenmue clearly looked AMAZING on Saturn and did awesome things on the hardware. It is fascinating to see that his artistic vision was so strong and specific that it came through so beautifully even on the Saturn.

Yeah I was floored the first time I saw this. It's pretty unbelievable how good the faces look on Saturn too, when you compare it to something like Metal Gear Solid on Playstation. I always wonder what kind of crazy shit the Saturn could have done had developers gotten a better handle of its stupid architecture.

it also goes to show just how much of his career he was actually working on shenmue. for nearly a decade he was working on it in one way or another.

truly is his magnum opus.

here's something i noticed:

with shenmue/shenmue II recaps and language translations being the first stretch goals instead of development improvements, it shows one of the primary aims of the kickstarter was to make it as accessible to as many people as possible

that's pretty cool, actually.

He's mentioned before about the European fanbase being especially vocal about the series (might this be why Shenmue 2 DC got released here?) which makes me wonder if the game is still revered in Japan after all this time and whether he has similar experiences there...?

+ Remember this will be built using pre-existing tools. There will be no engine building. This will have a huge impact on cost reduction and development time.

Despite being "open world" I don't remember each chapter's area in Shenmue being exactly huge. Today we get huge open world games (GTA, Watch Dogs, Witcher 3 etc.). Would it be fair to expect a much bigger open world space in the 3rd Shenmue when compared with the prequels?

i think it was fairly popular in japan, but i've not got much idea about how the reaction to the kickstarter has gone down.

Metro Last Light's budget was "10% of similar games."

The devs also worked in Kiev in a building with no heat and power outages.

I guess in Ukraine wages aren't much higher than Poland either. The game will be made in Japan, and I believe wages there are quite high. As a result of this, Shenmue 3 would cost much more than it would should it be made in an ex-Eastern Bloc country. And I don't believe YS is going to move his studio there any soon :)

Haha I love that Tomato Mart sticks with him the most. I love that piece of music too. This will be my first backed kickstarter, how easy is it to change a pledge?

The orchestral main theme is the music from Shenmue that sticks with me with the force a a thousand super saiyan Gokus:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSOkM4e85SA

I still listen to it regularly to this day. Every time I hear the beginning of it I think fondly of the ship leaving the docks at the end of Shenmue 1....

I do wonder what kind of game they can make with such a low budget.

The first 2 had the biggest budget of the time
well, we're already past the baseline amount needed for a story-based experience

but yu suzuki has already said shenmue 3 is going to be a more intimate experience compared to say, shenmue II. it'll be smaller in scope, because of being set in rural china.

I don't think so. He specifically said he wanted the world it self to be smaller with more interaction and focus on character interactions. If you mean areas you can explore before hitting a loading screen or something, yeah probably.

Interesting. But I would assume Yakuza today would cost much more to make? Better graphics = more $$$

Yakuza 3 needed to ship 500,000 units to break even. So that upped the budget by what, another $10 million?

Although Yakuza employs famous Japanese actors/actress and only the first one of a new gen is expensive.

It would be impossible to fill it with the kind of detail I associate with Shenmue, especially on this budget, so I don't want a big world. A few small detailed place like Yokosuka would be enough.

$47 million to create Shenmue 1 and 2, create all the orchestral music for both games, create the graphics engine from scratch, for all the R&D including traveling, to write up the stories, to pay for all the localisation including english and Japanese voice acting, to do the marketing too, to pay licenses such as Coke Cola. Yup, that sounds right to me and now they can cut down 3/4 of the cost for Shenmue III as most of the stuff such as tools and assets are already available and Sony will cover the marketing. So it makes sense for this game to be funding around $10 - 15 million to get the Shenmue we really want.

Absolutely, I'd take a Shenmue 1 size map that's dense and detailed with interesting fleshed out characters over a bigger map thats sparse in comparison.

EDIT: $3,423,012 now, Hitting the $3.5m Skill Tree stretch goal today ?
